For a fella who only yesterday couldn't give his own opinion?Duffy is certainly making his feelings for Mel felt even without saying the words

Nobody twisted Mel's arm to come on the show.

Exactly. He did it of his own free will.

He sounds very on the edge to me.

Joe should let this call go.

To me, it does not sound like he could.

This caller is pathetic. He shouldn't be let out on his own!

Easy to see how he got into trouble.

This is mad, sympathising with a man that dodged 300K worth of tax?.. as if its the same as a housewive not having the cash to pay the gas bill?..

Does he feel sorry for all the bankers that said that they were sorry for bankrupting the country while making a mint themselves?

Tbf -I don't think Mel ever thought he'd get away with it. He knew he would be fingered.
I often did something similar (not in tax! ) through stupid procrastination-only on a much smaller scale.

He lectured me in college - very nice man. Totally disorganised, his notes were wrong etc but he was a very good lecturer too.

I am not surprised and I do feel sorry for him to be honest - people make mistakes

And what did he do with all that money earned if he can't afford to pay his tax bill now?

People also make concious decisions and dont deserve sympathy.

It would be nice to see a break down of the figure, penalties and interest are usually very high.
Does anyone have access to the break down?

Another person making excuses by having a company setup to get paid through for contracting work, my heart bleeds

The estimated tax bill was 160K - plus penalties.
The Revenue estimates are sometimes a fecking joke.

My brother is a panel beater / spray painter. You should see the state of his car.

PLenty of companies out there that can manage this whole process for self employed people for a small fee.

its not that difficult to do it yourself.

This is complete bull**** from this latest caller.

Foolishly, I tuned in. Boy, am I sorry.

I'm assuming the 300 grand (was it not 285 a while ago???) is tax plus penalties. Penalties can amount to the vast majority of these settlements AFAIK.

He's the bigger eejit for coming on air in the first place.

And Joe is a muck-raker for continuing with it.
