Whiskey Conundrum

    Why do Irish people give Whiskey as a gift at christmas?Is it peculiar to Ireland?

    I'm looking at 7 bottles of the uisce beatha that I've got this week from various associates as a christmas box and I hate the sh1te.

    Chances are I'll get a few more before the week is out.

    WTF am I going to do with up to a dozen bottles of firewater?

    I'm a beer drinker.

    Did you get some Jameson? Throw it in with a mixer you like and it'll give it a bit of kick.

    I used to run a bar and nightclub and every single rep, every single fcuking one of them, used to give me a bottle of whiskey of Christmas. I says to one, I'm after buying ten pallets of spirits off you, do you not think I see enough of the stuff, can you not give me a nice fleece jacket or a golf umbrella? He just shrugged, the bastard.

    Usually amongst males....

    The boxes usually re-gifted in a large scale pass-the-parcel.

    I have to agree Sir, I hate the stuff and only drink beer. That's all I've drank since I started. Guess what all my friends gave me for a significant birthday? Yep whiskey. A €15 box of carlsberg would have been lovely! Just pass it on or do an oul switcheroo and pass it back.

    I think these Xmas bottles of whiskey have been circulating eternally like some alcoholic version of Groundhog Day. I just remove any little gift tag from the wrapping and pass them on: postmen, low level business contacts etc. I expect some of them have passed through my hands 3 or 4 times at this stage!:pac:

    I got 5 bottles of Jameson from my suppliers this year, last few years I usually got 4 bottles of white wine p!ss vinegar and 1 bottle of powers. The good times must be back! Having one of the Jameson bottles right now with some ginger ale, ice and lime whilst listening to some music! Merry Christmas everybody!

    I'm quite partial to the odd whisky, beer is my drink of choice, but there's something about nursing a tumbler of whiskey on a winters night with a good movie on the box.

    Jameson would my first preference.

    You have to sell your soul to the demons of either middle management or entrepreneurship. Free whiskey doesn't come cheap.

    It's kinda weird and selective actually - if I gifted someone vodka I'd worry I was implying they were an alcho or a party animal.

    But whiskey is a sophisticated drink - for someone who likes an evening tipple by the fireplace pontificating over the works of Joyce or Wilde. Or something.
