Hi all,

This seems the best location for this. I got a leaflet through the door about An Post DeliveryBox. Cant find anything additional on their website about it, anyone know anything about it?

Basically anything that won't fit into the box gets a failed delivery slip and stays in the depot for collection!

Anything that fits into the box is considered to be delivered and will not be covered by any insurance if stolen from the box.

Aye. We are looking at replacing windows and doors, and were going with a door option minus a letter box. I was going to get a standard external letter box, however for only €30 more I could have this, which is likely better quality and more secure. Also, the ability to take packages makes it far more attractive. Doesnt seem to be rolled out in Dublin anyway based on the info posted above.

Have you read about how it works before posting?

Its a LOCKED box with 2 security keys.

Is only anpost staff allowed use it.

An Post will certainly have master keys, however I imagine each house will have bespoke keys.

FFS - houses are locked using keys and many cars. I don't see many for sale!

If a parcel arrives you get notification via taxt so YOU know exactly when its there - I suppose youi could have a virus on your phone that will send the text to others and that one of those just happen to have a replica key and they'll rush to you letterbox and steal your parcel.

Yopu've a better chance of winning the lotto without buying a ticket!

Registered post will still need signature so that will render the box useless for most large deliveries bar Amazon.
They also state that they can discontinue the service at any time.
If you move house, you cannot take it with you. It has to remain at original registered address.
The only real advantage of it is that it's your own private post box saving you a trip anytime you need to post a letter. I reckon that reason will attract a lot of business users.

The link in the OP seems to say that signatures will no longer be required.

Barcode only works with certain An Post services, any service with a requirement for a signature still needs to be signed for.

The box is bolted to your wall with a few light rawl bolts then there is one locking mechanism and the householder gets two keys while the postman has a master key to put parcels inside.

There is a unique barcode on each box which acts in lieu of the householders signature! Basically once it goes into the box it is delivered and signed for! It is only registered post that must get a physical signature.

These boxes are open to abuse by all manner of vandals and criminals in different areas and anything stolen from them will not be covered by any insurance, not even your home insurance as you have left the items outside!

have you got one and actually seen how it is attached to the wall? - No, I don't think so and again assuming there are marauding gangs hanging about just in case they get a code, spare key or rip from the wall in the hope they get a pair of shoes???????

Christ, that's some train of thought - but sure lets only ever look at the negatives, that what some of us are famous for.

Its a feckin box with a lock, securely attached to the wall. It is totally OPTIONAL. Its your CHOICE whether to get it or not. For many it will be very handy, for others, it won't suit.

The CHOICE is entirely yours.

You have to attach it yourself, An Post will only deliver it to you.

EVERY system is open to some sort of abuse, nobody is forcing anybody to get one of these boxes. If you are so concerned about it then simply don't get one.

They are just trialing it at present in selected areas (kildare being one), so no huge marketing push yet.

We did exactly what you're planning. Replaced the ancient front door and deliberately chose not to have a letter box. We got a bog standard post box in Woodies which is okay for 90% of things - attached it to the wall with big rawl plugs. This looks like a better box because it could take bigger envelopes and some parcels. Our box has difficultly even with a fairy small book or something. Hmmm. Think we'll look into switching if it arrives in Dublin.

For those worried about security, we've had no problems with our post box and I suspect you could open it with a half-decent punch. Or just lift the flap and help yerself to the ol' bills.

Three years running at Halloween our post box and most of those up our road were attacked with bangers (at about 2am so hardly trick or treat).

After the third time it blew the bottom out of our box which was an old An Post plastic one. The cast aluminium ones didn't fair as well and some were in bits.

Answer was to put the new box where it can't be seen from the road.

EDIT> Checked with postman today and seems I imagined the arming feature below as he knew nothing about it although he did mention the boxes to me a while back

btw I suspect as I can see two locks on the "Deliverybox" that it has an "arming" feature, so the postmans key only works after its been opened and closed with the householders key. This would prevent another person opening it with the master key after the postman. Really not sure about that but I remember our postman talking about a new box that had some feature like that.

Little shíts!! That was supposed to be funny? Kids round our way messed with bangers in the wheelie bins one Hallowe'en but they got caught doing it, so that was the end of that. Deliberately blowing up post boxes is something else. :mad: Think I might tape our box up this year in case post box destruction has become a thing.

(Actually, the wheelie bin massacre was quite funny. They'd done three bins but didn't get a big enough reaction so they lit lots of bangers and were about to target another neighbour's bin. But, at that exact moment, one of their Dad's came out of the house. In a panic, they dumped the evidence into their own bin and cracked it. Cue much roaring and shouting and all the noise alerted everyone to what happened. Lesson learned.)

Leaflet came into office today, so here's an image of the box and its main points.

It does not have an accessible opening which means that your bills cannot be taken

but neither can your granny's birthday card with €50 in it.

(also means not suitable for bangers).

Looks like it can be opened with either a master key which An Post will have, or the individual key that the householder has. (2 provided)

Delivery person scans barcode and this sends message to you that you have post.

Also handy if you are away for a few days as the post cannot be seen.

But best of all - if you have one of these you can block your letter box and means you won't get any junk mail except the stuff that comes via an post

Other points - you have to activate the box before deliveries commence, you can de-activate it at any time. If you lose both your keys, you can apply for replacement keys and box is deactivated during this period. It has an indemnity limit of €500. Its available for both business and domestic delivery.

I know you are only suspecting here, but I wonder if this was the case how would the box work when away on holidays for example?

Parcel hotel sounds like a lot less hassle to be honest. Unless you're buying off the internet on a weekly basis I can't see too many people bothering with this.
I remember An Post did something similar around ten years ago in my local area, they dropped in a flyer for a local business that sold parcel boxes, a neighbour bought one, worked fine for a year or two but then the lock broke and he hasn't bothered replacing it.
He uses parcel hotel instead.

Sorry, must have made it all up? Just been talking to the postman and he knew about the boxes but not about any security system that prevents a full box being opened a second time with the master key.:o

He did remember all the old post boxes being "bangered". In our area it was the end of the old green plastic An Post delivery boxes which he thinks was one of the best boxes available. One point to note is that all the ones damaged were in obvious locations at the end of drives and easily visible from the road the more hidden post boxes didn't get hit. Very few were ever replaced so the postman now calls to the door of a lot more houses.

Posters up in the delivery office for this - I suspect had what I was picking up been smaller there would have been a suggestion that it'd help.
