You were heralding Phil Neville and John O Shea(who has actually played every position on the pitch except left wing :pac: ) a little while ago. They are the ultimate utility players.. maybe look at Fellaini like that, a player that can fill in numerous positions. He is incredibly useful squad player.

Dave I take your point on board and I'll try and explain my rational. Phil and John we're at least 2nd choice in their positions during their times and often had extended periods of playing in them. John at Right and left full. They filled a role whereby they could play those multiple positions and contribute to the team as a whole. For me Fellaini isn't 1st or 2nd choice in any role. In CM he's behind Carrick, basti, morgan and Herrera, possibly Daley too. Up top he's behind Rooney and Martial. He also doesn't contribute a lot when he does come on and is as likley to get a yellow as contribute an assist or goal and thats not enough. So if we got a reasonable offer I think it only fair to let him go for his career if he wanted to go. If he's happy to sit about as a squad player then so be it. I hope that explains my point on him. I hope he does prove me wrong on it though..

But the one position he isn't filling in is the position we all thought we were spending £27m on, central midfield. I think he still has the attributes to play there but he is here a few years now and has never come close to making an impact in that role.

Battering ram Felliani is useful from time to time, but like brinty I find it frustrating that we don't see the all action Felliani around the middle of the park.

I agree, but that doesn't take away from the fact that he is a very useful squad player which is what we have been debating. I would love to see him take a game by the scruff of the neck from the middle of the park like he does with Belgium. I reckon (I hope)we will see more of him in the holding role now with Carrick out long term.

I'd agree with that Dave, well said sir

Gowl I understand your point and I admit I might be biased here but he's rarely used in midfield so saying we'd need to buy a midfielder to replace him is a bit odd..
and that's why I'm frustrated with Fellaini.. where should he be playing.. is he a 6 a 9 or ????
LVg is to blame for the usage of him in certain positions but I wish he'd just say i'm a 6 please play me there...

Usually starts off in midfield and follows the attack and joins Rooney as the most advanced most times.

Don't get me wrong. He isn't the worlds greatest player.
I think most of us with like to see him do what he does up top in midfield but we generally have the ball 60/70% of the time passing it around the center circle so he isn't needed there.

He dosent start much so lvg knows this as well.

Surely if he wasn't 2nd choice in a position he wouldn't be making the bench :D

Ok so lets wrap up this Fellaini debate

He's a useful squad player, we're all frustrated with/for him, we'd like to see the big guy do well and hope to see him contribute more in midfield...

    is that fair...

He is worth 20 million. Who says he isn't. He is worth what someone will buy him for.
Saying he isn't worth x is arbritary.

A good squad player. Nothing wrong with him there at all. We have a very young squad and a 27/28 year is good. Life experiences are tougher when you are young.
But that's a silly point I made, just like saying well he is a squad player.
Ya let's throw in some 19 year old who can barely grow a beard.

Ya but who are we upgrading Fellaini with? Mane? He dosent play the same position as Fellaini so it's another exercise in futility.
Not to mention it's a cliche, it's a team sport.

You make it sound like the board are some cut throat evil corporation when we all know they aren't.
Utd have never been a club that sells when people offer 20 million for a player. They would spend more replacing that player
Players will be let go or sold when the manager dosent need them or the player wants to go and we have seen time after time utd don't Particulary care about how much they get for players.

It's fans who care more about fees because it gives them something to judge a player on just like you did with Fellaini by saying he isn't worth 20 million rather than actually looking at the team as a whole.

You let your hatred of him cloud your views. The only reason I can't think of that is that becuase he is tall and has an Afro and that is different to what you are used to seeing so you mock it.

exactly, we usually sell good players for dirt cheap, RVP 4m, Nani 4m, Rafael 2.5m, Javier Hernandez 7m, evra 1.2m.

I was agreeing with what Brinty had said about him. He is in his 3rd season at united now and we still don't know what his best position is. van Gaal seemed to think he was a striker at the start of the season but after a few appearances it was clear as day he wasn't a striker, so what is he? He's not a midfielder..

Martial, Rooney, Carrick ,Fellaini all out of game tomorrow?

    Watford away?

Has 0-0 written all over it : /

This reminds me of the criticism you hear about goalies from GAA supporters sometimes - "I don't trust him under a high ball".

Your level of trust is not a relevant metric for analysis of anything bar your levels of anxiety.

Similarly, fans thinking there's something meaningful to the fact that they personally can't make up their mind about where Fellaini ought to be playing is mind boggling.

Bucketybuck is even upset because "he isn't filling in is the position we all thought we were spending £27m on", as if Woodward and Moyes had spun him a yarn about how Fellaini was going to be a midfielder in order to get him to personally ok the deal.

    This stuff is deranged.

I only watched about an hour of the England game but thought Rooney was continuing his recovery in form quite well.

I don't think so. It will be interesting to see if some of the younger lads can step up when needed. I still reckon we will have enough to win the game though. I reckon this is what we will see

    ddg
    Darmian-smalling-blind-rojo
    The schmidfield
    Mata
    Herrera
    Lingard
    Memphis

Not enough Ashley young in that team... for some reason Darmian has been cat out and i'd see young starting at RB.. talk of Smalling not making it would see Jones step in

    Possibly
    ddg
    Young-Jones
    blind-rojo
    The schmidfield
    Mata
    Herrera
    Lingard
    Memphis

Romero, Darmian, Wilson, Borthwick-Johnson, Perreira, Tuanzebe, Fletcher

The last 2 or 3 games he looked like he was playing himself back into form not brilliant but getting better as the matches went on. The last match he was pretty good.

we were linked with Mane in summer but are now linked with Sane in winter.

Leroy Sane, 19 yr old Schalke winger

Think a tough game has been made even tougher with those injuries. Anything less than a win will still be disappointing but Watford have kept 4 clean sheets in their 6 home games so far this season; barring an idiotic tackle against Palace (if I'm remembering it right) this would likely be 5 out of 6. Hopefully we can get an early goal to open up the game, could be another long one otherwise. I hope Memphis starts & takes his chance, the talent is plain to see but he's struggled in his early months here.

I live in hope that we bid the £72 million that Juventus are reported to want for Pogba, then we can sell Fellaini if we want to.

Speaking of Juventus, United are said to have serious interest in their centre back - Daniele Rugani. He is 21 years old.

Meanwhile Nasser Al-Khelaif, the man who runs PSG had a meeting with Jorge Mendes in Madrid, the rumours do seem to favour Ronaldo moving to PSG rather than to United next summer.

Just looking at Sane's record this season and it is good and he is a right winger.

In the Bundesliga and Europa League his stats are - played 16, 5 goals and 4 assists. He is an Adidas player and Liverpool also interested in him.

We could do with a right winger.

because sadly there is an element of our support that just loves to find a scapegoat in our team and turn on our players when things are going wrong, but at the same time they are willing to completely ignore the real issues perhaps lie elsewhere.

it happened to Evra, it happened to Nani, it happened to Cleverly, it happened to Welbeck, now that they are all gone, its turned to Rooney.

anybody wanting Rooney to be injured, isnt a United fan. its f*cking pathetic.

The decision to ship off RVP and Falcao was absolutely right.

Two players whose star has waned earning about £500,000 between them, way too much for bit part players.

    Chico still stings though.

You have a valid point but there is one important factor you have failed to mention.

Just because people need a scapegoat doesn't mean Rooney hasn't been totally ****ing gash this season.
