Revenue Defaulters List Process

Hi all,

Apologies if this question seems basic, Its an observational question, I know nothing about the area and cant find anything on Revenue.ie about how one ends up on the list.

I'm trying to figure the process about someone ends up on the Defaulters list. Seeing some of the fines for a cleaning lady and a teacher, it made me wonder the lengths the Revenue go to before this action.

1. Non payment of XYZ to Revenue
2. Revenue sends demand letters,
3. Revenue sends Sheriff?
4. Sheriff cant recover
5. Go to Court
6. Court issues fine?

Do they notify you that you will be appearing on the list and what happens if you do appear, is it like a credit rating and the bank use it to make decisions?

This should sort most of your queries, but in general if you are on either list it's because all other options were exhausted or your met the publishing criteria.

There's a long road to publication really, especially when it comes to Audit cases, the percentage of penalty applied etc

part of the list is for lying on, or not filling in a tax return when you should or smuggling

and the other part of the list is for when you (or your estate) have made a settlement with the Revenue after they have caught you dodging tax.

In cases where you are called for audit, and you owe tax but you come clean before the audit, and PAY what you owe, you won't be published. If you don't disclose, you are found to owe money in an audit, or you tell them in advance but can't pay what you owe up front, you'll be published

So besides public embarrassment, does appearing on the list have any other implications? Is it yesterday's news and the world moves on when the report comes out?

I'd say you're locked into a payment plan with revenue after that, and god knows what if you can't pay
