Taking off Juan Mata in the most important game so far this season isn't a great idea. Taking him off for bloody Nick Powell is ridiculous. LVG's job has just become a lot more straightforward, win the title or begin enjoying your retirement.

I think I remember saying at the end of the summer window that cutting squad numbers was either going to be an act of genius or Van Gaal's downfall. It was hardly unrealistic to foresee an injury crisis happening to this group. Clearing out "deadwood" is only effective if they are replaced with better players. They weren't replaced at all in most cases.

We may well be one of the biggest clubs in the world when it comes to brand value and marketing potential but we're far from it on the actual football pitch.

If we win nothing this season and don't come 1st or 2nd in the league then I think the club should move LVG on.

I don't think he should be given more then 20-30 million pounds in January for emergency buys.

Woodward reckoned that he hadnt any emails from fans so they must be happy. His inbox is gonna be maxed in the morning after that shambles.

I am baffled as to how anybody can say Varela was good, he got completely roasted. Wolfsburg targeted him time and time again and he got absolutely destroyed from he first minute. He was in my opinion the root cause for the second and 3rs goals and 3 or 4 more chances.he should have been off after 30 mins but was left on. Jackson did very well in my opinion though.Daley Blind awful at the back , Lingard terrible. Nick Powell????

As to how Bastian lasted 68 minutes ill never know, he was shocking from the first minute.

Mata wasn't great, but Nick Powell???

Mcnair and Young on the bench, but not fit enough to play?

Overall a horrible night for LVG, this was the game that was coming for months and almost everybody can see it now, sadly it's taken people this long though no doubt people will still see no wrong.

There has been maybe 2 good performances this season and we are almost half way through. Tonight is fully deserved - Van Gaal can have absolutely no excuses. He gutted the squad to leave absolutely no depth, and while admittedly I'm not overly fond of those gone, they were not adequately replaced. To be bringing Nick Powell, with his history of problems - onto the pitch in the most important game of the season, is nothing short of a disgrace.

Team looked better in attack than they had done in a while, but that isn't saying much. A few nervy scrambles in the last 15 don't really an attacking force make. Definitely early days but the almost £30 million spent on Depay seems a colossal waste - would have Nani in his place 100 times out of 100.

Fellaini looked good, but that's probably the first time he has done so this season (Brugge excluded). Still not a player United should be relying on at this point in LVG's reign. Most shocking for me has been Schweinsteiger - really poor of late, with the own goal and the corner papering over the cracks in his performances. Daley Blind is another senior player who has really let himself down this season, though most notably in the last few games - even allowing for the position change.

To be honest, probably doesn't matter a whole lot who he has in there. Stifling approach makes personnel less important than normal. Don't want to call for his head because it is completely knee-jerk to do so when United are firmly in the title hunt - but I expect that will soon fade away, and so will fans patience with Van Gaal.

It'd be Giggs until the end of the season if he did go, right?

If we want Pep, yes. Though then the risk is we're after Giggs to get us top 4.

If we want Carlo, he could be in next week.

    If we want Giggs fulltime.....

If LVG has to go then so has Giggs, he just sits there lookin into Louis eyes waitin for a pat on the head.

Seriously though, where is his passion eh?, why isn't he jumping off his seat at decisions or screaming at the players for mis-placed passes. He is as stony faced as his mentor and it kind of infuriates me. He's supposed to be United through and through, GAH!!!:mad::mad:

I'd take Gary Neville at this stage

Decent game all the same :)

The group was thrown away in the previous games. Wolfsburg are not a great team, United were just abysmal in defence which is sort of understandable when you look at the personnel but still unforgivable conceding straight away on two occasions. In saying that I thought Varela had a really good game.

We aren't going to finish that high. We are struggling to win games at the moment and I believe we will find ourselves out of the race by February with the way we are playing.

Tonight was better attacking performance, but where was that against CSKA away and PSV at home when we desperately needed to maximise points to avoid facing this difficult task tonight.

Ancelotti said he wants the United job.

    fellaini did ok tonight.

he was far from class. Roy Keane v Juventus was class. Paul Scholes v Barcelona was class. that wasnt class tonight.

its one of the reasons we are out of europe tonight, he and some other players are just not good enough.

A man that knows about playing in midfield Graeme Souness who actually talks sense said after the game, "what exactly does Fellaini do? Yes he roughs up a few players and wins a few flick ons but he wouldnt have got near a man utd team over the last 25 years"

I'd say cut the losses with Louis, get Ancelotti in ASAP..

Embarrassing not being able to get out of that group. Even worse spending that amount of money and only having one recognised striker in the 18. A holy show from about the 11th minute onwards and our one strongpoint this season, the defence, fell apart like a wet paper bag.

Only winning the league will save LVG, I hope. Even if we manage 2nd for example, we should thank him for his efforts at stabilising the club, send him on his way and go cap in hand to Ancelotti. The team and the club as a whole is a pale shadow of it's former self.

Great post but Fellaini was v poor first half...as was Schweinsteiger and Depay

Valera not much better. Those 4 were disappointing

I think with the subs that lvg showed he'd given up on the CL...he'll focus on the league, top 4 will guarantee him his job, rightly or wrongly.

It is the PSV performance that grates me, if we showed the urgency we showed tonight that night we wouldn't even be here.
The way we played that night was depressing.

Sack him now or wait until we lose to Sheffield United in the FA Cup. What to do, what to do indeed. :(

I know the football is bad and everything, but, you're still 3 points off top in the league...

Scandalous that we didn't win the group let alone get out of it! To be honest we didn't deserve to get through either and now Thursday night football to look to- and how it affected Liverpool Spurs etc for the season.

Damage wasn't even done tonight though, you have to be beating them teams at home even with our injuries through the rounds (I'm not using injuries as an excuse), couldn't have gotten an easier group and we showed absolutely nothing, following on from no shot on target against crystal palace and one against West Ham!! Moyes actually had United playing better than van gaal even after van gaal spending big, Moyes wasn't afraid to accept he was wrong, van gaal just talks of philosophy and system.

Realistically we have 2 strikers, one whose just turned 20 and first year here, so when we are chasing games our only option is to change wingers or throw on the big lad. Going to be a long season, at least if we win Europa league we get a spot in champions league next year I think!

Thursday night football going to completely kill us, it will mean late Sunday/Monday games which will mean we are always playing catch up...

I'd throw the Europa League now almost completely - utter tripe and embarrassing to see our club back in there.

Top 4 will become top 3 next year and then we are competing with Chelsea, Arsenal, Liverpool, Spurs and City for three places.

It's called "Ed Woodward tax " now.

Clearly this isn't the case. Smalling, Utds player of the season so far, comes off with an injury is thrown back on up front rather than finish with ten men to try and get a result.

An imaginative reading of the subs but totally off the mark.
