Can you claim for medical expenses in the year of occurence? say in a tax return in Nov 2015 for 2014 as Self Employed, or would one have to wait until Nov 2016 to claim for those expenses in 2015?

There's nothing to stop you filing a 2015 tax return in January or February 2016 - you don't have to wait until November.

If you don't have PAYE income then you're not in a position to make a Med1 claim early.

Yes I understand that a return doesn't have to be done in November but........

Thanks, so in this case one needs to wait until Nov 2016 for medical expenses paid out in Oct 2015?

No, you don;t have to wait until November.

You can claim immediately in January.

In extreme cases of hardship, you can claim the tax credits in the current year too
