F.E.A.R 1 is still an amazing horror first person shooter. The gunplay is very well done and sound effects complement how satisfying it is. Holds up today and then some. The first one is still the only real one that's a must-play, though. You can probably find a cheap enough key for gog and steam around the net.

I wish I'd gotten the DRM free version but I think there was a huge F.E.A.R sale soon after I made a steam account.

There was a lot of random crap in Rage that looked atrocious up close.

It was really jarring because interactive objects had proper textures but they'd be standing right next to amorphous blobs like that phone.

Rage was a deeply flawed game, even from a technical standpoint.
If you stood still and admired the long draw distances it looked glorious.
    But that was it really.

Also, Smooth textures will always look better than rough textures.

    Like FFVII vs FFIX

Rage was miles better looking overall than F.E.A.R

Texture resolution was low in Rage probably due to last gen console restraints but overall the game area was much larger than F.E.A.R with entirely unique textures and much better art direction. Character models where miles better too. The texture pop in issues seems to have been resolved on modern hardware. Game wasn't too demanding to run at 60 FPS either.

I liked both games, combat in both was fun, but the driving in Rage was bland.

I played RAGE for about an hour before I uninstalled it. Rubbish game through and through. The gunplay was awful. I honeslty think F.E.A.R looks better than it simply because of it's dark, slick interiors and shadows. It's one of the few games where your character in first person actually casts shadows when standing in front of light sources. The physics are pretty good, too. Even graphic details like small lights left on computers made it a visually appealing experience in my opinion. RAGE was puke every which way I turned. If it wasn't technically bad in graphics it was uninspired waste of imagination with a severe case of brown-game. You can say it's graphically better in this and that way but in the end it was horrible to look at almost all the time meanwhile F.E.A.R was nice to look at and that's all that really matters in the end. I need to re-install F.E.A.R now...

Or if anyone wants to play F.E.A.R 3 hit me up. It's a crap game but a laugh for coop w/ mics. I know a mumble server we can use or we can settle for dank steam mics.

While I respect anyone's opinion of a game I don't know how you can state the gunplay was awful based on one hour of gameplay. At least 20 minutes of Rage's opening doesn't contain combat. Even if you played for one or two hours, you would hardly of got to use any of the weapons. Personally I found the weapons had the right feel to them, they had the right heft and the enemies erratic movements patterns coupled with a mixture of combined animations and rag doll physics when you killed them made the combat very satisfying.

While the shadow movement in F.E.A.R looks good, the shadows do look very hard, and while the game boasted some excellent effects at the time of release, overall Rage is technically a far more accomplished game.

Take a look at Dead End Thrills gallery for both games. Admittedly the author of the site does touch up the pictures. But I think you would have to be overwhelming biased to say F.E.A.R looks better.

Anyone thinking of signing up for the Humble Monthly Bundle?
    https://www.humblebundle.com/monthly

$12 a month. No idea on the number of games, but Legend of Grimrock 2 free if subscribe now. Thinking of subbing for the first month as I'd say that will be the month they use to lure people in. "Oh look at type/quality of games you get each month"

Without any idea of what kind of games and how many, eh, not a chance I think. Legend of Grimrock 2 isn't worth $12 to me (it looks like a good game but I'm in no rush to play it).

Was thinking along the same lines. I remember the earlier humble bundles as still being the best so this could be the one to go for if you are only going to subscribe for a month.

I imagine/hope they are going to try for something along the lines of xbox gold and you will get good enough games every few months. I just hope it's not filled with green light games or crap indie games in the other months.

Bought PC Format this week and read it's the last ever. Another PC magazine bites the dust. I would never suggest PC Format was the greatest PC magazine ever but I did like having a magazine that combined hardware and gaming in one. In recent years though the signs were there. The magazine itself became flimsy and most of the gaming reviews were direct copies from PC Gamer. So it's PC Gamer or nothing now (in terms of dedicated PC games reviews that is).

Disappointing alright but they are overpriced, I wanted to sub to pcgamer and e3 saw the prices for Ireland and that was it just too expensive

Linux Format is still around around. I used buy those two most month 10+ years ago. I was slightly surprised PC Format was the first to go but then Linux Format never really had much competition.

Only bought a couple of humble bundles... usualy for 1 quid, too. They lock most of the stuff I'm interested in behind pay-tiers now so I lost interest. Most of the time there's only one game in there that I want and the price for its tier is higher than other places if you know where to look.

That said, I really want LoGII because I'm absolutely loving the first one. But i'm stuck again ffs. Endless corridor puzzle... HOW?! I'll have to run the second game through wine if I do get it. Too bad they didn't keep up the Linux support. Runs like a charm (120fps max settings).

As for PCGAMER. Aren't they just another one of those 'journalist' sites that despise gamers?

The problem is, print magazines just aren't as popular as they once were. PCGamer is a good example of a long running magazine that successfully made the transition to online, I don't know when I last bought a magazine, but the website is one I'd visit fairly regularly.

I used to love PC Gamer when I was a teenager, but once I got broadband I don't think I ever bought it again. There's just far too much variety online for a print mag to make much sense these days.

You used buy it for the cover disc with the patches and game demos. Any decent game articles inside were a bonus. For a long time these magazines were the only feasible way to get your hands on patches or game demos and the only source on new upcoming game news. Web journalism was in its infancy and couldn't be relied upon.

Once video reviews/content became realistic for most people to watch the magazines started dying off quickly. But before that they were king.

By the time magazine comes out, info on it is out dated. No real point in paying for something that all is for free online and fresh as morning scones.

I did liked that Blizzard Magazine that was out a few years ago. Mainly about WoW. It had some cool articles there.

And lets be honest, those magazines and autotrader and Argos catalogue were best used sitting on throne, now we got Smartphones. :)

I started to buy PCGamer magazine a few months ago when i was abroad and had no internet access. And i've bought it since. I find when im on the internet i never have the attention span to read articles or watch videos since i get distracted online quite easily. With the magazine ill sit down and read through it. Odd i know but it works for me.
