    Monday – Easy

Up and out early this morning to get this done ahead of a physio appointment in the evening. Poor BG Jr. was landed in crèche before she knew what was going on. But I got my run done :D. Not enough time for hill sprints though, so I did strides instead. Will tag the hills on to a run later in the week.
    • 6 miles @ 9:02 incl. strides (grass)

Physio did my quads mainly and my right QL and glute/hip. Was made promise to continue doing the prescribed 5-a-day or I’ll be in serious trouble with my back which is just being held together by Pilates. It’s more or less 3 years to the day since my slipped disc happened and I do not want to go back there under any circumstances so I’ll be doing these exercises for life I suspect. Problem is it’s easy to do them when you’re in pain, or having twinges, but another thing all together to remember them when you’re feeling great.

    Tuesday – REST

Busy, busy day including work, a trip to the dentist, more work, all on a total of about 4 hours sleep. Early night tonight. .

    Wednesday – S&C, Medium Run with intervals @ 1500m – 3K pace

    Pilates was good.

Rant: Invisible, extendable dog leads, attached to a jet black dog on one end and a blissfully unaware owner on the other. At least 30 foot apart across a barely lit grass track. That is all.

    Me 1, Dogs 2
    • 8 miles @ 8:45 incl. 8 x 30 secs @ 1500 - 3K pace (grass)
    Paces (5:56, 6:00, 5:59, 6:24, 6:02, 6:25, 5:57, 6:25)

    Thursday – Medium Run

Up to the end of the pier and back. Pitch black in parts so had to slow down a bit but a lovely night for a run.
    • 8 miles @ 8:39 (grass, path)

Friday – S&C, LSR with last 20 mins moderate pace

I’ve had to frontload the week somewhat with a busy weekend ahead so did my LSR+ this morning after Pilates in St.Anne’s around the trails and paths of the inside perimeter. 2 loops at easy pace then 20 mins of a shortened loop with half a mile to cool down. Pace for the moderate section much slower than last week but the effort was similar so I’m putting it down to the terrain and the patchy GPS in St. Anne’s compared to the Phoenix Park. Felt good on this.

Those fcekin extendable leads are a curse - messed up one of my reps in an interval session this spring because of taking a detour to avoid bring tripped :(.

The training seems to be continuing well. Looking forward to see your goals for 2016.

I was nearly taken out by an extendable lead on Wednesday nights run too. I just saw it with enough time to take evasive action .

Let's start bringing scissors on our runs *snip* :D:D
Nice week's training missus. I hear you about the regular stuff. Had a chat with my physio Thursday, he let me off the hook a little but my niggles are different to yours. He didn't really do me a favour though by giving me a little slack  cos I'll probably take it, and some....

They really are! I was in the middle of the first rep and stopped just in time but slipped and landed on my a$$ as a result . Had to start the session again after I'd recovered. Grrrrr. All good apart from that, have a few tentative goals for 2016 but nothing concrete yet.

You have quicker reflexes that me! I wonder was it the same dog . I'll need night vision goggles on my runs at this rate.

Oh, they should never ever let us off the hook or cut us any slack. I need 'the fear' to keep doing them

Id say you wew moving quicker than i was . It could have been the same dog . Mine was on the promenade between clontarf and the wooden bridge around 7 o clock it was a small black and white fella with a young girl holding him.

There was a running club just up from the bridge with a course marked out and they looked to be racing around it in groups.

I'd say I was out about an hour after you. Different dog (the offender in my case was jet black so perfectly camouflaged for night time tripping )

I like DG's scissors idea

have to agree those leads are dreadful, even for me walking woody its a total pain to see dogs on them and completely out of the owners control. Did you say anything to the owner? Not a bad idea to make them aware when something like that happens, they might reconsider when they realise the consequences (they might not of course but you never know...)

    + 1 for the scissors :D

I sure did! I said lots of things! If I see them out again I expect they will have fairy lights on the lead and the dog will be wearing a Hi Viz

Saturday – Easy + Hill Sprints

Late enough getting out for this after a busy morning / afternoon. Up to the Wooden Bridge and back around the long way so I could include some hill sprints.
    • 6.2 miles @ 8:44 (grass, path) + 6* x 8 sec hill sprints

*Discovered when I got home it should have been 7 . I’ll never get that PB now .

    Sunday - S&C, Easy

Spent the morning at this Introductory Workshop in Wicklow. Really interesting, especially on the nutrition side of things. The movement drills made me realise just how much mobility I don’t have :o. Lots and lots to work on and plenty to think about.

Stopped off at Djouce Woods on the way home and did a loop on the trails. The body was already feeling the consequences of the various drills (jumps, squats, assault course type movements) and this run was very much a slog which is a shame as it’s one of my favourite routes and I rarely get the opportunity to do it.

I would, definitely. Of course I need to put everything into practice now and do the 'homework' to really get the benefit. My legs especially are in a heap today after the drills, talk about a shock to the system

    Thursday – REST

    Travelling.

    Friday – REST

    Just too busy.

    Saturday – Cross Damn Fun!

Signed up for this when booking a long weekend trip to Berlin as my training plan called for a 5K race. Couldn’t find a road race anywhere, oh no that would have been too easy, so entered a 4.5K race as part of a 2 day cross country festival (aquinn would just love it, 2 whole days!) and got the following cheery email earlier in the week:

“In a few days time has come !! Cross Days! #You too? Endurance, strength and coordination you need at the 52nd edition of the Cross Country run. The motto is:. Pure nature experiences. Learn to Cross Country”

    How could I resist?

