I'm sure it all boils down to certain programming rights that have been bought specifically for Ireland by TV3 that ITV carry in the UK. There is a fistful of them.

ITV 2,3&4 are not encrypted and can't be blocked to us viewers here in Ireland.
ITV 2,3 and 4 HD now showing this programme is not available message for anyone with a Sky HD sub. I can't see the sd variants been added to the irish epg in the immediate future now that the HD ones have been blocked.

Was just reading this on DS... Very strange, hardly a coincidence - ITV must have instructed sky to place the encryption on the channels to us in Ireland. Strange!

Most likely wishful thinking on my part but I wonder have ITV decided to broker a deal with Sky to add these to the irish epg after the sale of UTVI is cpmplete. As I say most limely a pipe dream on my behalf.

That wouldn't really make sense either as keeping the channels open is doing no harm either and the SD FTA channels are open anyway ... Sky isn't gaining or loosing anything either as the could only be opened with a HD sub...

Maybe it's just pure coincidence and sky were doing a bit of cleaning up with encryption but it does seem very strange one day after the ITV deal was made public.

I can't ever see us getting those channels added to our EPG. I use a third party receiver and my card so it doesn't effect me anyway.

More than likely pure coincidence- was always anamolous that a channel would not be available on the Irish EPG but with a subscription.

But the strange thing is utvhd, stvhd, itvhd are still free to air. Is itv and sky Ireland planing to launch them onto the Irish epg?

But strangle enough i can tune itv 1,2,3,4 & itv be, sd channels. But the HD are encrypted.

Not really, ITV HD is on Freesat and will stay there I'd say for the long-term.

I doubt they will do anything until at least the official approval of the takeover is given, which could be after Christmas.

Just reading on DS (others can confirm as im at work) but apparently Channel 5 HD is still clearing with a HD sub so that would clearly indicate that this has been done intentionally by either sky or ITV because if they were doing a general clean up C5 would have been spotted too.

It hasn't been clearing via the old encryption if that's what you mean like ITV2,3,4 HD is now?

As in with a HD sub.. Has C5HD got "this programme is not available" too?

Channel 5 HD still clear, its only the ITV's that are gone. Which makes me think this is a direct instruction from ITV rather than Sky.

Ch 5 HD is still available to view with a hd subscription. Itv 2,3,4 HD all say this programme is not available. What is going on. This has to have come from itv. If it was sky ch 5 hd would be unavailable in hd also. Too much of a coincidence

I'd agree, it's almost certainly come from ITV.. If there was a general clean up of encryption HD categories then C5 would have been spotted too.

It's all very strange because the SD channels are available anyway FTA so we are not gaining any actual content with HD.

Perhaps they are getting their house in order to clear the regulatory hurdles i.e TV3 claiming that they have irish rights to some programming that ITV234HD so had to make the formal change?

Are any of the rights to shows on ITV2/3/4 sold to other ROI broadcasters? Maybe TV3? Could they have complained?

Wouldn't make a difference because ITV 2,3,4 are FTA on satellite in SD anyway so unless ITV are planning to go behind the paywall in the UK there will always be overspill into Ire/France etc.

The channels are not currently available on the sky EPG in any form in Ireland so technically they don't broadcast to Irish viewers on sky in Ireland - "Other Channels" is a receiver design nothing to do with ITV.

My hopes of C5 HD gone back to the old encryption like ITV HD2,3,4 seem dashed then

ITV clearly now have their eyes on Ireland since yesterdays buyout of UTV, I dont think it's merely a coincidence that the channels get blocked today of all days when they could have been blocked any stage over the past year.

To me it reads 2 ways, either ITV do not want their HD channels here as its not part of our subscriptions and are not entitled to have those channels or they are planning a launch of ITV 2-4 over the next few months with Irish ads and the odd programe block for Irish viewers but in the meantime block our viewing for ITV2-4 until they set this up.

I was thinking we're tv3 involved also as they show some programmes but itv 2,3,4 sd are still available to view and if anything,it was was more difficult to watch the hd versions as they could only be viewed with hd subscription. However all itv's sd versions are fta where as even in the uk if I'm correct u needed a hd subscription to view the hd versions of itv 2,3,4 etc on sky as they were not fta on a sky box due to a deal with sky.

I think if it was TV3 they would have had ITV2-4 in HD blocked ages ago.

Yes I do, have an English Card because I've lived there. Thought maybe without a HD sub C5 HD would open. Way off the mark though lol

channel5 and its other channels are terrible

a uk sky card is out of date as a freesat freetime receiver is better

If C5 start uplinking C5HD themselves using their own tp (which is possible now since they closed the region's) then it will be available again on non sky receivers as sky won't enable the card pairing for any non sky uplinked HD ch. like rte2, the itv's...

Look, we've gone a bit off track here. There's a thread in satellite discussing ITV2/3/4 and I think that's the place for this discussion to be had.

a thread it will do that. A discussion on how itv will access the Irish market is going to take place, it's other channels will be part of that. Channel 5 is slightly of topic a much of it speculation.

    back on topic

more likely to happen a tv3/utvi merger

http://m.broadcastnow.co.uk/5095771.articleITV eyes assault on Irish market
    22 October, 2015 | By Matthew Campelli
ITV’s acquisition of UTV Television could open the door for the broadcaster to launch a major assault on the Irish TV market.

ITV snapped up the television division of the Northern Irish broadcaster for £100m this week, with the deal poised to be ratified by UTV’s shareholders and competition authorities.
UTV Ireland, the recently launched Republic of Ireland service, formed part of the deal and it is understood that ITV will attempt to strengthen the channel’s position in the market.
One source familiar with the Irish broadcasting market even suggested that ITV could line up a merger of UTV Ireland and fellow commercial terrestrial broadcaster TV3.
UTV Ireland launched in January 2015 with a raft of ITV Studios programmes, including Coronation Street and Emmerdale. It suffered a loss of £7.5m in its first six months after its 11.4% share of commercial impacts did not reach the expected 15% mark.
TV3 is owned by ITV shareholder Liberty Global and holds the Irish rights to entertainment juggernauts The X Factor and Britain’s Got Talent.
“Liberty has skin in both sides of the game,” said the source. “A lot of people don’t think there’s enough room for both UTV Ireland and TV3. The game may be to buy TV3 and merge the two.”
Liberum analyst Ian Whittaker added that a merger “could definitely be a possibility” and was unlikely to face opposition from regulators in a market dominated by the state-owned RTÉ. He added that the Irish angle could renew speculation around Liberty buying ITV.
Philip McGovern, managing director of Big Mountain, the Northern Irish indie behind ITV’s Wild Ireland, said the UTV acquisition could be good news for local indies.
He explained that UTV currently “makes most of its content in-house”, while external commissions “were made on incredibly challenging tariffs” or topped up through third-party funding.
But Wild Rover managing director Philip Morrow said he did not believe that ITV’s presence would “materially affect” UTV’s current commissioning strategy. “In general, ITV has been less focused on commissioning content from Northern Ireland than the BBC and Channel 4,” he added.
Whittaker also doubted that the move would result in a higher investment in local production, and said ITV would “potentially be looking at greater efficiencies”.
ITV is not expected to make significant changes to the local UTV management team and structure, while union Bectu has been in touch to discuss potential changes following the announcement.
