Lets talk squad management. Louis Van Gaal spent over €300m on new players, while releasing 15 last summer alone.

In a massive, massive game we finished with Varela, Jackson, Lingard and Chris Powell on the pitch.

    Good enough?

Lets here all the excuses, I'm guessing the head in the sand lads will blame it all on injuries and ignore everything else.

LVG had an absolute shocker, some of the most baffling selections I've ever seen.

Be quiet you, it's all about possession and clean sheets, don't you know that?
I am baffled as to how anybody can say Varela was good, he got completely roasted. Wolfsburg targeted him time and time again and he got absolutely destroyed from he first minute. He was in my opinion the root cause for the second and 3rs goals and 3 or 4 more chances.he should have been off after 30 mins but was left on. Jackson did very well in my opinion though.Daley Blind awful at the back , Lingard terrible. Nick Powell????

As to how Bastian lasted 68 minutes ill never know, he was shocking from the first minute.

Mata wasn't great, but Nick Powell???

Mcnair and Young on the bench, but not fit enough to play?

Overall a horrible night for LVG, this was the game that was coming for months and almost everybody can see it now, sadly it's taken people this long though no doubt people will still see no wrong.

Give over with your crap, even those willing to give LVG time have admitted he has made mistakes and is not perfect.

Stop trying to paint a picture of a bunch of idiots who cant see anything wrong. Or do you have nothing more to add than that childishness?

lvg wont be sacked any time soon, unless he starts slipping out of the champions league places.

Our defensive solidarity this season has been primarily down to Schneiderlin, Smalling and DDG. Two of those lads are injured now. We have a very rocky period coming up.

I think even the most optimistic Man Utd fans were very doubtful coming into this game. Considering the resources this club has available to spend, along with the money thst has been spent, this champions league campaign has been an unmitigated disaster. The only thing saving LVG is our position in the premiership.

Worrying times ahead for us now.

Blaming the ref, sounds like he is making excuses.

I'd throw the Europa League now almost completely - utter tripe and embarrassing to see our club back in there.
What truly will be embarrassing is when it becomes clear that Utd aren't up to the standard there either.

I'll stress that this isn't me making excuses. LVG's performance is poor, and there's plenty of reasons to want him out now.

But I'd imagine that any top team would struggle if there was 7-10 first team players removed from the team through injury. Couple that with the fact that most of the players who left probably wouldn't have stuck round to be 5th or 6th choice, the whole "squad building" argument doesn't seem to ring true imo.

Why was I quoted in that?

I can't see the post now, but did I quote you asking if Rockman had been posting in the thread lately?

If so, I had multi-quoted it days ago while reading through the thread with the intention of responding "Haven't seen that name in here in ages" since no one else had answered. I obviously didn't make that post, but when I made my first one since then tonight the multi-quote function still threw it into my new, unrelated post. In the heat of watching the match and making the post as quick as possible, I didn't notice that you were still quoted. Apologies.

    Otherwise, I'm baffled.

You well and truly have the most embarrassing posts.

I know the football is bad and everything, but, you're still 3 points off top in the league...

Only because we're fortunate to have held onto De Gea this summer. Otherwise we could be a lot worse off.

He has his fans on here but the man is the main problem at the club, he is f*cing poison.

Since the day he took over, we have become a laughing stock and all he cares about is $$$$$.

The quicker he f*cks off into his financial role and does what he is great at- signing commercial deals for the club and puts somebody who knows about football, the better.

His comments last weekend were a disgrace to every single fan of the club, while he is there we are not going to get out of this mess

As long as he's making money for the owners he is going to be there. I can't understand how he seems to be oblivious with what is going on with the club but he seems to be and has convinced the Glazers that all is hunky dory. Or maybe he knows well and is raking in the cash so knows he is safe from a job point of view.

Our experieced players let us down tonight. Carrick, Blind, Schweinsteiger and Smalling all at fault for the goals.

I was proud of most of the youngsters, they held their own.

    Depay was shocking.

Top 4 will become top 3 next year and then we are competing with Chelsea, Arsenal, Liverpool, Spurs and City for three places.

no it wont. there will still be 4 teams qualifying next season. It's the season after that 17/18 that is up in the air.

Tonight was an awful night and performances have been poor, but to call for Van Gaal's head while we are 3 points off the top - with 1 point separating us from Arsenal and level on points with City, is absolutely, completely, utterly f*cking ridiculous.

If we start slipping back in the league then fine - but fans continuously shortening patience is both baffling and infuriating to me.

I am not annoyed losing this game especially with so many players missing, but that excuse wasn't there against PSV at Old Trafford.

No point calling for his head as he ain't going anywhere but interesting to see I'd those who have been beating the "knee jerk reaction to one result" drum all season, have now changed their mind after tonight .

He used to be passionate and one of the more mature well spoken people here.
In the last few days, and especially during transfer windows, he turns into a child and tries to get in petty digs these days.

That post was about Woodward and not lvg.

    It's just a bit much.

I fail to see how the 2nd goal was his fault. He was completely left exposed by the other 3 defenders being dragged all out position. The ball was getting to schrulle regardless of him slipping. He then puts the ball the cross field before varela is even back on his feet after the sleep.

Personally I thought it was an encouraging display. Thrown in at the deep end considering McNair and young were on the bench.

Exactly. This game was the one we all pegged as tough right from the beginning. Losing was always a possibility.

The embarrassing thing is even if we fielded our first team we would struggle to win it in all likelihood ... :(

If you gut the squad to that extent you had better know what you are doing, and you had better have prepared for obvious eventualities. Considering our constant litany of injuries a situation like this was always going to happen, everybody called it pre-season and yet here we are.

More than that, just take Varela as an example. If Van Gaal guts the squad and wants to rely on the likes of Varela thats fine, but where has he been all season? We have seen Valencia and Young at right back this season, if Varela is a viable option where has he been? Why was he not eased into the team? How the **** does his first game be the biggest game of the season?

Then multiply that by three. With one of those Chris Nick Powell. Thats not squad planning, thats a load of rubbish.

I guess that more context is needed; City and Arsenal could be well away from us now if they weren't underpreforming as well. You can never just take one stat ("3 off the top") and not look at the entire picture. if you do, you'll always find excuses to excuse people.

Overall, his preformance has been disappointing; out of the CL off the back of an easy group, out of the League cup against a **** team, and struggling in the league where we're lucky that other teams are struggling too. A lot of players underpreforming, and while they're hiding behind the manager and should take responsibility, ultimately the manager will always take the bullet cause his job is to manage them.

I personally dont have issues with his transfers; I remain happy with how the summer went. But there's a big downward trend there now, and there'll have to be a bit of an attempt made to make sure the trend doesn't continue.

I think, at the moment, I'd still be in the "Give him the window, see how it goes, judge then". But at the same time, if he went and Carlo came in, and Carlo was given the rumoured €150m....I would understand the decision.

I've no problem with Woodward being our CEO considering our intake of revenue.

However, on the footballing side he doesn't have a clue. As was said on tv there, the club is in a bad state footballing wise from the top down.

Do you want ppl to tell you that you were right is that it? You cant blame ppl for thinking three looked to be solid foundations and that the front 4 would click.

Turns out it's not clicking, that LVG is running out of options and we have injuries galore again.

It did look like it could have went better.

It was a disappointing CL campaign and tonight was ludicrous but to completely turn on the manager would be the epitome of knee jerk reaction.

We are far from perfect but we are hardly in the mire like Chelsea currently are.

Whatever about the way this campaign has gone so far, I'm completely perplexed by the Powell sub. That's done it for me personally.
