Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

For those of you who have kids, I came across a really good idea on the Internet last night.

It's called a Christmas Eve box and you basically start your own tradition with it; fill a box or trunk with new slippers and pyjamas, a Christmas film, hot chocolate and snacks and give it to your little one on Christmas Eve.

It means they get to open a pre-Christmas Day pressie and have a little night in before the big day. Plus if you do it every year it'll be a tradition!

Thought it was a nice idea as I'm sure most of us got pyjamas for Christmas when we were little :)

It's been decided; a christmas movie every day from yesterday to the big day in our house.

We've decided to have a Christmas cocktail party as our housewarming!!! The decorator is coming in next week which means all the rooms will be ready!!! So now my tasks are to make the cocktail menu and the playlist. We're keeping it vintage as that's the style of the house and what we like. So if anyone has suggestions of Christmas songs that would fit flick them my way! That Apple Music subscription will be earning it's keep. I just found a band called "Straight no Chaser" and their Christmas stuff is awesome!!!

I moved in with my other half two years ago.. and i go to mams every year..

so I've never decorated this house.

this year, i don't care if I'm here or not.

    IT WILL BE FAAAAANCY

As we have 8 (and kind of 11) cats, instead of a present each this year, we will be making a hamper with toys, treats, blankets etc. and opening it up (either Christmas Eve or Christmas morning) and sharing it out between them. I'm gathering a few bits and bobs each week. Here is week one:

oh..... my... god...... has anyone been in the Arnotts Christmas shop!??? :D:D
Seen the window display on Henry Street this morning and felt like a giddy 4 year old again! :D I must say their stuff is fabulous - I much prefer their stuff to BT now - I noticed their stuff is kind of similar, but 10 times nicer & cheaper! :D I would have taken a picture, but I was distracted by the sparkles and glitter! [typical woman!!].

Anyone in Portlaoise or the surrounding area, Baker & Cook, formerly Gings hardware, have a Christmas shop at the moment.
You can see snaps of it on Snapchat if you follow kellyloucakes, she runs a cafe within the store also.

OMG Brown Thomas have a load of greenery around their windows in the Cork branch with loads of lights stuck into it - I'd say it's going to be all white lights around the windows!! I think it's normally the 1st November they unveil their windows so I'd imagine the lights are on now!! :D

Broke is the word for it! I've just had a browse through the Christmas decorations in Woodies. The prices are mad. €3.99 for a solitary glass bauble, and they're not even THAT nice. Artificial medium length swags with a bit of decoration for €59.95. (You can buy a proper 6ft artificial large tree for twice that for Gods sake!
    =-O :O ).
I was going to stock up on a few new bits but not at those prices.
Ok I'm putting the Grinch back in the box and not going into another shop like that again for fear of upsetting myself.

Fear not Al, not all shops are shockingly overpriced like Woodies. I was in there last night and I have to walk out in disgust at the over inflated prices they had for their Christmas stock.

Home Store next door had better stuff for half the price. Shop around there are good bargains to be found.

Woodies are ridiculously over priced. I get some lovely bits in there but only when they are on sale or clearance. I spent 2 years looking for a gorgeous pre lit wreath for my front door, think from their Washington range. I finally got in the sale last year at a third of the price. I love it but would not have paid the full price for it !

Anybody have recommendations for where to go for Christmas markets?
I wanted to go to Prague but its costly!

My parents' present to my husband isn't available near them so I bought it today. I'm out now and I've just realised that I left it in the exact spot where he puts his bag when he gets home from work. Oopsies.

    I've been to:

    Germany (Frankfurt, Berlin, Cologne)
    Poland (Krakow)
    England (Birmingham and Cornwall)

and I'd rank them this way:

    1) Cologne (With a bullet, no comparison)
    2) Krakow (First ones I went to, lovely a cold, but not a huge diversity)
    3) Cornwall (Surprisingly awesome, we did a whole roadtrip thing and ended up in these tiny villages for local parades and markets. Very odd but brilliant)
    4) Berlin (Markets weren't amazing but the city is just so cool!)
    5) Frankfurt (Everything about Frankfurt, to me, is meh. Meh markets, meh atmosphere, just meh)
    6) Birmingham (although it is HUGE it was a bit dull. Birmingham isn't exactly exciting outside of it so that won't have helped...)

