    Hi there,

I encountered the same problem as you guys. Product didn't arrived in 48H as stated, wrote an email, no response, second email + few phone calls. Eventually the same fella, Liam, called back saying he will look in to it and ring in 30 min. Guess what, he didn't call back in 30, so more calls with no answer. Later he got back with an apology email and a text message saying that he does not have the tool in stock and would refund me. No refund yet, however this could take a few days. I just hope he was honest about making the refund.
However if the refund will not show up in the next few days I will report this to Consumer Protection and try to get the refund through the bank.
By the way, did anyone ever got a the product ordered? As I was going through the thread it didn't looked so.

    Bloody hell,

I was just about to pop an update up.

@louie_k - This is so similar to me.

After multiple attempts to contact them Liam emailed me yesterday morning.

He apologised but he had to refund my money (didn't say anything about it being out of stock!). He said that it would be repaid via my paypal acc. I emailed him back explaining my experiences (once again) stating that I thought that the company customer service was extremely poor and that I expected my money returned that day.

Well, no money has appeared in my paylpal acc yesterday or today.

From what I have read here I am not going to wait anymore. I am going to open a dispute via paypal so they can get the money returned.

Yes - I agree, I think that the consumer protection authority needs to be involved.

My situation has now deteriorated further with this company.

Its now in the hands of PayPal's resolution dept.

I won't update further until I have an outcome.

The issue is that they are taking payment for goods they don't have in stock. Most reputable on-line retailers only debit your card on dispatch. They are also really poortly organised and do not communicate when things are going wrong (which seems to happen a lot)

Actually most reputable companies debit you the second you click "confirm " as they use third party payment processors like RealEx - Unless they are gigantic like amazon I'd be very worried about debiting on dispatch as that would mean they are holding your card details.

As for John's diy - I reckon they operate like a drop ship seller. Very little in stock and they pass order to supplier for dispatch on most items.

    Update:

Ok folks - I will say this once and once only:

This company appears corrupt, for the love of god do not use them!!

    Ok, there, I've said it.

I understand that this is a bit of a damning statement so let me explain why I have come to this conclusion:
    • As you know they did not deliver my hedge cutter.
    • They would not answer most of my emails. They eventually told me that they could not deliver my item but would refund my money and give me a 'gift' for my troubles (I immediately now thought con job!!).
    • I emailed them back to inform them that I expected the amount to be transferred back into my paypal account without delay.
    • This didn't happen
    • I commenced a dispute via paypal's resolution service.
    • They sent me a credit note for an amount less than I paid for the hedge cutter. However this turned out to be a moot point as still no money was retuned to me.
    • I escalated my dispute to a claim. Johns DIY refused to engage with the process.
    • PayPal eventually ruled in my favour and returned my money in full after taking it from John's DIY account
    • Just some additional bits
    • They did not answer their telephones (I tried to contact them over 30 times) - no answer message, just a beep then it hangs up.
    • During this whole process they continued to advertise the same hedge cutter on their site, still citing a 48 hour delivery time. So couldn't they be arsed amending their site, or are they attempting to lure another egit like myself?
Look, IMHO they appear really dodgy. Use them at your peril.

Could this happen in any other country?
Perhaps we need a thread of recommended websites and ones to avoid. Our own Tripadviser on Boards. We know where JohnsDIY would be!

    Update

I wish I had read this earlier I got caught with this company as well. I ordered a Strimmer and paid for it but there it ends, no product no reply to phone calls and no reply to emails. I presume they are not still in business, but their website is still active and they are still taking peoples money. I am working with the card company to get a charge back but it is a long process, so as before PLEASE BEWARE IF YOU ARE THINKING OF BUYING FROM THIS COMPANY !!!!

Folks, if you're looking for an online Irish diy store, try handyhardware.ie
I found them slightly cheaper than Johnsdiy and thankfully/Luckily avoided this scam.
They usually do 10% discounts around bank holidays too. At least they did when I bought my hedgetrimmer in may and a drill in June.
However, I collected from the depot in Churchtown.

Do not us JohnsDIY site, the people that operate this site will rob you.

As mentioned on previous threads on this forum this site will happily take your money but do not ship you the product that they have confirmed as ordered and you have paid for.

I have been trying to contact them by both email and phone but they will not reply to mails or answer any calls.

I have read that the business is no longer operating and if this is the case they should have the decency to take down the site and not to accept orders. There needs to some legal safeguards to prevent scam companies from keeping online shops operational after they have gone out of business.

Again, just like to fore warn everyone. JohnsDIY site is a scam

Just had a cursory look to see if the site is still up.

It is and appears to allow items to go into the checkout for processing (including the item that I attempted to buy).

Has anyone reported this to the consumer agency?

As the overwhelming feedback on this thread appears to indicate that this firm is a scam - although I can't see their motive? as people just report them to paypal / credit card and get their money back.

    Unless they don't -

Is the scam that a percentage do not try and get their money? - I wouldn't have thought so.

or is it what nearly happened to me, that they said that they would repay only a percentage of the money and not the full amount, thus making small but regular cons?

or are they just inept? and can't do their job?

To be honest, I would lean towards the scam / con rather than ineptitude.

Anyway, getting back to my point, I have decided to report these fellows and was just wondering if anyone else was going down this direction. Weight in numbers and all that!

    Thank you boards.ie!

I got referred to Johns DIY from pricespy.ie for an American Fridge Freezer. By far the cheapest on the market. I have literally been hunting them down to try an give them my money but they have never got back to my repeated calls and emails/contact us submissions.

Just thought I'd consult boards.ie and thank god I did.

I guess I'll just have to order form the UK instead. Even with the crap exchange rate its still working out €250-300 cheaper inc delivery than Harvey Norman et al.
