So America have just warned it's citizens to be careful of entering any crowded spaces in any country outside of America... Due to the threat of terrorism...

Literally anywhere... what kind of idiots are we dealing with... I wouldn't mind, but even if terrorists did kill a couple of thousand this year, you'd still be in more danger going to public spaces in the States... I'd be more worried about passing the police in the States rather than walking down the street in Paris right now.

It's a shame they don't tell their citizens to avoid places such as McDonalds, as more Americans die from obesity/heart disease than terrorism.

This is going to be another gun control thread isn't it?

It's not intended to be... I'm just in shock at the fear mongering that goes on in the US.

Talking to a client of mine yesterday & she's cancelled a holiday to Belgium in two weeks time... Have to say, it I'd still go, they weren't even planning to spend long in Brussels.

Where did it say in the article "outside America"?

It was so much easier to blame it on Them. It was bleakly depressing to think that They were Us. If it was Them, then nothing was anyone's fault. If it was us, what did that make Me? After all, I'm one of Us. I must be. I've certainly never thought of myself as one of Them. No one ever thinks of themselves as one of Them. We're always one of Us. It's Them that do the bad things.

I don't know why but it's annoying me that they keep mentioning February the 24th; the alert expires then, you have to be careful until then, the 24th of February is the day. I know it's 3 months from today (being the 24th) but the way the date keeps getting mentioned makes it seem as if something special happens then.

Maybe it's just the reports that I've seen (or maybe it's just me...) Or maybe it's just because it's one of the top stories on Irish news.

It didn't say outside America in the article but it did say "Global".

    US issues global travel alert

These alerts are provided by their foreign affairs dept... they are not travel warnings for inside the US.

I use similar warnings issued by the Irish Department of Foreign Affairs while travelling in the Middle East. The US ones are taken very seriously & can effect business travel.

The warnings are usually country specific.

But it doesnt say outside of America only.

My reading is they are saying be careful of public gatherings everywhere. In America. Out of America.

The pedants have taken over... I should have known better than to post something in AH...

It doesn't ****ing matter if its for the US or the Globe... it's extreme fear mongering...

If you're gonna be a pedant, be a good pedant... they never mentioned public gatherings, they said crowded places... I should leave work now in that case...

Yeah it applies to the U.S. too. It says global and it's just an alert, not a warning.

Millions of people will be travelling for thanksgiving in the coming days, mostly within the United states. That's probably why they issued it

These are issued all the time....they are even issued for IW protests.

If its fear mongering, its not a good effort.

Where as the rest of the world die because terrorism whilst relatively healthy?

To be fair all they've said is that people should "be vigilant". Which is kind of a good general rule when you're travelling, but it'll be of **** all use to you during a terrorist attack.

This is probably a "look over there" tactic since there are currently a large number of threats across the US in advance of Thanksgiving day event this weekend. They can't have people avoiding commercial districts this weekend, but they have to be seen to be worrying about daesh.

    Fear mongering!?!

Ha! Brussels has been on lockdown for FOUR days, last I checked Brussels is in Belgium

I think your 'shock' and outrage is merely good ole anti US hating

But attempt to backtrack otherwise , entertain us, hater.

I don't hate the states at all. I just don't like the fear that is being spread...

You must really hate the fear when your Dept Of Foreign affairs issue a similar release!

And, these things don't frighten anyone.
That's an assumption on your part.

Like I said, these warnings are taken very seriously. I have arrived for meetings in certain countries and my American counterparts have not travelled... one reason is that they pay attention to the travel notices from their government & secondly that their companies insurance company would not allow them to travel... Sometimes the warnings are legitimate, but sometimes it seems OTT.

My company made it clear... travel or lose your job. But they were UK based.

Because they are country specific and relate to actual threats... as opposed to telling people that the world is under threat & don't go near a crowd of people in any country in the world...

The constant refrain from western governments and the public is that ISIS and terrorism will not be allowed to effect our values and way of life.

An then the governments lock down Brussels, issue a global travel warning from the US and in France they have introduced 3 months emergency law meaning the police need no reason to stop and detain anyone.

Seems to me that ISIS are getting exactly what they want. 130 people were killed in Paris. That is a big deal, but statistically it is immaterial. More people than that die each year on Irish roads yet we don't close off the roads in a panic! A bit of perspective is required.

The threat of ISIS is being totally blown out of all proportion. Yes they need to be tackled, yes the threat is a real one and need to be taken seriously, but this is getting out of hand.
