Great programme, shame none of my favourite labels got a mention though. Cooking vinyl, go discs and Sarah Records.

The KLF, what a pair of nutters. They deleted all their records when they retired and they're still unavailable today.

I remember a Radio Ad for one of their Greatest Hits CDs which went something like

"If The Only One I Know is the only one you know, you should get Melting Pot - The Best of The Charlatans". Quite clever.

Maybe Bez will be adopted as Chief of that tribe, he received a solid 703 votes in Salford & Eccles at the last Election

Just watched part two of 'The Story Of Indie' - always good to see Half Man Half Biscuit on BBC Four :D

We really need more Tony Wilsons in this world.

Great programme, shame none of my favourite labels got a mention though. Cooking vinyl, go discs and Sarah Records.

One of my favourite books, and one that I cannot recommend highly enough, is this by David Cavanagh...

Focuses on Creation mostly, but also an excellent insight into other indie labels during the 80's :)

Very enjoyable series, I just wish it was a bit longer. They are rushing from label to label too quickly.

Tony Wilson was some man, establishing Manchester as the beating heart of Indie Music in England while doing his day job as News Presenter on Granada.

It would be like Bryan Dobson running a network of underground raves across the country. Which, to the best of my knowledge, I don't think he does.

Richard Hawley great on Jools Holland on Friday night and a duet with Sir Tom Jones!

I'd totally reccomend "Rip It Up and start Again" , excellent book about post punk, really well written and doesn't cover just the usual suspects:

Looking forward to part three of the Indie documentary...no doubt, it will focus on Britpop and how 'indie' became the mainstream.

I loved how the Indie Charts in the NME had (What's the Story) Morning Glory at Number One almost every week ... two years after it was released.

Who was waiting two years to buy it? were they saving up 10p a week from their pocket money or something? :)

Or whenever Steps released a single, it would go straight to number one, as they were signed to a indie label :D

    Tragedy!

Hi, The Story of Indie winds up with a burst through Britpop and there's a few slightly related compilations to enjoy. And TFI is back, back, back!

    Friday

9pm & 1am The Joy Of The Single
Documentary taking a journey through the decades to celebrate cherished stories and memories associated with the music single. Artists including Jack White, Noddy Holder, Richard Hawley and Suzi Quatro reveal the powerful impact that singles have had on successive generations, from the rock 'n' rollers of the 1950s to the MP3 downloaders of today

10pm & 2am Music for Misfits: The Story of Indie
Part 3 The 1990s saw the original independent labels struggle in the wake of acid house, allowing the major labels to move in with Britpop, spearheaded by Blur and Oasis. Bands with an old indie ethos switched to the majors, which though conservative in nature were commercially astute. By the mid-point of the decade, the spirit of the DIY boom had all but gone. However, a recent renaissance has seen the return of some independent labels, who seem to have learned from the mistakes of the past. Narrated by Mark Radcliffe. Last in the series

    11pm & 3am Britpop at the BBC
A look at the vibrant form of indie music known as Britpop, which 20 years ago stamped its presence onto the UK cultural scene and led to the notion of `Cool Britannia', as a new wave of bands re-evaluated what it meant to be British. The movement was dominated by the battle between its biggest-selling exponents, Blur and Oasis, who in August 1995 did battle in a memorable bid for the number one spot. The programme also features the bands Elastica, Sleeper, Suede and Menswear

Midnight Guitar Heroes at the BBC
Archive footage of guitarists taken from BBC music shows of the 1970s. Includes electric performances by Carlos Santana, Mark Knopfler, Peter Green and the Edge, and acoustic material by John Martyn, John Renbourn, Bert Jansch and Paco Pena

8pm TFI Friday (Channel 4) New! (Sort of)
Chris Evans follows up his one-off edition aired in June, with the first of a brand new series of the lively entertainment show mixing music and chat with stunts and skits, featuring U2, Take That, Steve Coogan, Slaves and Saoirse Ronan in its opening line-up.

    11.35pm Later with Jools Holland
Extended edition of the music programme. The host chats to songwriter Burt Bacharach, whose extensive songbook has been reinterpreted into the hit musical Close to You. Soul singer John Newman presents tracks from his second album Revolve, including his latest track with American R'n'B singer Charlie Wilson. Plus, poet Labi Siffre performs again after a 16-year break and there are appearances by post-punk hip-hop duo Sleaford Mods, Manchester-based four-piece Everything Everything, jazz and rhythm 'n' blues singer-songwriter Lizz Wright and Dublin folk quartet Lynched

    Saturday

10.55pm The Joy of The Single
    as yesterday

11.55pm Music for Misfits: The Story of Indie
    as yesterday

    12.55am Britpop at the BBC
    scrambled eggs ...

1.55am Guitar Heroes at the BBC
oh my baby how I love your legs ...

    11pm TFI Friday
not as much as I love scrambled eggs ...

7pm Neil Diamond: One Night Only (UTV Ireland)
The legendary crooner takes centre stage at the London Palladium for a one-off TV special featuring some of his greatest hits alongside tracks from his latest album Melody Road. The show's host Rob Brydon tells the story of how his musical hero rose from humble beginnings to become one of the world's most influential and best-loved chart stars. Cameras follow the pair on a journey to Brooklyn, where they visit Coney Island, Brighton Beach, Flatbush and the New York singer's childhood home, as well as the famous Bitter End club in Greenwich Village

Elsewhere, Sky Arts has four hours of Deep Purple on Saturday Night, with a bit of Black Sabbath to finish.

Film Four has Nowhere Boy (The John Lennon Story) on Sunday Night at 1.10am No real Beatles songs, but they do have a bash at 'In Spite Of All The Danger', the only song ever written by McCartney and Harrison

    That's about it, slán.

There's a girl in my local still convinced that Neil Diamond did not and could not have ever written Red Red Wine. I doubt he cares one way or the other as he whistles something catchy on the way to the bank.
