Golf MK4 stopped working

My Golf MK4 was driving fine until the light started to fade out little by little both in the dashboard and all the other outside lights, the engine started to feel like if it was giving up on me, this lasted for about 2 to 3 minutes, I was in a narrow national road so I had nowhere safe where to park, luckily the car kept going for an extra minute with absolutely no light whatsoever until I reached an area where I can park and then the car gave up on me completely and nothing was working, I couldn't turn on any lights and it was impossible to turn on the engine.
10 min later the car started again but with very low lights so I managed to drive it for about 2 min until I reached my destination, is it safe to say that there is an issue with the battery or is this something else? thanks.
