I'm looking to buy four dashcams (two front, two rear) when I'm in Hong Kong later this month - any suggestions??

Do many people have rear cams too ? Is there any duel system on the market?

There are plenty of duel systems out there, most have the 2 cameras in the 1 unit, others have a separate rear camera that routes around to the rear windscreen.

I use 2 separate cameras (0896 in front and 0801 in the rear), they can be useful as just as much stuff happens behind you as well as in front of you.

(I put a video in the dash cam thread this week using front & rear camera footage)

I am thinking about getting a better dashcam ( I have a LIDL one which is pretty bad) after a run in with an aggressive driver. I overtook them and they took exception to it, speeding up to block me, tailgating and then flashing their headlights around 15 times.

It was dark wet and windy, I do have footage of the rear of their car before I overtook but the number plate isn't even close to being readable no matter what I do in terms of adjusting the contrast and brightness etc..

I'm thinking I need a better camera and ideally both front and rear facing cameras. So either a dual cam (eg the Vico Marcus 5) or two separate cameras. I'm not interested in GPS and the cameras don't have to be discreet.

My car only has one 12v socket in the dashboard which is a pain

First question would be about mounting of the rear camera in a hatchback. On the rear window or the plastic tailgate trim around the rear window? Top of window or bottom of window? If the camera is on the window/tailgate does that work with opening and closing the tailgate.

Or mount to the roof of the car near the back, no opening or closing but this would probably involve pulling back the headlining and would be messy.

Did you try "gamma correct" using the VLC Player in Windows ?
This youtube vid shows the very noticeable improvement during playback.

Also, as a habit I tend to read out the reg numbers of dodgy drivers so it's recorded on the dashcam audio, if the video isn't clear enough.

On a separate note, I found an Amazon seller who seems to sell the GPS mounts for the mini 0806. Hope the "Critronic mini 0806" is compatible with the "EPrance mini 0806".

But they also sell those polarizing filters separately.
So anyone who might want to try retro-fitting their dashcam with a polarizing filter, try : Chritronic polarizing filter

It's magnetized for the Eprance mini 0806 metal holder.
So you'd need another method of adhering it to other dashcams.

    ^This,

although not always feasible in the circumstances, but great if you can do it, as at night, a lot of cams struggle to pick out number plates.

Hi guys, looking to buy a dashcam and have a budget of 60-70. Don't need anything to flashy e.g gps etc. Just something that is small, neat, reliable and has good picture quality day and night. What would you guys recommend?

i'd say a E-Prance mini 0801, it's the first of the mini series, but a great little camera, you just have to make sure it's a genuine one, as a lot look similar.

    Here's something equivalent:

Would prefer something the size of the mini 0801, seems like its discontinued, making it next to impossible to get one at a reasonable price.

    Hi
I was just wondering is there a cost effective solution or differant camera that would do the same as this one BlackVue DR650GW-2CH.
    Many thanks in advance

My 0803 refuses to turn on today
Press the power button and it comes on and gives a message shortly after
    "Battery low power"
    Wonder is it shot?

My 0801 does that every few months. I usually disconnect so it looses all reserves of power, wait 5 minutes, plug back in and then keep holding the power button for over a minute and it comes to life

    You can get adapters.
I got one out of lidl for about €7. 3 sockets and a usb port.

Your not really supposed to have to do that with a good product, i'm guessing something is faulty.

What video res are you using on your cam. Some of the less common resolutions such as 2560x1080 can drive some of the video cards mad and you will get jumpy video on playback.

Any views on this Groupon offer?

    https://www.groupon.ie/deals/gg-groupon-goods-global-gmb-h-864-587

It's not quite clear to me if it comes with any kind of mounting? I presume there is a built-in battery, and a cable to connect to the cigarette lighter.

I bought that camera (or one very similar) on Amazon for £11.99, and it actually works quite well for the price, however it's never in the world even close to being worth €47.90. that discount is just a con.

but for the price shown now, yeah, it'd be worth the punt. and going by the picture, it looks like you'd get the suction mount with it, and surely they'd have to give you the power supply as well.

Also, don't be fooled by the words night vision as all that is is a little 'white' light that you can manually turn on & off. If/when on, the reflection you'd get back from the windshield would render the camera useless. The same applies for cameras with infrared lights on them, pointless when it's 1 inch away from a reflective glass window.

If the recent thread about identifying a car in a hit and run has taught us anything, it's that a poor cam can be next to useless at night. It might be worth investing in something better, as cheap cams always seem to struggle at night.

    BIG TIME!

It's all well and good posting videos on YouTube/Boards of the idiots we encounter daily, but when it comes to instances like said video you mention. You want to be giving yourself the best opportunity to protect yourself, even if it's after the event.

Don't know much about dash cams so was hoping someone could help. I have a budget of €200 and was hoping to get a dash cam with dual cams for front and back. Any recommendations?

Fair points, though as an introduction to dashcamming, it seems like a decent way to dip my toe in the water.

Thanks, very useful, particularly the point about the night vision.

FYI, groupon is absolute shit to buy from for electronics. I have never once seen a deal that was worth it on there for this kind of stuff.

Here is what looks like the same camera from China for 11quid:
    http://www.ebay.ie/itm/New-Hot-Black-2-4-Full-HD-1080P-Car-DVR-HDMI-Camera-Dash-Cam-G-Sensor-/201425420706?hash=item2ee5e401a2:g:Q8AAAOSwQPlV8VS8

Yeah, it'll take 4 weeks to get to you, but all I'm saying is that this *deal* is not worth jumping on. I'd spend 50ish on a decent camera that will do you for years to come, over that PoS.

The speed of the video playback will depend on
    1) the speed of your TF card
    2) whether you connect your dashcam to a USB 2 or USB 3 port on your PC
    3) whether your USB cable is USB 2 or USB 3
    4) then the usual limitations of laptops/pcs, memory, graphics card capability, obsolete graphics card drivers, cpu speed etc.

Try copying your video files from the dashcam to your local hard drive and point Registration Viewer to your hard drive.
If that plays fine, then you know it's not registration viewer.

I'm not sure if registration viewer installs the latest video codecs or not.
Might be worth getting the latest codec pack.