Got to the shuttle bus pick up point ridiculously early, even for me, and enjoyed a half hour trip through stunning countryside. Had plenty of time to pick up my chip, number etc. and marvel at the set up: mobile food courts, seamless registration, a stage with live music, open fires, changing tents, outdoor showers, more portaloos per capita than you’d ever see here…. I was such a tourist taking photos of everything. This was Cross Country - German style.

It wasn’t really possible to recce or warm up on the course because of other (kids) races going on so I jogged around the main set up area and car park trying to catch a glimpse over the sand dunes at the start/finish area. The course seemed to be man-made from what I could see, predominantly out of sand.

It was sunny, blue skies and about 15 degrees, so I’d opted for shorts and a singlet, but the majority seemed to be dressed in long sleeves and leggings, some with hats and gloves. Couldn’t help wondering if they knew something I didn’t. Oh well, too late to worry now. There were 2 races starting together: a one lap 4.5K and a 2 lap 9K and it was all very polite and civilised at the start. The countdown backwards from 10 commenced and we were off. Into the unknown. After 2 minutes of running through ankle deep sand and climbing vertical dunes I was questioning my sanity and after 5 minutes I was thinking thanks be to jeebus I didn’t enter the 9K. The first Km was so tough but then the course levelled out and it changed from sand to trail through a forest along mucky tracks made by 4x4s or some sort of off-road vehicles. I think the area is normally used for scrambling.

I’d settled into a pace by this point and had overtaken one or two girls. I knew there were plenty ahead of me and I couldn’t move any faster than I was already going so the plan at this stage was not to let anyone else overtake me and to enjoy the bizarreness of it all. There were wonderful marshals at every corner telling us what “schnelle Läufer” we were. I was working hard but loving every minute of this. In true German style the course was marked and measured to perfection with Km signs. At around 4Km the terrain reverted to sand again and the going got tougher. Only 500m to go, I could hear the noise from the finish area and finally the finish straight came into view and it was all over. Felt bad for the poor sods who had to continue on for a second lap. I was watching the finishers from the 9K race when a girl came up and asked me had I come first in the 4.5K. Eh, no, I doubt that very much. She said she had been told she was third and said I was ahead of her so might be up for a prize. LOL!

Sure enough, a few minutes later, the band (who were playing Whiskey in the Jar) were evicted from the stage which turned into a podium and my name was called. I’ve yet to see the official photos but I really hope they captured the look of bewilderment on our faces as 1st, 2nd and 3rd place were awarded our prizes

I’m still laughing. What an awesome experience. Cross Damn Fun – they weren’t kidding.

Bravo on the win but for shame on the Germans, richest country in the EU and that's all they could give as a first prize. Like getting a potato for winning a race in Ireland. Apols about the rant, but your efforts deserved much more.

Thanks Tang! In fairness to them they didn't skimp on any other aspect of the race and the entry fee was very reasonable. I couldn't hang around to see what the 2 lap guys and girls (the REAL winners ;)) got as prizes so they may have got the bling, but to be honest I was only sorry I couldn't bring my prize home on the plane :D

    Monday – Easy

Spent a good part of the morning in the Phoenix Park cheering and trying to keep up with all the DCM tracker related texting and WhatsApping. All very exciting. Made me fix on 2016 as the year to try to bury my marathon demons once and for all. Fingers crossed I can make it to the start line in one piece. I’ll need to pick the training programme very carefully I think, and make sure to factor in plenty of time for strength and conditioning.

Was able to get a medium run done today thanks to the Bank Holiday to free up some time later in the week. It was a bit too fast perhaps, but very enjoyable. Up to St.Anne’s for a loop around the inside then back home.

Couldn’t get a pass for McGrattan’s unfortunately, seemed like a great afternoon/evening was had by all. Hopefully there’ll be a bar stool with my name on it next year :D.

    Tuesday – Easy

This was a spectacular FAIL. Was going to go to the club session as I had the evening off for once but realised it was going to be a time trial so didn’t bother. Felt a bit weary anyway so decided to go for an easy run rather than the session on the schedule. Felt drained and each mile was spectacularly slower than the last. All down to fuelling issues so won’t be making that mistake again in a hurry .
    • 6 miles @ 9:26 (grass, path)

    Wednesday – S&C, Intervals

Good Pilates class, apart from some cramping in my right foot and lower leg, which fortunately disappeared quickly enough. Instructor gave me some exercises to do to help build up my glutes which are causing me some bother with my hip and may be causing the cramping. Bad enough I have flabby abs syndrome, now I’ve flabby ass syndrome to contend with too .

The plan called for 12 x 400s @ 3K pace but it’s an advanced plan and I figured 8 would be plenty for me. So I estimated 1:39 per 400m to be about right pace wise and headed to my 400m grass stretch along the promenade. It was pitch dark, wet and windy and a bit soggy underfoot so I’m delighted with the splits. Recovery was 200m jog between reps. One advantage of the weather was very few dog walkers out so no canine incident reports to file this week.

    400m Splits: 1:36, 1:36, 1:37, 1:38, 1:35, 1:38, 1:36, 1:39
