Grinder to use with AeroPress

Guys, I'm keen to join the world of non-instant coffee and am thinking of getting an AeroPress to start with.

I'm wondering if someone could recommend a grinder? As I'm just starting, I don't really want to spend a lot of money but any recommendation/advice would be welcome.

As the Porlex was too pricey for me at the moment. I used parcel motel to get it shipped for ~26. I'll let you know how I get on with it.

I used a Hario Skelter with my Aeropress at home for the first six months before upgrading. I still use it in work every day. Works great.

Got this, this morning and its great. I made a coffee for my Moka pot and set it for a fine grind. The adjuster works by tightening a nut to it's tightest and unwinding from there. There are clicks signifying different grind levels. I ground at 3 clicks from the finest and it worked great. Very consistent grind to my eyes and easy to do. I'll post up a picture of the grind, I'd bet it's pretty identical to the porlex tbh. Thumbs up for me anyway!

Just a bit of an experiment. The left hand side is lavazza pre ground, and right is my finest grind from the hand grinder. Seems like a win!

I actually had another look at mine and it's the Hario one

They look almost identical

I got the Aldi version a few weeks ago and does the job grand if you don't have the time or energy to hand grind. These actually very finely cut the beans like a blender rather than grind the beans so you get very slightly less flavour. I usually use it if I need to make a big pot of coffee - still a million times nicer than pre-ground coffee!

Can you grind just enough for one Aeropress shot, or do you generally grind a lot and store the remainder in Tupperware?

Oh yeah you can grind as little or as much as you like. You just grind for a bit longer to get it fine enough for the aeropress. There'll always be a certain amount of bigger grits left though. If I just need a quick shot and am feeling lazy though it does a good enough job. Tescos do an own brand one too that I used for ages.

Grinding a bigger amount for a drip coffee machine it comes in handy.

If it's a blade one, and at that price I'm going to assume it is it'll give really large grind and a really small grind together.
So you'll have varying surface area in your grind which is a bad thing

You need a burr grinder

It's up to you. If I have the time I like to grind by hand with the burr grinder but if I was in the office and short for time I wouldn't be too fussed - it's still ten times better than the coffee at work!

Pretty much the reason I bought the Aeropress

I'll give it a shot. Not fussed on having 100% of the grind perfect, I'll save my "perfect coffees" for those I have on Saturday morning at home with the moka pot.
