When the power was officially off for a number of hours last week, the Sky+ box would not power up again. There is a small brown ring,(burn?) Around the chip on the Sky card and the box will not power up.
Supervisor on phone at Sky said the same thing happened to him,but won't send out a new card until the visiting Engineer, tomorrow Wed, informs them its faulty. This may mean that after he connects a reconditioned? Box for £65, if the card is faulty, no TV over Xmas, until a new card is applied for.
Meanwhile the power company show no interest . Not that long ago Sky sent an invitation to insure the box, think around £99. Read an article last year on 'Buy, Die,Buy" Makes you think?

Have you tried replacing the fuse?

More than likely it is a box issue. The cards can have a brown mark on them and this is pretty common. If Sky replaced the card it would deactivate the card that you have now. You would have to wait for a new card to be sent out to you.

When the engineer comes tomorrow they will do have to replace the box. It will be just a matter of popping your card in and setting it up with the box.

Will he have to pay for the box? I presume so if the old box is not insured.

If he says he's going to cancel it they might replace for free.

Have you tried replacing the fuse?

Very dim flickering green light on fronnt of box,so not the fuse, suspect power supply surge on restoring of power.Mains voltage a bit high at 240, but I was told only guarantee + and 6% in cities, could be more or less due pending on local substation and if asked they could tweek it?

    Power surge protectors ftw

You make a good point, and I had supplied one power surge protection dis box to the lady at this location.
Unfortunately as the number of devices in the home increased, and the block was filled another dis box was needed. At the same time Sky box required a second Lnb feed,Sky + and the surge box only had a single sat lead in and out.
I have lost a Sky box in the. Past, due to a power surge from lightning, not from the mains supply, but the telephone line wrecking the modem.think not earthed? No power surge in/out telephone at this location, then but fitted since.
Interesting you introduce a term with 44 definitions on the internet,in the highly technical days, and it causes me to think it might be worth considering going back to the Cats Whisker at various locations in the North.
The Sky box in question was the only source of BBC radio 4 in the house.
    No FM signal.
    No Dab signal
No free view, except IOM, 200w,useless due to Trop etc, much discussed on terrestrial boards.
    No broadband,(Up to 1 Mbit)
No mobile. sig (2g Outside the property) I've read NASA have better broadband on the Moon All of the above, less than 40 mins drive from Belfast. .

At 240V it's well within the normal limits
What is the electricity voltage in Ireland?

For electricity supplied at Low Voltage by ESB Networks, the nominal standard is 230/400 Volts, 50Hz.. ESB Networks undertakes to deliver single phase electricity within a voltage range of 207 Volts to 253 Volts. This is in accordance with European Standard EN50160.

Properly designed equipment should be able to deal with that variation and probably a bit more.

At one time one could select the mains voltage,Amps etc ran on ,I always set them to the highest ,say 240, thinking I might extend their life a bit. Also think its best ,within reason to leave gear on rather than switching on and off a lot, less transients .BT guy once said they got 20 years out of valves by not switching them off.I have lost a Sky box power supply because it was switched on/off too often.
It was also possible to buy mains light bulbs at a higher rating, and car bulbs, interesting to see what Led does?

    ... .

What about an old LW radio? Listening to BBC Radio 4 on in atm. Just don't try LW near a computer as it picks up all the interference from about 3m all around. Most Roberts radios have LW and over the year would be a lot cheaper on the electric bill than a satellite box and TV.

Top man,,I have been checking into this new Laser broadband that goes through the clouds and means they didn't have to dig the roads up for that old fibre optic stuff.

Anyway, thanks for all your comments,Sky engineer replaced everything,Dish Lnbs, Sky box, newest type, All ,except NIE and Ofgen, may think the fault was a power surge on restoration of powder. I think the Lady did quite well out of it for £65 for the next 6 months.

An advice I heard on the radio that if you are having a power outage wether it is planned or as a result of a fault you should go to the distribution board normally located either in the hallway or the utility room of the house. You should turn of all the circuit breakers serving the sockets in your house. When power is restored wait for about ten to fifteen minutes to turn the socket circuits back on. This will protect your electronic devices from that initial surge as the power is being restored. If you are leaving the house for let's say for work and expecting a planned outage you should take the precautions above and turn on the circuits when you arrive home. Leave at least one light switched on.
