that's great she enjoyed it so much, and 130 kids!! wow. fair play to the organisers, a great initiative indeed and another reason to love parkrun :)

Early start this morning for the trip to Rush and BG Jr’s first parkrun. Great set-up, beautiful, safe park and encouraging volunteers. Close to 130 kids running/walking/jogging the 2Km today.

Ooooh, very interesting. What age were the youngest kids there? I'd love to bring my 5 year old along, it's just up the road.

Chalk this one off to a bad day G. Maybe the club session this week took more out of you than you realised? No doubt you'll be back stronger to tackle this with a vengeance next time.

It's for 4-14 year olds. Lots there yesterday in the 4-5 age group. Just register your 5 y.o. on the Rush junior event page and print off the barcode. Info on their FB page too. Might see you there!

Thanks. Not sure, but I think I just had no business targeting that time in the first place :o. I'll definitely aim to chip away at that time over the next few months. Next attempt will be less public I think !

Hey BG looking at your cross country times, I think you will have no bother on right day, I think you'll smash it next time, rest up and ready to go again😀

Ah now, don't be ridiculous. Your 5-mile time and 10k times (with which I'm very familiar as you know) have you in the very low 21:xx range so of course you're right to have a shot at 20:xx. In fact you can pace me to it next time. ;)

Ha ha, XC courses are notorious for being short. In fact I have it on good authority that last week's was short by 300m !

Never met a race calculator I agreed with  Thanks, just I know now to go out at sub 21 pace is suicide, so will aim for something a little more realistic first! Do you think you'll do another 5K before Boston ?

Dunno - with Masters XC, Raheny 5 and Ballycotton already on the cards the schedule is getting pretty full already. Maybe in mid-March, now that I'm warming to the distance, even if I question my sanity every time I do one. It will definitely be a parkrun though, not one of those crazy Paddy's day events. :p

You're definitely in line for a sub 21, no doubt about it.

Sure don't ya know we all have bad days!

And what about the XC last weekend followed by the club session during the week? Could be something to do with it. The club session could have been a bit soon after the XC, the two combined could have been the reason for the park run not happening.

Sub 21 is imminent though - definitely.

Yup, not doing Ballycotton but doing the rest plus Meet&Train XC, plus BHAA XC...I've changed my 2016 plans/goals - again - to try to conquer this 5K business. I loved the Paddy's Festival 5K but not sure I could trust the distance to be accurate so will probably stick to parkruns myself. Which of these two is faster you reckon, Fr.Collins or Poppintree ?

They are both dead flat but I reckon Poppintree is a good bit faster with fewer turns and wider paths. Can be a bit exposed if it's windy, but I like it a lot.

Thanks for the vote of confidence! I felt good during the XC and the track session and not tired after either but certainly it's probably a factor so I'll taper properly for the next attempt. And avoid smackdowns :D.

Think 300m rep sessions really helped me endurance wise, and lots of
Beetroot juice. Also armed with your new info about weight loss just before
off😀 plus have done nothing strenuous since DCM.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,782 ✭✭✭✭Murph_D

Think you hit the nail on the head, there, G. The track sessions are very useful for getting the body accustomed to faster (ie sub 5k) pace. So that going off at actual 5k pace, while still difficult, doesn't feel like you're gonna die! (not until the 2nd lap at least).

It's all relative, but I'm always amazed at how fast those track sessions can be in small doses.

Jury's out on the beetroot though. Sceptic. :pac:

Don't diss the 'root! I'm a big fan and would eat it most days. Not sure if I'm eating enough to make a difference but a pink vegetable - what's not to love  ?

I love beetroot, just not convinced (yet) about its magical powers. Seems to work for Kennyg though!

Only catching up here now BG, sorry about Saturday. It's difficult to get your head and your body in the right space at the same time - your sub-21 will come along very soon and when you least expect it I bet :)

That's it, the magic formula: Beetroot Juice + compression socks = sub 21 :D

Thanks! You're right, the mind was willing but the body wasn't able for it . I'm working on the magic formula now (so far it's a mix of beetjuice, compression socks, PMA and pinch of HTFU :)) and will give it another bash in the new year.

Sneaky Saturday morning to Poppintree it looks like. Actually I got my parkrun results and have only participated 4 times so twice in Malahide and twice in St Anne's and volunteered as many.

Ok, so it doesn’t look like any more PBs are likely for 2015 so I was thinking I could use this year’s VDot results to set targets for 2016 in these and other distances. Having changed my mind, again, about the plan for 2016, I have now decided that the year will look like this:

Jan-Apr Focus on distances up to 5 miles
Raheny 5, XC, parkruns, 1 mile/3K Time Trials
    May-Jun Base Building (no races)
Get mileage up to 55 p/w
    Jul-Oct DCM Training (P&D 18 week) <55 miles p/w
Races Series 10 miles, The Lakes 10K, Half Marathon, DCM
    Nov-Dec Recovery, XC

    2015 PBs
    Distance Time vDot Date
    1 mile 06:14 46.4 Apr-15
    5 miles 34:56 46.6 May-15
    800m 02:51 47.4 Jun-15
    1200m 04:30 46.5 Jun-15
    2000m 07:59 46.0 Jun-15
    10Km 44:04 46.4 Sep-15
    13.1 miles 01:39:10 45.6 Sep-15

They’re reasonably close together with a slight bias towards the shorter distances. This makes me think the 5K should be one of the easier ‘short’ ones to achieve .

    2016 Targets
Distance Target Time Target vDot Date Race
    1 mile 05:59 48.6 Apr-16 Alsaa Winter League / Raheny Winter League
    3 Km 11:59 47.9 Mar-16 Alsaa Winter League
    5 Km 20:59 47.1 Apr-16 parkrun
    5 miles 34:45 46.8 Jan-16 Raheny 5

    10K 43:30 47.1 Sep-16 The Lakes
    10 miles 01:13:00 46.5 Aug-16 Frank Duffy 10
Half Marathon 01:37:00 46.7 Sep-16 Races Series Half
    Marathon 03:30:00 45.6 Oct-16 DCM

I’m not sure about the merits of racing 10K the month before DCM but the P&D programme allows for a few tune up races of 8-15k in the last 6 weeks and I would hate to miss out on my favourite race of the year: The Lakes 10K.

I'll aim to stick to the above, assuming it makes sense generally. I don't think any of those targets will come easy. I think I'd be most confident of the half marathon because this year's PB was not as hard fought as all the others.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,672 ✭✭✭hillsiderunner

    Serious targets there.

If you decide you want to slide in a little race at the end of base-building, there is always the Seven Hills which will be 26th June ...so hardly cheating at all really being right at the end of that phase

Sign-ups not opening till 1st March in 2016 which is much more sensible and gives lots of time to plan.

    No mullingar :(

The very best of luck with these, you have a good structure for the year there and will achieve what you want with your usual no nonsense hard work approach :)

I know, sorry :o. I just felt like I needed to HTFU and focus on the shorter stuff. Speaking of which, off to the club now where there's a 3K time trial on the schedule. I'll make up my mind on the way....
