Great point . The first Mayo game showed the flaws in what we thought was a more defensive set up and tidied it up well

Don't think the flaws were in the system per se, they were in our mindset. That affected our discipline & that was reflected massively on the scoreboard.

After the final, one of the players said they went into the first semifinal way too hyper. They just weren't able or willing to calm it down a bit and & approach defending patiently and systematically. They went at it hell for leather & the game soon turned into the Cillian O'Connor show. Once we got our heads right & discipline improved, the ship was righted to a very great extent. If we'd been that level headed from the get go, the game would have been over long before half time & the bould Cillian could have gotten the 4 o'clock train back to Castlebar.

Why we went into a semi final, for the second year in a row, with our heads not where they needed to be, was a tad troubling. Given how much this team have won and achieved at the very highest level, such an admission took me by surprise. But we'll leave the reason for that, until next year, along with the 'What to do about Deano?' dilemma. I can't handle thinking about that, until I have had my turkey and Christmas pud at the very least.

I agree 100% it was the point I failed to make , we thought the set up was more defensive but had not adjusted fully, So the second game was very similar the lads fell back and cut off well but they fixed the tackle, most other things had been practiced earlier that year.

Also if you remember when Rory went off in the first mayo game the attitude on the pitch changed I think that impacted on the rest of the game.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,569 ✭✭✭✭ProudDUB

Yep. I think they got so used to not having to be 100% spot on with the tackles, as for every point from a free we conceded, we were well able to to score 4 down the other end. But when we were coming up against our first crop of All Star worthy defenders, the scores didn't come so easily. Add in the fact that the first semi final was the game that we (as well as the entire media) have had our eye on since the loss to Donegal, its understandable that adrenaline levels would be as high as they were. It could have been a recipe for disaster.

To be honest, I was very worried heading into the replay. I really didn't think that we could turn it around as quickly as we did. Great credit to everyone involved that we did. Mind you, the 3 goals in 9 minutes, helped just a tad too. :p

    When is O'Gara back?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,569 ✭✭✭✭ProudDUB

Some time next Spring, I'd imagine. The time line for cruciate injuries, from injury to full recovery, is about a year. He did it back in March, so barring any complications, we'll probably see him back some time during the league.

Does the LUAS red line go that far?

Edit: on a more serious note, the Leinster Gaa website is already showing the game as a Saturday 7pm throw in on 4th June. Ok it's a bank holiday weekend, but will make for awkward homeward journies especially if you want to make an evening of it.

Hotels booking up/booked up already. Just got mine- in case anybody is thinking of staying for the match.

Bank holiday weekend- also same weekend as Cat Laughs I've heard.

Is this an example of the "wit" that the dubs are supposed to have?

Cat laughs weekend? Now that shows a lack of thought. Laois' idea of Portlaoise looks a much better option now. A Saturday evening game, near 9pm finish in a town already packed for a festival, pubs already jammed, hope Iarnroid Eireann, Bus Eireann and Dublin coach have extra services ready but even that'll ruin the post match experience of a rare away game.

Jesus, lighten up. It's gonna be a long 6 months, if we can't take the piss out of ourselves in our own flippin' thread.

Corny, it's near Leitrim....take a left in Roscommon (where ever that is,) take the second right after the church and it'll be on the right. If you wind up on Valencia Island, you've gone about 200 yards too far.

Try a 7pm throw in Dublin when you live in Gweedore :P:D

Glad you are getting down the country, sick of seeing people crying on social media every year about "home games" and "favouritism" and other such bollocks.

Funny banter on the Twitter machine, 'twixt Richie Hogan (whoever he is) Jack McCaffrey, Mossy Quinn & Philly McMahon on The Trip. :D

No. We play non Dublin based replays in Pairc Ui Chaoimh in Cwark. I think it's been a rule since '83.

We can call it The Trip Back To The Kip. :p

Great win by Cuala today. Not easy beating any Kilkenny team. Be good for Dublin hurling if they can drive on.

Yeah would be a massive boost for the hurling club scene in Dublin - surprising in some respects but then again not in others to consider that Crumlin were the last Leinster Club winners in 1979

    2016 league fixtures confirmed.

    Round 1 Saturday Jan 30th - Dublin v Kerry, Croke Park, 7pm
    Round 2 Saturday February 6th - Mayo v Dublin, Castlebar, 7pm
    Round 3 Saturday February 27th - Dublin v Monaghan, Croke Park, 7pm
    Round 4 Saturday March 5th - Dublin v Cork, Croke Park, 7pm
Round 5 Saturday March 12th Down v Dublin, Newry, 7pm
Round 6 Saturday March 26th Dublin v Donegal, Croke Park, 7pm
Round 7 Sunday April 3rd, Roscommon v Dublin, Dr Hyde Park, 2pm

Not a big fan of these 7pm starts. They were at bit of a novelty at first, but they are very hard on spectators from counties that are far away from each other. You'd be lucky getting home before midnight. Can't be all that easy on the players either. Plus, it's generally fcuking BALTIC at that time of the night. Coming back from Castlebar last March, I think I was in Kinnegad before my hands finally thawed out. :(

Yeah agreed I'm leaving Castlebar alone next year, its Newry and a visit to the graveyard in Roscommon for me

Yeah, we're lucky, we have motorways to most places we need to go, but Jesus, having to start the trek back to Donegal at 9 o'clock at night....that's very harsh.

Then again, I've been critical of the GAA for arranging games in direct competition to the Six Nations games, coz that's a fight that meaningless league games are never gonna win. It's no way to promote or grow the competition, but still....6 out of 7 games at night?

    Don't envy you pal.

If it were up to me, I'd have throw in no later than 4pm, unless the two counties are in the same province. Making people undertake a 3-4 hr road trip at nine o'clock at night, in winter driving conditions is madness.

I like the later throw in times for the bit of atmosphere they tend to create.

I agree, those few league games that were in Croke Park on a Sunday afternoon had a desperate atmosphere.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,569 ✭✭✭✭ProudDUB

The evening games often do have a great atmosphere alright, but I think that's down to the games being close fought affairs, with the eventual outcome often being decided in the final minutes. You can't beat that kind of excitement, even if its "only" the league.

Plus, those games are often against against our biggest rivals & the stronger teams that we have history with - Mayo, Kerry, Tyrone etc. (I wonder if the telly networks get a say in that, as Saturday night games get better ratings than Sunday afternoon ones do.) Those games are usually a cracker. The atmosphere in most of our league games against Mayo and Kerry, is better than most of the early round Leinster games imo, regardless of where/when they are played.

I have to agree, the evening games are far better. You could be freezing your ar$e off at 2pm on a Sunday afternoon. I actually think more people go to the evening games, it gets a bit of better craic going when you can head in and have a couple beers or make an evening out of it.

Have they said what will be part of the Spring Series tickets? 3 or 4 games?
