So in the next week or two I will be interviewed for an internal position in my company (if successful it means I would get a step or two up the ladder).

I don't know if it will be a telephone interview or in person (I work remotely) but I'm just wondering if it is in person should I wear a suit or what I normally wear which is jeans and a tucked in shirt.

Always show that you made an effort; it's about showing the person interviewing you that you're taking it seriously even if it's not "needed".

It's always better to overdress for an interview than underdress!

Yes, even if it's internal, wear a suit. I did this process last year. Workplace was ultra casual, people in shorts and sandals during the summer, but I did all my internal interviews in a suit. People were surprised but it was well received.
