I'm talking about online applications and the like.

It's rarely specified what kind of data they collect. Just email and phone number and what you upload (cover letter, CV and so on)? Or more private stuff than that?

    Cheers for any help folks

They can't really collect any personal data you don't provide now, can they?

I applied for one recently that asked for the usual job-related stuff on the online form, but then wanted my addresses for the last few years and other details for a "background check"

Needless to say I didn't fill that stuff in seeing as I hadn't even spoken to anyone about the role yet.

Well, that isn't obvious. The pages you visit, browsing habits, shopping habits, etc are easily detected through cookies. I wanted to be sure.

There are limits to what use that they can make of the personal data. This ties into legal proportionality, the concept of there has to be a reasonable limit that should not impinge on personal privacy. So instance a typical data processor could not say take personal data form a job application and then use the same data to sell to advertisers etc.
