Are you saying you don't want to get to that style or level of success? Fergie was a perfect fit for UTD, we may never see another manager capable of doing wht he did at UTD. You have to be open to change, you have to move on and adapt. Fergie didn't have an answer to the Barca possession system. It cost us two UCL's. A strong UTD playing LVGs style would have a better chance.

You build foundations then you tinker with it. There is nothing to say we can't have UTD history in possesion style but you can't do it all at once. LVG has a big job on his hands, give him time, he is getting there.

That style? No, I don't, and the success does not necessarily come with the style. Don't forget that the teams you want to copy also happened to have some of footballs greatest ever players, Barca's success came in no small part because they had the likes of Messi, Xavi and Iniesta in their prime, backed up by scrubs like Villa, Eto or Puyol. The tiki taka style worked for them but that doesn't make it the be all and end all.

And Fergie losing two finals to Barca had little to do with style, everything to do with Xavi, Busqets, Iniesta et al facing a midfield of the likes of Carrick, Anderson and a well past his prime Ryan Giggs. A strong United team playing Fergies style would also have had a better chance.

There is nothing to say United can't be a possession based side, but there is nothing to say we have to be either. Its far too simplistic to take a guy like Van Gaal and say "what you did ten years ago, do it again for us" and just assume this is the best way to do things. You might like it but not everybody has to.

I don't see what LVG is tearing apart.

The league itself is different even since the time Fergie left, there is far more money for other clubs to invest, so the overall quality of the teams we play is higher than a few years ago.
Possession football doesn't have to be boring, if you have the ball the other team can't hurt you, and if you have the right players in attack it will deliver.

I maintain the argument we don't have the right players up front and in that I exclude both Martial and Memphis. Lingard was prolific in front of goal so not sure what happened him, we can't blame LVG when he puts the ball over the bar or wide.

Maybe some liked it when we relied on players like Cleverley, and teams were running through our midfield and we were not good at keeping possession.

At the moment I am happy with our goalkeeper, happy enough with defense but wouldn't be happier with another defender as Jones is so brittle, happy enough with the midfield but Carrick will have to be replaced soon.
I am not happy with our attack/offense, as I said exclude Martial and Memphis. I like Lingard, but what is uo with Mata's poor form? Rooney has been in decline for a long time now and should be told he is no longer a guaranteed starter, it might make him think about his future...

We don't have a Cantona, a Cole, Yorke, RVN, CR7, Sheringham or a Solskjaer like we had in the past. Van Gaal will be investing majorly when it comes to our attack, it is quite poor for a team of United's stature.

    Exactly.

None of the European top players will want to join us as we are playing so horribly.

That leaves PL players, aside from Kane or Lukaka who would both cost us an absolute bundle there is no one that I can think of.

Its frustrating to think that if we had someone that could provide a bit of goal scoring magic where we would be in the league considering our rivals are all floundering.

Somebody somewhere is cancelling an open top bus.

Was reading John Aldridge's column during the game,he was on about the pool having got all the away games against the top teams out of the way and all they would need to do is turn Anfield into a fortress

"If Anfield is made a fortress, who can stop us?"

Then boom they go down 1 nil away to Newcastle

    And that's the issue...

Could we take another risk and go for Mane?

Not much choice but its the piece if the puzzle we are currently missing

There was talk of Cavani again, and at this stage one would take him. L'Equipe say United can have Cavani for £32 million.

    A proven goalscorer...makes sense

I'd have some of that please

You'll be paying 40m+ for Mane, and probably 50m+ for Kane or Lukaku.

Someone like Cavani might get mixed reviews but is more proven at a far lesser financial risk. But I think we may have to accept that we'll be "overpaying" for players as per the nature of what the transfer side of the PL is becoming...

We will be better in the long run for having stuck will LVG and allowing him to build and complete his project than we will getting into a firing/hiring cycle. Look at Madrid and Chelsea, a complete lack of stability and consistancy. Is that what you think is better?

I think you're as attached to the longevity of the Ferguson era as I am to the style but we both have to deal with a new reality.

Hire and fire is exactly what the future holds for Utd management. Moyes got 8 months, that says all about that.

What you suggest about Utd becoming a possession style club regardless of who's in charge or what players we have worries me.

I don't think you're right and I think in the summer LVG will be replaced perhaps by someone with the same philosophy, perhaps not, but with a mandate to ensure fans are entertained and from a business perspective feel they get their money's worth.

Massive week for LVG and this team, Wolfsburg game is now probably the biggest since he took over.

Thursday night football would be an absolute disaster!

Shouldn't be an issue, pay for one of them regardless. But its got to happen in January and I'm sticking by the thought that if it does happen it will make our season

    1. No its not, thats a crazy statment.

    2. No he won't. Not a chance, even without a title.

Moyes was an exception. LVG is on target, we are in the title race, we beat Wolfsburg we top our UCL group. Even if both of those don't pan out the Glazers will let him see out his contact and I would like to see that happen.

They were very sure on Sunday Supplement on Sky Sports that the Glazers and others at the top at United are very happy with Van Gaal, as one journalist said, they were told this from high up sources in United, whom I presume was Ed.

Impressive goal return by the lad. I'm surprised he hasn't landed in the premier league yet.

    What if doesn't work domestically?

Utd aren't the first team to try play a possession based game in England.

I'm not even sure I'd want it to work. I know hipsters love it but it bores the hell out of me especially with the kind of player Utd can expect to sign these days.

I remember watching Brazil v France in the Q/F of WC '86. Platini, Tigana, Rochteau, Socrates, Falcao, Junior, ...Zico. I was mesmerised by it because I was used to seeing the hoofball of English soccer and it showed me another way to play the game. But I tried watching it again a few years ago and my god it was boring because at the end of all those beautiful passes I knew there wasn't a goal. I have that feeling watching Utd now only without the beauty.

Why does liking possession football and dominating games make someone a hipster?

Does whipping out the 18th century thesaurus and using words like bucanneering make someone better?

Utd need a DOF or whatever you want to call the fixer for transfers.

Woodward has been a disaster and, even if he has final say, it's better to have a face other than the club CE looking like a plonker when things don't work out.

Utd need to spend a lot more money and things could get very messy.

Woodward has not been a disaster. At least he is going after the best players. I think it was Real Madrid's mouthpiece Marca that called him the Ronaldo of football CEOs.

Oh christ, there is still one left that actually believes this.

Mata, ADM, Falcao, Schweinsteiger, Morgan, Depay, Darmain, Herrera, Shaw and Martial.

The biggest sports sponsorship deal in history with Adidias for 750m. Multiple million euro sponsorships massively reducing our debt.

Yeah Woodward is cluesless and is doing a terrible job (the reality he is one of the best Cheif Execs out in the game)

No thanks. Was never convinced by him. Done nothing at international level. Its alright banging in the goals in Serie A. Reckon he would be a flop in the PL.
