Postgrad taxback?

    Hey folks!

I left my job during the summer so I could start a masters full-time in Dublin, which started in September. I saved up a good sum to allow me to do this, but I'm wondering how I should go about getting taxback on my tuition and the PAYE tax I paid for the year.

I'm pretty sure I can get something back on the tuition (€6000), but I'm not 100% sure on the PAYE tax. My salary was €31,000 and I have been unemployed (Not sure if doing a postgrad counts?) for about 4 months now.

I guess I'd like to ask how I start this process? Do I provide receipt of the tuition payments and give my P45 in somewhere? Just so things are clear, I'm not earning anything at the moment and am living off of my savings. I'm not living with family or relatives either (Moved out in September).

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

There's a form you download from the Revenue site that will allow you claim the tuition fee. Google will find it for your easily. If you send that off I suspect Revenue will balance all your tax and repay you any income tax owed. If not you can get a balancing statement through PAYE Anytime if you're signed up.

You need receipts from the college but I think that's all.

IT31 is the form you need.

Thanks folks! Do either of ye know where exactly I should be sending the it31 to by the way? The website isn't very useful and I've been waiting on an email response for a while now. Probably because everyone else is doing the same thing as me!

Also, I signed up on the revenue site and submitted a paye request thingy for tax credits. Is that all I need to do? It let me request a calculated amount and wanted my iban/bic from my bank account.

If you have signed up to PAYE online, then you should be able to input the fees on their site, the same way you can enter medical expenses etc. Your balancing statement request(P21) would take into account any tax back due to ending your work in the middle of the year. You will have to enter the fees amount though, revenue won't know about it until you tell them.

Also, it's been a while since I used PAYE online, but didn't think you could request a P21 until the new year. Things may be different for you however as you are no longer working.

Your local tax office. This caught me out too.
