Attend interview or withdraw?

    Interview for promotion on Friday....a role I am very much an outsider for.

    Been very ill this last week with flu and have done NO preparation for interview..still quite weak but recovering slowly.

    I think I'll withdraw as I'd being going in to interview totally unprepared...am I mad or should I go through with it anyhow even though I wont have a clue about lots being asked?

    What kind of an interview is it? Can you ask the opinion of someone within your company whom you trust?

    Why not treat it is a fact finding exercise?
    If you are an outsider now, you may be a frontrunner next year. It could work to your advantage knowing what sort of questions to expect next year.
    You could also ask for interview feedback afterwards, and work on addressing those issues.

    One of the very first questions you will be asked is 'Hi, how are you?'
    Come right out and say you've been under the weather all week, you don't feel as prepared as you would have liked but that you're happy to be there today.

    If it's an internal promotion, then there's a HR person co-ordinating. I would speak to them today and say that you've been under the weather all week (helps if you've been off work) and feel that you'd only be able to give the interview your best shot if you could push it back to Monday.

    Worse case scenario is that they tell you they're under pressure and can't accommodate you, in which case you go ahead and give it your best shot on Friday.
