Friday plan called for 7 miles easy, travelling back from London, was absolutely wrecked when I got back, no running. Daughter was running in a local schools 5k, and she won the girls primary school run. She was wearing her first place medal when I got home and was delighted with herself. I was trying to get her into the running last year but she was pushing back, hopefully she'll get into it of her own accord now.

Sat, plan called for 4/7 mile easy run. Again no running, family stuff took precedence.

Sunday, the plan called for 22 miles easy. I nearly didn't get out for this, but just about managed to find 3 hours to get it done. Very windy out there today and I faded badly over the last 2 miles. Not a great run, and a poor week in general, chances of a decent time in SS are fading as work shows no sign of letting up.

All the very best to all Boardsies running DCM tomorrow.

I am hesitant to say anything Tbl as I know you have a (very good) coach, and I don't want to step on toes. But your issue seems to be more with the marathon rather than running in general. With your mad work schedule and family life it is very hard to get consistent training in, all the time. However to run well at the marathon distance you need good consistent training, all the time! And because you are not getting this you are getting down hearted about your training and your ability to run a good marathon, and you don't seem to enjoy training at all. But your training is actually pretty good especially for someone with a job as time consuming as yours.

So, I know the marathon is probably your favourite distance, but would it be worth shelving the marathon (after this one) for a while, train when your able to train without the pressure of the marathon looming over you. Jump into a few short races and get the joy for running and racing back. Recently you seem to be lacking the joy, and without it, training sucks! You can get away with running 5-10k races off half decent training, and even if a race goes wrong, you just shake it off and try again the following week! I'm sure your coach can advise you better than me, but I just had to type this from reading your log recently. Without sounding like a hippy, you need the love back man! Training is sometimes a pain, and can be a grind but you have to enjoy it. We are not elites and we do this for fun, and you seem to be missing the fun!

Lastly just to say, I am totally in awe at your ability to train after really long working days, after jumping off a flight, to train in the middle of crappy cities on awful routes. Lots couldn't do it ( I definitely couldn't) so don't beat yourself up so much. You are doing pretty great for a man with so much on his plate.

Thanks for taking the time to post that PConn, excellent post. Coach was actually trying to get me to concentrate on the shorter stuff this time but I resisted. I suppose I resisted because I'm getting closer to the half century mark and want to go sub 3 before its too late :)

The other thing is I believe I need the structure and discipline and am concerned that if I don't focus on the marathon, I get fat and lazy (and man I'm good at that) and it seems to take me forever to get the base fitness back.

I don't want to come across as whinging coz I've a good job and I'm usually able to deal with the disruption that some travel brings. Two weeks ago I finished up with a solid week and 80 miles and had hoped to build from there but work kicked off again and I've banked 2 poor weeks. Next week will be the worst week work wise and hopefully it'll calm down then.

I know my training hasn't been consistent and that a sub 3 is long gone but I'm still harbouring faint hopes of a sub 3.05.

I love running (just not on a treadmill) it's probably frustration that I'm not able to get the consistency in.

I still believe that if I get an injury free 12 week block that's not continually interrupted by work that I can go sub 3.

Sorry about the rambling reply but the bastids have just cancelled my bank holiday and I'm back in London tomorrow morning!

Again, Tnx for taking time to post.

Your daughter obviously takes after your wife cause she certainly didn't get the 5k speed genes off you. BIG well done to her.

    How'd you go today?

    Not so good B.

Had to push it out from 1 to 2 and then to 5.

Was outside Ecolis gaff all lubed up and ready to go while waiting for a con call to finish. Ended up having to can it, go back to the airport hotel and finish a presentation. Back to London for the week too. It's the final straw, my spirit and motivation are crushed and I'm done.

Spoke to coach and I'm gonna give SS a miss and target Seville in Feb and maybe the Waterford half in December as a short term target.

Thought the decision would be a weight off my shoulders but I'm outta sorts, and feel like crap. That's two cycles I've missed in a row and auld lads like me can't afford that.

I've also a tendency to go backwards quickly if I don't have a target so I need to somehow get back on the horse quickly.

    Pissed off tbh!

As I said earlier that is a mentality we need to get away from still plenty of examples of time improvements at your age. Plenty more cycles (years probably more appropriate) before and sort of talk of decline.

really sorry to hear that C, you're not done yet, no way. Myles is right. Be pissed off for a while then get back up on the horse & come back better.

Sorry to hear that C, as Myles said though there is years left in you yet. It was really taken out of your hands though with work and that's not something you can fully control. Your in good shape just need the whole work thing to calm down a bit.

cycles schmycles, quit your jibber jabber and get real C, you're not exactly dodging coffins yet ya headcase - loads of time to put things right !!

TbL, was chatting to a 51 year old guy in the pub after DCM who'd just ran 3:01. While he was a little pissed he didn't hit sub three on the day he inspired me big time that all's not lost yet for myself!! I think you and me are much the same vintage so there's plenty of time yet!!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,447 ✭✭✭FBOT01

You better get back on that horse quickly as Ferris and I are looking at heading for Waterford. If it happens it will be his come back race and squashing a Lemon on route might appeal to him...be afraid, be very afraid :)

Joking aside, C. Keep things ticking over and regroup for 2016. In the meantime it would be great to catch up with you in Waterford.

+1 - Age is only a number (especially as you get older ;) )

Seriously, age is a state of mind - get your head right about that one & you'll be flying

Of all the wonderful places that you've visited none will be more exotic than Waterford. Horses run free, hyenas roam the plains of ballybeg and 3 types of std's get their name from suburbs of the city.

The half is filling rapidly so if you're considering entering do it before the week is out.....

(My opening paragraph may not be factually accurate)

Am sorry to hear you decided not to go. Completely frustrating to have to ditch another run over work after all the traveling of late. As they've all said you're not dead yet. Definitely aim for the Waterford Half to keep you going.

Jaysus. He's only a garsún. Temporary setback, C, keep the chin up. Waterford is a good one and will be here before you know it.

Looking forward to the remake already with TBL in the lead role....I think that grey tracksuit will work really well on him and that jumping over the benches bit could be a real youtube sensation if it doesn't go quite as planned :D

That's really crappy news TbL but like others, I don't believe for one second you only have a couple more marathon cycles to go. You've got years ahead of you.

as an example: aero2k is just hitting his PB's and he turned 50 last year.

+ wait til you see me this year :)

(if I ever get back running properly)

Bad news re SS TbL. Sorry to hear it. But like the others here have said, you'll get back into it no problem. Resetting the targets will help you I'm sure. Never ran Waterford but by all accounts it's a great race. Might see if I can fit it in meself actually. Might see you there!

You could still come to San Seb for the cider and grub and to mind me...

Good goddesses TbL, I thought you were planning to run it with a zimmerframe. Not even 50??? We're practically peers fgs. Put the skittles away (you want to keep your teeth at your age ;) ) and listen to those who know best. Us.

Last two weeks have been a disaster wth virtually no running (2 short runs in total).

Had entered Waterford after Gavlors sales pitch but am now doubting whether I'll be in any condition to run it.

Work was all consuming and I've been eating like a Lord in very fancy restaurants but every evening I was like a morose cabbage thinking I shoud be out on the road.

Ended up in Stoke for the weekend with my father and young lad for the Stoke Chelsea match so didn't even get out this weekend.

I'm not back in London till Thursday so it's back in the saddle tomorrow and try and put the last few weeks behind me.

Sorry PaulieY but SS is gone by the wayside, don't get a complex between this and Boston, it's not you, it's me and we can still be friends :)

Entered Seville as well to bring some focus to bear!
