Already have eFibre. Will cancelling my landline affect my internet?

Howdy all,

So I've got my landline house phone with Vodafone, and I've got eFibre with Eircom.

Honestly, we never use the landline anymore, so we're considering cancelling the landline so we've got one less bill to worry about. But would this affect my internet at all? Do I need the active landline to maintain an internet access, or are they separated off nowadays that I can cancel one without hurting the other?

You can cancel phone services, but you still need the copper path from the cabinet to your house so theres still a line rental charge included in your bill.

This mixed provider stuff can be messy, shouldnt be, but...

I'd call eir and make sure your line is attached to a CRN (8883- instead of 01/021- etc) THEN cancel with Vodafone. Otherwise cancelling one might nuke the other.

Get the broadband with Vodafone. They offer broadband only so there is no voice services which require line rental.

There are only two ways of obtaining a connection to the internet. Using a wireless frequency or physical connection.

Wireless can be 3g, 4g, satellite or fixed wireless (local wireless transmitter) Physical can be a cable (non telephone), telephone line, fibre.

There may be others I've missed.

Yes. Vodafone provide it through telephone line. They sell broadband only without telephone service.

If you are in contract with eircom efibre then simply phone them up and ask to be moved to their broadband only efibre. They will cease the phone service with Vodafone. It will leave you with just broadband using the exact same modem as you currently have.

At this point, most providers offer lanlines for free or couple them with bundles with broadband that make the whole thing cheaper. Be worth looking into, you can always get an offer especially if your willing to take a year contract.

I'd no interested in a land line when I moved into my current house, but the bundle I got from UPc at the time made the cost lower. The land line is free pretty much. And because its there, and free, I'm actually using it the odd time

With UPC/VMs single service fee at €6 and phone for €5 its always cheaper with them unless you also get TV.

With eir WLR based systems theres a wholesale fee involved with PSTN so you'll usually find standalone BB is a few euro cheaper, but literally just a few.
