They should be all sacked immediately, and their jobs offered back to them under the new terms for 1 week, and after 1 week, the jobs are offered to the wider public.

The days of needing unions are long gone, they were set up for the days of old when there was no proper employment law around. these days, they do nothing but hold the country to ransom because 'their" members don't want to take the same cut everyone else took.

Who would train the new people up to use the machinery? As with most jobs these days it is the people who maintain and run the machines who earn the most. They have them by the balls and they know it.

In cases like this they should have manual sorting in place? Yes overtime would need to be paid but I got a letter that was posted in Westport went through Athlone and was posted to me in Westport the next day.

    Excellent, hope you're right!

There're wrong. If it's in a post box it will be picked up but may not be sorted if there are any problems with the sorting machines.

Ah sh1te. When will the clowns get this sorted?

An Post are legally required to deliver post in it's system, if there are problems with any of the sorting machines then they will have to manually sort the letters. Parcels as far as I am aware are manually sorted.

People don't send letters like they used to but surely there's way more companies sending stuff through the post....
    Eircom,Vodafone,Three,Meteor and Irish water.
Also stuff like club points from Tesco Dunne Stores and SuperValue.
Also most people get there Motor Tax and insurance in the post not to mention the amount of penalty points being dished out.
That's only some of the stuff that's being posted that wouldn't have been posted years ago.

Dunnes Stores used a company called City Post (in Dublin) to deliver some of their vouchers last time, misdelivered a sh1t load I was told, and when people put them back in the postbox An Post took them out and DIDN'T redeliver as it wasn't their stamps on them, whoops, so if you didn't get your vouchers you now know why..

    Maybe because they work there?
It doesn't mean they'd know. National organisations are fragmented - particularly different departments to each other, and as said, post offices are often just agents for An Post and not employed by them.
The press statement from An Post was that the post office's retail functions are still continuing anyway.

if the machine guys strike then most of the countrys mail wont get sorted ,arrangements may be made for local mail posted for local deliveries to be delivered in house,ie,not sent to the mail centres but collected from post boxes and hand sorted like the old days by staff and distributed to relevant post-persons.. but most mail wont leave its particular county, registered mail and the likes should be ok as they are hand sorted anyway,ok so long as an post even continues with deliveries..no point if no mail to deliver.

    a postie.

Of course they are. But not within any specific timeframe. And there is talk of potential Protective Notice being issued to An Post workers.

Crap... I popped two packets into a post box this afternoon that were items I sold on adverts. Should I advise the buyers that it may be delayed??

Given that alot of people have made alternative arrangements the post should be considerably lighter and they have the weekend to sort any problems for letters posted today.

I am trying to find the article I read, that the issue of Protective Notice was going to be looked at after the weekend.

Ok, things like motor tax and insurance are not a major problem as this is all registered and easily provable. Think we should be doing away with discs anyway and just use registers.
Nothng urgent about bills or Supermarket points.

Biggest worry I can think of is for people who using Passport Express and need to travel soon.

there may not be enough staff to sort the mail, the old sorting benches are long gone too,its not as simple as your making out..an awful lot of variables ..

xmas is coming so there is no way an post wants this to continue, but its not an post striking it the guys contracted to operate the sorting machines,no machines ,mega mail backlog...hence the no post alerts

I never said that, I meant registered as in your tax payment is registered with the tax office and your insurance is valid and registered on the insurers systems.

As someone who runs a business that relies heavily on an post, let me just say that these entitled buggers should **** off to the private sector if they want more money. Public/semi state workers were the last to take a hit in the recession as everyone around them were losing their businesses and jobs as they kept their holidays, salaries and benefits. I've had many packages that got lost in the post costing me business and income and all they do is laugh in your face because they couldnt give a **** about anyone but their own little cosy club.
    rant over

Still an offence not to display them though. But it's all moot as common sense would prevail if fines were issued.

Are you for real? The strikers are private sectors. An Post are not striking. It's your beloved private sector that are striking. Learn the facts next time.

22% paycut, practically as good as being sacked imo.

That's fine but you accused public sector/semi state workers and make accusations about their pay and holidays when they are not striking. Vent your anger certainly but do so against the right parties i.e. private sector workers in this case.

God forbid your business every gets to the point of requiring some employees. Roster changes with a resulting potential wage reduction of 22%? Sounds like they have a case as they have been discussing this with their employer for almost 2 years without resolution. These are not big earners. Would you survive if your business was hit with total costs increasing by 22% with no option of recouping it in increased sales or prices?

Detached? You don't even know who is on strike FFS, or why, with your rant about the public sector.

    Your posts are a joke!

well thats unfortunate for them, but match that versus the multiplier effect this could have on the economy as a whole. If there is a two week all out strike from next Monday as is being mooted, then what kind of effect to you think it will have to the economy and businesses i.e to imports/exports etc?

    its ok everyone, panic over.
as well as dole cheques, the late late toy show application post will still be processed.

I just had to explain this to a non-Irish person. I don't think the English vocabulary had enough words to describe how utterly pathetic the countries priorities are.
