You can use them as a handy contacts list.

Just cross off all the people you don't know.

Well I think it's stupid for them to be printed out despite being available in a digital format.

There's a golden pages website but nobody ever uses it because why the fúck would you google "golden pages" and then search for the number you want when you could just google whatever you're looking for.

One year back in the early noughties they produced a cd-rom for each area and delivered it with the directories, they were very excited about it, but then they found out there was a flaw or something that allowed people to use it as a reverse directory and get your name and address from your phone number. Apparently this was a terrible cock-up even though reverse directories seem to be a commonplace thing in the U.S.

It seems to get smaller and smaller each year. By 2020 it'll just be a flyer

It was getting bigger every year and they were concerned about how they would manage this until someone found a way to make paper that was significantly thinner and yet strong enough to withstand the kind of handling a phone directory used to get (people flipping quickly through pages and so on). They were mad excited about that too.

I used to work there and the management and all the older people in the company acted like the Golden Pages and the phone book would never be obsolete, while those of us who were under 30 already googled for any phone numbers or addresses we might need. True, that was in the days before smartphones and most Irish companies didn't have proper websites, but you could see where things were going.
