Well that's my marathon dream over.

Went for my first run since the half marathon on Sunday due to the pain in my knee which was diagnosed by my physio as Patellar Tendonitis. Didn't even manage 1 mile before the pain returned.

He has referred me for an MRI and has said we will reassess when I get the results but as of now I wouldn't be able to complete the full marathon.

    So frustrating :(
Commiserations. That's got to be terribly frustrating having got so close.

There is next year, but that looks a long way away from this vantage point.

Very sorry to hear that hupskip, it's just a sickener when it's so close. I will you well in getting over that and back to full fitness. No matter what you will have gained a lot from the training to date.

Sorry to hear that hupskip :(

Argh, Boards (much as I love it) is driving me flipping mad!!! Pages jumping about all over the shop. Saw your post about recovery miles DG, just can't find the flipping thing again to thank it!! So thank you!!

Have another question too. I got through the entire training in shoes that were too small without getting any black toenails. I switch to my new pair (same model, just a size bigger) and now the nail on the big toe of my right foot is getting progressively blacker. It also hurt to run this morning on it for the first couple of miles. I don't really fancy 26.2 miles of toe nail bed pain. HELP!! Why is this happening? Poor toe :(

The shoe problem is driving me crazy as well, bought a new pair of brooks gts 15s two weeks ago, never had a black toe nail in my life now I have 5 ..:confused: I'm a size 9 but i am seriously thinking of buying a cheap pair of 9.5 somewhere for the race....

Toulouse, has yours blistered? I have a remedy for that, it's not pretty and it is STRICTLY in an unofficial capacity that I offer it :D see the Jeff Galloway post below. Worked for me last year :)

Coolhandspan, Here are the lacing and toenail posts for both of ye, have a look, one of them should be useful :)

No, hasn't blistered. It's predominately on the right side of the nail down near the cuticle. I can feel it hurting now :(

Have the laces locked and will read all of those after I prepare myself. Ewwwww!

P.S. Damn it marathon training /shakes fist. Awake again at 5:15am and I'm not running until tonight!

Ok I have "running brain !!! "Bit like "baby brain ", when you're expecting forgetting words conversations and too tired to care !!! But I topped it last night! I got in soles from physio when training started to help Achilles issue. Decided to get new ones two weeks ago for DCM breaking them in on the shorter runs first. Haven't been very comfortable so got FBOT to look at them last night. I had the left one in the right shoe and the right one in the left shoe. How is that even possible ! No wonder they weren't comfortable. 5 miles easy (with incorrect in soles ) last night with 5*50 m strides. Everything sore after long run sunday and massage on Monday. Starting to get a niggle in my left knee after long run last week and this week. Was gone by weekend last week but will keep a close eye on it.

    Whoopsadaisyquestion #472

Fartleks right (I know it's a bit late to be asking this :D)

Mine say "20-40 seconds with easy jog recovery". Now i was always under the impression that meant that if I was flat out for 30 seconds I jogged for 30 seconds rec, but I was just told that it would usually be a longer recovery.

    What say ye?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,324 ✭✭✭chrislad

A guy who works with me was recommending those. From what he was saying, it seemed even (ie 1 mile at my 5k pace or higher, then 1 mile at say a slightly faster than easy pace).

Hey Whoops. I'm no expert, but when i've been doing them i've typically done 1 min hard followed by 4 min recovery. All out for 30 seconds out of every minute seems like you're not giving yourself enough time to recover between sprints.

What's the general consensus around speed work over the taper weeks? When training for other races, i've typically tapered by shortening the distance but upping the pace, to get the legs race ready. Is this a bad plan for DCM?

I stand to be corrected, but as far as I know the intensity/pace stays the same, while the number of reps/distance decreases.

fartlek means speed play. A 'real' fartlek session involves reps of varying lengths and intensities, made up on the spot. If there is a set rep duration there should be a set recovery duration.
Usually, 20-40 seconds effort means running very fast. If you're doing this in marathon training it is to improve your running form. If you are getting tired through the session your form will get worse, so you have to start each rep fresh. That means take a full recovery between each rep, jog for as long as it takes for your breathing to return to normal.

as dave says, through taper you can keep the intensity the same but reduce the number of reps. (don't be tempted to increase the intensity because you know you have fewer reps to get through)

But about 12 miles in, both of my feet were starting to feel uncomfortable, which was odd, because everything else was going good. I've been alternating two different pairs of shoes and trying to make a final decision on which pair to wear on the day, so yesterday I was wearing what I thought was my final choice. By 17 miles this was a real problem - I could feel pinching in one of my feet and discomfort was turning to pain. When I got home I took off the shoes and discovered that I'd put my orthotics into the wrong shoes. :o  I will not be making that mistake again. I can't believe it took me 12 miles to even notice that something wasn't right.

There's an argument amongst podiatrists that the nature of the soles don't really matter so long as they change you enough to run in a slightly different way and thus stress slightly different parts of the body. In other words for most people they can provide a good short term fix but over a longer period you're best off ditching them (that would be after the marathon of course!)

As Ray says - full recovery.

I know of someone who tapers during the last week by running increasingly short distances at higher paces but we're talking down to 400m or so towards the end. He's not aiming for any kind of fitness boost - more that he wants the leg turnover required for marathon pace to feel comfortable. It's an unusual thing for novices to need to address though so you're probably best off sticking to the plan and if you feel the need for some speed do some strides.

I can only imagine how you must be feeling at this late stage, I know it's easy for me to say, but getting yourself fit again is more important than any marathon. Mind yourself. Let us know when you're back running.

Two day migraine over but feeling rather wiped. 6 mile run on the schedule tonight. Safe to skip and rest and hope to be 100% tomorrow? Or go out but take it very easy?

    What would DG do?

    :P

See how you're feeling tonight and if you haven't got migraine symptoms head out and if after ten minutes you're starting to feel better keep going, if not turn back and do the 6 miles tomorrow.

8 miles done on a blustery night by the coast last night.

I've decided I'd like it to rain a good bit on the big day.
    Am I alone in this?
