Tried Aldi compatible capsules last night after blitzing though the included free ones.

Not overly impressed with the Aldi ones so far. The plastic on the end is perforated and lined with aluminium so piercing does not seem to be a problem. I did however notice that there is a short stream of water before the coffee kicks in.

If you compare the Aldi/Lidl to super value you'll see the supervalu ones are almost identical in shape to the nespresso, whereas the Aldi/Lidl do not have the protrusions at the rear. The Aldi, one hence has to be pre-pierced and hence foil wrapped, whereas the Lidl ones in my experience, dont properly pierce and result in poor flow ( and the risk of stressing the pump)

I found that the lower end nespresso machines struggle with the lidl/aldi capsules while the higher end machines can handle them a lot better. Not a scientific study though!

Some machines were deliberately redesigned to scupper the compatibles. Theres lists online of the problem machines.

I cant see how you could design it to scupper compatibles, the capsules are either compatible or they are not. If you mimic the nespresso capsule completely , the machine cant tell what it is

The problem is the " compatibles" are all saving costs by cutting corners, in essence , they are not identical capsules hence they dont work identically

well I dont think a lattismo is at the lower end, but it struggles with Aldi and Lidl capsules and if you examine them you can see why

They made the 3 spikes that pierce the bottom of the capsule thinner (ie. weaker), so more likely to get damaged if you're using plastic pods instead of the aluminium ones. The plastic "blunts" them, in a way.

Once the spikes get damaged, they stop piercing the pods and instead crush them, followed by a sad dribble of water - no coffee for you.

buts thats the point, arguably a plastic capsule is not a compatible capsule

Bought the Krups Nespresso Pixie with Aeroccino for €149 in store today rather than online as I needed it asap.
    Cos I spent over €50 I got a voucher for €10.
    Happy Days

How about taking off the blinkers and googling it there have been several antitrust cases against Nestle, the French one has all the details you could want. Nestle changed the machine and capsules four times since 2009 to make competitors capsules incompatible with new machines. Each change coincided with a large competitor joining the market.

You're also entitled to €90 worth of nespresso credit from their winter promotion.

I bought the nespresso pixi on Sunday @€;149. The item was paid for and i recieved a confirmation email. Today i received a follow up email saying the order was cancelled as they were unable to fill the order. A quick look on the website shows that they are still in stock but have gone back up too full price. Surely i have some recourse here as a contract was entered into??

I would imagine so... make a post on their Facebook page and send a tweet about it...

I don't have a twitter, but its exactly this kind of scenario I would open one for...

Check out the Nespresso website. A new offer has started which may be better value than what debenhams were offering.

Are there any codes for debenhams at the mo?

I got the Pixie, it's fab, already got the first 30 instalment of free nespresso capsules applied to my account. We got the Lidl capsules for everyday but the Nespresso ones are definitely better quality.
Tip - Lidl milk does not froth (don't know why) - Aldi does! So if your Aeroccino doesn't seem to work, try switching milk. You need to use low fat or skimmed apparently.

I know it sounds weird, but I think it has to do with the time of the year.

I find all milks work fine during summer (and late spring, early autumn months), but many have problems in winter!

I believe the issue is that during summer cows are kept outside and eat grass, while in winter they are kept inside and eat hay, which seems to effect he consistency of milk!

Or maybe its about how much they process the milk...? depending on the distribution network some might like to nuke the milk through pasturisation & homoginisation in order to make it last longer on the shelf!

Typically Irish milk is less processed than what much of the rest of the world get.. So our milk is more natural, but doesn't last long in the fridge... When I moved abroad I had to look it up, because the milk here lasts ages, even though I've never seen a cow in this side of the world... in Ireland my milk would go off after a few days...

I read that Irish milk is pasturised to 70degrees, while elsewhere its 140degrees.

Interesting. I've been using the Aeroccino since May but has stopped frothing milk for the last week or so. It appears to be making the same effort but it doesn't froth. Same milk (Tesco) as before. I was going to ring Nespresso this week, might try another milk.

Try another milk! I was about to ring up and give out as well but my new milk is frothy as anything! Both are 1.5% fat. So I can currently recommend Aldi low fat!

full fat milk ends up overflowing...

Nope I agree with posters comment on milk, I've used multiple other milks around this time of the year and they don't froth half as well... Another reason to dislike winter... :D

While it is true that milk is pasteurised in different ways in different countries, it isn't the case here.

I'm talking about the same bottle of full fat milk from my local shop (not Aldi/Lidl). Works fine in summer, doesn't work in winter. Same has happened every year for the last three years I've owned a Nespresso.

In winter I buy a no fat, 1 litre milk carton in addition to my normal milk just for the Nespresso. The no fat milk does froth all year round, but is an unnecessary extra expense in the summer months.

I know dawn diaries pasteurise their milk in two different ways depending on where it's going, the shelf life on one way is much longer.

Bit off topic but definitely a time of year issue other people are noticing....

I have a latissimo, i dont notice any significant change in the froth, I use all sorts of milk with gay abandon.

Milk in ireland is made in a very consistent way , even if the consistency of the milk does change with the seasons and the cows diet , i.e. a change from grass to silage etc
