I'm not sure if Dildo has been confirmed as the correct name, but it doesn't look like Dildo Newfoundland.
Google doesn't know about any other Dildo places

I didn't think Dildo was an actual place. Just to confirm. ... it's not Dildo.

    I'll accept that.

It's the entrance to the Vardøhus Fortress in Vardø, Finnmark, Norway. It's history dates way back to the 1200's. Not entirely sure what the things on the gate are but I'm pretty sure they're not dildos.

The grass roofed house has definitely a Northern Norway or Faroes feel to it.
Added to that the Norwegians love some old American muscle cars/trucks.

    Anyway here goes....

    Nope.

I do know you love the place Fred, but it is not Bulgaria.

Hint: This place is like some of my previous efforts and has salient links to WWII.

Eastern Orthodox crosses maybe it's Russia or Ukraine? I would say maybe Kaliningrad former Koenigsberg, Prussia

Are you referring to the Kursk salient? That was a big tank battle in southern Russia in 1943. So I had a look at Kursk, Orel and one or two other places, could not find the location in the picture.

    Yep it is Russia.
Not Kaliningrad, but major German connection as below.

Good spot on the salient. :)
Operation Citadel was one of the biggest tank battles in history and probably the last hurrah of the Germans really.

And here is idea of the scale of the salient.
The Kursk salient was 250 kilometres (160 mi) long from north to south and 160 kilometres (99 mi) from east to west.
So I had a look at Kursk, Orel and one or two other places, could not find the location in the picture.

Try again, you are almost there ;)

I found it. It's this spot here but I can't figure out what anything is called. It's in Oryol.

    Yep that is it.
It is Oryol or sometimes I think called Orel as in what M.T had said.

Once you look at city, it is not that difficult to spot as there are pics in Google of it.
Maybe I was being a bit tough on M.T, but they do set high standards.

Well, maybe the change in sky from the posted picture to the other version is the reason, I tend to stop looking if the weather doesn't match because I've only encountered maybe two cases in this game where the picture dates are different from search version to my version. But I don't have time to look now so I will have to investigate that later. From the original picture I surmised the view was towards the southeast (shadows) but you can't tell that from the second picture.

The fences are a different colour in the picture I found too. Like they've been painted.

It is monument to General Manuel Baquedano in Plaza Baquedano.

    Just for M.T ...
The pic shown is probably in late evening and it shows that Johnnie Ginger add on the far building under the Canon sign and beside the Entel sign.
But when you move right up towards building the picture is from earlier in day and there is no sign of the Johnnie Ginger add on the building.
    Spooky...

It was supposed to be a statue of Bernardo O'Higgins because that's what I Google. I've lost all faith in Google Maps today!
