    Hi,

I'm hoping someone can help me figure out a problem I'm having with this X5...

It sounds like a pad rubbing on a disc or something similar but it's not.

It changes relative to movement as opposed to engine revs.

I was thinking wheel bearings but the wheel feels solid.

Only other symptom is wobble on breaking above 50.

Pads are good and discs should be fine although I haven't ruled them out yet.

Anyone got any other ideas ?

    Thanks.

Wheel bearing that make noise don't typically have any play at all. Wheel bearings with play don't make any noise....

Not sure what you mean by this. Does it just feel solid on the ground? You will need to jack it up and spin it by hand to see if you can hear or feel anything isn't right. You should also have a very close look at the tyre for damage to the sidewall. Also look at the other wheels - it is sometimes hard to tell where the noise or vibration is actually coming from.

    Cheers, never knew that..

I jacked it up and checked for any play. Everything felt and sounded ok but the noise only really appears at speed. Tyres are good and have been recently replaced as I had a bulge on one of them. Agreed on the wheels. Sounds like front driver side but I know it can be misleading.

This is one of a number of problems at the moment but I've been trying to get rid of a steering wobble for some time now. Link arms, bushings etc have all been done. Tyres replaced. The wobble has changed in nature but never gone away.

I'm happy to change the bearings but at the moment it's really only a guess. Suppose there's only one way to find out for sure.

    On a side note..

I need to get the auto transmission flushed. I've weighed up the pros and cons and i'm going to bite the bullet. Is there anywhere in Dublin / Wicklow that offer this service and come recommended ?

My own mechanic won't touch it..

When you say pads are good, have you looked at the inside pad on the wheel you think the noise is coming from? The caliper could be seized and is wearing down the inside one more. Could be metal on metal which would explain the noise and wobble on braking.

Does the noise get worse when you are turning corners?

Yeah I checked all the pads and can't see any issue. Had a look again this morning and I can hear it when I spin the wheel. It's like a low rumble coming from further in by the axle. I suppose that's not good 😧

Had hoped it was a DIY job but that looks unlikely.
