It is so different compared to it being in O'Connell Street. Wonder if anyone will take the old unit?

New brasserie down by the river where Pepper Alley used to be looked like it was ready to open today, begins with F..don't remember name. Italian I think!

Also, Korona on Castle st. finally opened this week i noticed. No sign of a menu on the window.

there was a time Sligo town was known for plethora of shoe shops ... soon (if not now already) it will be known for plethora of cafes & eating establishments - shame none of the big players are still not in town centre like Mcdonalds & Burger King though like they used to be years ago :(

(sorry mods if its a bit off topic)

I'd rather see independent cafes and 'eating establishments' do well than ****e mongering massive corporations like McDonald's and burger king though. You can get fast food of a similar calibre anywhere. It's nice that we have such variety in the town.

Both can and should exist in a "city" the size of Sligo. They cater for different clientelle. You can get a burger for a euro in McDonalds, and if you are a tourist visitor to Sligo you know what its going to be like. Go in to a fast food place you have never heard of before and you do not know what to expect. And do your kids want to go to an unknown place? And you pay 10 or 20 for the pleasure?

Even you were on holidays and say wanted to bring a group of kids to the cinema in Sligo, there is nowhere convenient in Sligo to bring them to for grub afterwards. Sligo was better 10 years ago, at least it had a McD and a Burgerking then.

It's a good point, it is strange (or maybe telling) that none of the big fast food crowd are actually IN the town now.

Maybe the former Boots shop could house one of the bigger chains. Don't eat the food myself but I am all for bringing people back into the town and if either brand would help so be it.

couldnt have said it better, in that respect we are going backwards not forwards - totally agree that with the well known chains you know what your getting and how much its going to cost and that the kids are gonna get their happy meals ok

Theres the unit a few doors up from boots where the discount shop used to be or is that not empty any more - or the old meteor store on O'Connell street - or the Abrakebabra place is empty now - just takes someone with some good amount of serious moola I suppose and take up a McDonalds or Burker King Franchise

There's a very good reason that none of the big fast food chains are no longer in the town centre. As mentioned they specialised in cheap food, with rent, rates, electricity, wages and other costs it takes a hell of a lot of people through the doors to make them profitable, not even considering the franchise costs that are paid out on top of that.

Most McDonald franchises are drive thru's, the average sale through a drive thru tends to be higher than an in-store restaurant which gives you a better chance of turning profit.

It's all well and good saying it'd be great for the town etc etc but a business like that in the centre of Sligo is relying on their profit to be made two to three days a week, the rest of the time they spend trying to minimise the loss against that profit.

There's plenty of nice cafes and restaurants to grab a bite in around town, encourage your children to eat healthy as a form of habit.

    .

True - I see where your coming from - Greedy landlords arent helping with what they are asking for rents, High rates arent helping .

For years McDonalds & Burger King existed not only in Sligo Town Centre but in one of the most 'expensive' locations I should imagine which was O'Connell street - why cant it be replicated thats what I am wondering, is it really because of high rent and rates? - if it is and its that what is killing these establishments then Sligo Chamber should be involved and try and do something about it. - There are not many town centres the size of Sligo town where you would not find a McDonalds or burger King or chains like that so why should Sligo town be any different these days?

You know what they tell you you're getting. The truth may not be as appetising.
Personally, I think the likes of McDonalds and all other junk food outlets bring down the tone of a towns main street.

i got a chicken mayo in a burger bun in Mcdonalds just as a snack (didndnt fancy a full meal) - €1.49 .. tell me where else in town centre could get for that price and im all ears. We aint all blessed with cash where eating a little snack could be getting on for a tenner in some/most of the eating establishments in the town centre so therefore choice is taken away.

so Town centres should closed down all their McDonalds and Burker kings just because a select few people like you think it brings down a towns image - thank god they remain there for people in the majority that like them and know that there are meal deals and they are not going to get ripped off by independent places!

I'm not loaded, but if I want a quick bite to eat in town I can grab a sandwich or a soup in a cafe for a fiver or so.

I do think that if people had wanted a burger king or a McDonald's in town so badly they would have voted with their feet. They must have closed because they simply weren't profitable - people must have chosen to eat elsewhere.

I dont know why BK went but with McD's it was because their lease was up on the building in O'Connell street and they already had the drive-in up at the retail park. Very nearly always busy the one in O'connell street so it could not have been anything at all to do with footfall im almost sure of it

I'm nearly sure you're wrong, it had changed from franchise to company more than once, the lease was for many years longer than they actually kept the building for if I remember correctly.

And I can tell you pretty solidly it had everything to do with footfall...
