Ooh, bit of a mixed bag there. Forever Young. Again. I remember last time that was on quoting Skid from the previous time it was on. (Point still stands, it's the worse premise for a show ever).

Anyway, it's all good cos The Boss is here to save the day. Wahey! Love The Boss.

May not have gone back far enough to see it mentioned, but I've caught to the latest episode of Big hits and Breakthroughs on Sky Arts. Pretty cool program on the evolution of music through the ages in technology, from the first electric guitar to synths and drum machines in the most recent episode.

"I'm Not in Love" is, for me, one of the saddest songs of all time - I always struggle not to cry whenever I listen to it. :(:(:(:(:(:(

The folks at the D**ly M**l would more than likely disagree with me, because they believe - unsurprisingly - that it's a sexy love song (and to hell with the second word of the title).

    http://www.discogs.com/Various-20-Classic-Love-Songs/release/3035940

They may as well consider "Walk On By" a sexy love song, too (and they probably do).

Meanwhile, it was a pretty big coincidence that last night's TOTP repeat aired just five days before the 35th anniversary of JL's death. A tough first solo episode for Richard Skinner, too (having co-hosted the episodes of 11 September '80 and 6 November '80 with the Yorkshireman who must not be named).

Ha, I had a rummage and I have that very CD here. Never copped that some of the songs don't fit well with the title, well spotted GHG.

That was a baptism of fire for Richard Skinner. I think he well with the tribute to John Lennon at the end.

Coincidentally, he made the phone call to Paul McCartney that informed him of the tragic news
When John Lennon was shot, I happened to have Paul McCartney's home telephone number.
I phoned and he didn't know. I spoke to his butler or somebody like that and he passed on the news.

About three hours later, about eight o'clock in the morning, Paul McCartney phoned me in the Newsbeat office.
He said, 'Thank you for telling me - I can't talk about this.' So we never got an interview, but being the person to pass on that news was a bit of a weird one.

Ha, I don't like to encroach onto BBC Four Thread territory Harry!

Except for Brian Pern, he gets onto both threads because according to his Agent "He is Brian Pern. He gets onto all the BBC Four threads or I get that station closed down".

Baggy Trousers there just reminded me that as a kid my bedroom locker was plastered with stickers of Madness, I think they were free with weetabix some time in the 80s. I had that locker too right up until the early 90s, the stickers must have had industrial strength adhesive on them as you couldn't get them off.

    Agreed.
I like to think they were all at home watching that and thought, "You know what? It'd be a shame not to work together again.". I know there were all sorts of internal squabbles, but they all came across very graciously in the documentary. Which was excellent from the outset.

    Saturday

    9.45pm TOTP2: Christmas 2015 (BBC2) New!
Mark Radcliffe returns with another special Christmas edition of Top of the Pops 2, delivering a smorgasbord of festive delights straight from the BBC vaults.

Trawled from the depths of the BBC archive treasure chest, there are some Christmastide gems to get you in a festive mood this season, including rarely seen footage of Sir Tom Jones frolicking in the snow, a classic Top of the Pops Christmas performance from superstar Adele and Britpop legends Pulp wigging out in Christmas attire to their classic Common People.

And while you wrap your presents and write your cards, enjoy a unique performance from the much-missed late Cilla Black. Plus it wouldn't be TOTP2 Christmas without a smattering of some perennial favourites such as Wizzard, Slade, Wham, Jona Lewie, The Pogues and Kirsty MacColl and the inimitable Shakin' Stevens! So sit back and enjoy a festive feast of Christmas treats from Top of the Pops of Christmas Past...

Coverage of a special concert performed by Jeff Lynne's ELO at the BBC Radio Theatre in November. Originally broadcast live on Radio 2, the show featured some of the band's classic hits such as Mr Blue Sky, Telephone Line, Livin' Thing and Strange Magic, along with new tracks from their recent album Alone in the Universe, which is the outfit's first release in more than a decade

Midnight: Mr Blue Sky: The Story of Jeff Lynne and ELO

    repeat

    1.40am Rollermania: Britain's Biggest Boyband
    repeat

    2.40am TOTP2: Boybands
    repeat

I'm not sure what those BBC Music Awards achieve, it's a bit contrived and it must cost a bit. Money they could be using to make proper Music programmes. Ah well, The Menswe@r story will have to wait for another year :)

I'm so jealous of the posters on this thread for the past couple of months since I lost the UPC signal out here in culchie land. All the best stuff is on BBC's and Sky Arts. I have to make do with Saorview:( -and Pat Shortt doesn't really fill the vacuum.
I definitely have to get myself a satellite dish ASAP.

Doesn't feel like a long time ago that we were in '76... and now we're about to head into '81. :D

    Which will feature this...

    ...and this...

    ...and even this.

And, of course, "Yellow Pearl". We won't actually see the episode in which it was used as the theme tune for the first time - the episode of 9 July '81 - because, being also the milestone 900th episode, it was hosted by Fluff Freeman, David Jacobs, Pete Murray and the other original host from '64... :o