My GF has also been to the markets in Vienna and she said they're amazing, but even she would admit that Cologne was something else.

OK, thats that Halloween nonsense out of the way, let Christmas begin!!!! ha ha

But I love Halloween. I miss it already. On the plus side, I decided to have a listen to christmasfm while I was browsing the other morning and lo-and-behold they have a classical christmasfm channel too. Who knew??? It's bloody good too. I love all the choral music. Such an atmospheric version of the normal christmasfm. Really loved it. My wife came in and 'caught' me listening to it this afternoon and asked me if it wasn't a bit soon for that? I felt like I'd been caught on a porn site.

    Great station anyway.

Oh sorry, I was listening to it online via their website. Don't know if it's broadcast on the actual radio anywhere.

You can always listen to christmas fm via the app, or website. They just stream christmas music. But they only have a licence to broadcast live shows for a month every year. Only a few more weeks left.

If you listen to Christmas FM you're bound to have heard them before. The station frequently plays their 'Twelve days of Christmas' and 'The Christmas can-can' which are brilliant. :D

I don't listen to radio. Pretty much ever so I hadn't heard hem before.

Tonight I got stuck into making some of my pressies. Vanilla sugar, vanilla rum, orange rum, and orange and cinnamon whiskey. Let them infuse now for a few weeks and voila! :)

  • Moderators, Recreation & Hobbies Moderators Posts: 27,653 Mod ✭✭✭✭Posy

Me neither! Until I worked in an office with a radio playing I never listened to one. Background noise drives me up the wall.
But Christmas FM has always been the exception!! :)

Oh wow- I can practically smell your post. :D

Im holding off throwing on the Christmas FM app until I get back from a trip abroad near the end of Dec, I know I will probably not make it that long.

We had some chores last night and were going to go to bed but it was too early, pre 9, so I just threw on the tv and a film called the Family Man was on it. I hate Nicholas Cage but it was a Christmas movie!!

Your day will come! I am currently lying in bed streaming Christmas music and waiting for my friend to text that she's on the way, when she does I'll spring from my horizontal position and race around like a blue-arse fly and be ready when she gets here. Road Trip!

I have also pre-loaded Christmas tunes on my mp3 player so it'll liven up our drive to Dublin :)

Came down with horrible fluey thing overnight and just want to lie in bed but can't as kitchen needs walls prepped for painting and papering ahead of S's birthday party on Sunday. Got up and made my very needed coffee and took a mouthful to realise the milk had curdled. Bleurgh!! Had breakfast with orange juice while headache worsened. Got S to agree to come to the shops with me without protest (he's easy to upset since his leg broke and his last two teeth started coming in) halfway to the shops I realise it's because he thinks we are going to Toy'r'us rather than Aldi. Get to Aldi where major building works are happening and some sort of mongrel son of a giant crane crossed with a jack hammer is smashing up the car park. In Aldi everyone is moving like molasses at the checkout while S lobbies hard to go to Toys'r'us next. Finally got out of there, raced up hill home, S started crying when he saw the house. Thankfully he got over it as soon as I let him out of the buggy and now I am sitting down with what I've decided will be the first of 3 cups of coffee and the lovely box of Christmas Florentines that are finally back in Aldi. Let the Christmas gorge-athon start here!

Yesterday I was in a shop as I had to get stationery for a course I'm doing. While browsing I saw they had their Christmas cards in and I ended up buying most of my Christmas cards then and there. All are lovely and have some beautiful artwork and words on them. So yeah I've started my Christmas shopping. :):D

I just danced around the house to Boney M's Mary's Boy Child. Great song to practice my sexy dad dancing to.
