Annoying/sticking Gears

I'm hoping someone can help me with solutions to my really annoying gears.

I have a Giant Escape, 2011, cycle to work every day, 15km round trip. My gears have a tendency to "stick". So, if I am in 5th gear for example and want to drop to 4th, they click as if they are trying to do what I ask but are stuck between gears. Only when I go down to 3rd will they move and then they go to 3rd, not just stay in 4th. Also happens if going up too but is quite annoying when it happens going up to top gear and it just won't do it.

My bike was serviced in August, new gear cable, cogs nicely cleaned and gears tuned up. It was happening a lot before the service but it is starting to happen again now.

Any suggestions as to a fix? The simpler and more helpful the better... I'm not planning on getting a new bike any time soon...

Google - gear indexing. This will show you how easily.

Eh, have the cassette and/or chain and/or rest of bike been cleaned since then? If not that might be a factor.....

It sounds like the cable has lost tension. This can be fairly typical for a new cable. It's fairly simple to resolve this. There's a barrel adjuster on the rear mech where the outer cable enters. Small adjustments are all that's needed. Plenty of videos on YouTube for this.

Failing that, going by your daily commute, the bike does have a fair amount of mileage on it. How much of the drivetrain has been replaced so far ? I.e chain , cassette and chain rings. They do wear and will cause shifting to be less crisp.
