SUV with best MPG/Tax combo?

Could someone please tell me what SUV would offer the best miles-per-gallon/motor tax combination?

We currently drive a Honda CRV petrol. Fantastic finish and very solid on the road.

But, it eats petrol and it suffers from poor under-steer.

So, what would offer the best combination of the above - diesel or petrol, we don't mind.

Dacia Duster probably on that budget, will not be as well built as the CRV though but will be good on fuel and cheap tax.

The understeer isn't an issue if the tax is low enough?

Why an SUV, do want something to tow a trailer and go off road, or do you want something looking like an SUV. The latter is really a crossover like the Duster or similar.

SUV mainly for the higher vantage point. Wife loves it. It's her car. Have to say, I like it too.

Car is not for towing or off-road. Strictly town driving.

I hate Dacias.

Age is not an issue - only tax/mpg. Honda is 05 and mint - you could eat old the floor! Build quality is fabulous. Heated leather seats, etc.

Friend has a Kuga, now it's a diesel and mixed driving but it's a stunning bus, comfortable, well finished and seems very economical. I would consider one myself

You're gonna have understeer on a 2wd suv yoke though.
Cheaper tax started in July 08.

Weigh up what you'll save on fuel vs trading up.

I was having that very thought.

The money spent trading up would buy a lot of petrol/diesel and a lot of tax.

The other thing I meant to say was your crv is much less likely to throw a strop mechanically than a newer diesel

If your just driving around town the max saving over the petrol will be about a third.

You could stick to the Brand that you love and go for a Honda CRV 2.2 Diesel,for your budget you could get a 2010 with low mileage , depending on the Model Road Tax is €370 which is a reflection of it's frugal economy.
Honda have reliability built in plus it's 150 bhp Engine is whisper quite and a pleasure to drive.
Resale values are as good as you can get.
I wouldn't pass one ,especially as you have got great service from your previous CRV.

Good shout above. An other option would be a 2010 Hyundai IX35. If it's 15k with a trade in you could a newer one.

They aren't as big and probably slightly lower but are more than likely better to drive because of those two things.

As the tax is emissions based, the best mpg cars will always have the lowest tax and vise-versa.

It should work that way but in reality it doesn't always.
Example, the Ford Mondeo 2.0 PSA engine was the same through 2008-2013
The emissions steadily dropped during that time from 165-184g/km to 139g/km and less.
The actual fuel consumption reported by people not Ford has climbed.
Euro 5 and the DPF makes an engine very inefficient with regard to flow.
VW anyone?
