Has anyone bought an item online from John's DIY (based in Tobberonan, Daingean, Offaly)and not receive it or be able to make contact with them. Over a week ago I bought an item online and the money has come out of my visa account. I have received no info about when I will get delivery of the item and despite numerous phone messages and email seeking info from them I've received no response - I've even tried to make contact through Facebook. I'm not confident about receiving what I've paid for and worry that the business doesn't exist at all. Can anyone enlighten me?

Nothing about their website looks like its not genuine. If you are not getting a response you could try the email address on their whois page http://www.whois.com/whois/johnsdiy.com

I notice they have not posted on facebook since the start of June.

If you have paid by Visa (even Visa debit) they you can raise a chargeback with your card issuer and they (after an giving the merchant a change to defend themselves) would refund your money.

Thank you for your suggestions. I will have a look at whoswho contact details. I rang my visa card supplier who told me that I can not get my money back as agreed to the transaction online and would have to go through the Court .

The website says it will take a week (5 working days) to arrive. If its bulky it can take an extra couple of days.

Q: When will my package arrive?

A: Most orders take 4-5 working days to reach our customers. Some bulky items such as heavy plant or equipment and furniture may take an extra 2 working days.

Its also properly registered as a company and trading name on the CRO website and the vat number is valid.

Its probably a small operation and the guy could have taken a couple of days off.

As for funds coming out of your visa card immediately - that's how online purchasing works. All done automatically via secure gateways - if funds are not taken immediately I'd be worried as it would mean the card details are downloaded by the online store and entered manually and a lot less secure that an automated system using a secure payment gateway.

Once the payment is taken, it them takes 2-3 days for it to get to the retailer and likewise, if a retailer does a refund, it is taken from the retailer immediately, but takes 2-3 days to come off your account.

Maybe everything is above board - I hope it is. By the way, I just ordered a hedge cutter so I'd imagine that would be a quick enough delivery. I'm so used to ordering stuff from Amazon and they contact me a number of times during the process. Thanks for all your research into this.

Not true. They might claim it is too early to start a dispute, but once a reasonable time has elapsed for non-deliver, then you can dispute the transaction.

    BiddiT,
Can I ask what the final outcome was with your order? Did you eventually receive your purchase from Johns DIY ? I placed an order with them 2 weeks ago and I'm getting nervous that they won't reply to my emails/phone calls to check when I might expect delivery. Thanks.

"When you call John's DIY you will get through to an actual person, no complicated menus or extended holding times. We want to talk to you, that's why you will find our phone number on every single page of our website. If our lines are busy just leave your name and number and we will call you back. Our number is (01) 9012002"

...taken directly from their site. They must be so busy that even though they 'want to talk to you' they just can't find the time.
TimTam, send them a mail telling them not to bother despatching the item as you are going down the Chargeback route. If they don't respond to that within 2 working days get on to your Credit card issuer and demand a chargeback.

Just an update for anyone purchasing products from Johns DIY... they are seemingly still operating and in business. I finally got a response to my calls and emails regarding my "lost" order...they say it should be delivered within the coming week. They were very apologetic.

    Hi Folks

My name is Liam Brennan and I work at John’s DIY. I've just come across this thread and I’d like to take a moment to address the concerns raised above.

We are indeed a proudly Irish business, we were formed almost 2 years ago and we have been trading on our website throughout 2014. Obviously with any start-up teething problems can occur.

We recently experienced an issue with our communications provider, which resulted in occasional calls and messages not getting through to us. We have since changed provider and are glad to say that this has solved the problem.
As an online retailer I can say that the biggest ongoing issue for is our country's (current) lack of postcodes. Any online retailer in Ireland will attest that delays over a few days tend to be because of couriers having difficulty making deliveries, so never be afraid to provide lots of address information when you order online.

I can be contacted by phone, email or via DM on boards if you have any questions, concerns or if I can help in any way.

    Kind Regards,

    Liam.

Get a quote from An Post for delivery - we use them for almost everything now and they are cheaper than most couriers and we've had zero address issues since we moved over to them.

They will collect, give tracking and even text / email customers if you wish too.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2 Johns DIY

    Thanks delahuntv,

We are now using An Post for a lot of our smaller deliveries and we find them very professional but unfortunately the majority of our orders are heavy and bulky which can be very expensive, we are always trying to provide the best value so we couldn't justify the high price charged by An Post.

    Hi Liam
Im currently trying to contact regarding an order too and I am having no luck. I ordered a product last week and have heard nothing since, it would be great if you could contact me. Thanks

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 15 theloniusplonk

    Hello GeorgieBoy2
I ordered an item two weeks before you and have received nothing yet. How did you get on after your post.
The lack of proper communication is very stressful to my wife and myself.
It would be very useful if the others on this thread gave their results.
I promise to let this thread know my final outcome.
    Thanks to all of you

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2 GeorgieBoy2

    Hi,
Yeah I eventually got in touch by phone a week after that during lunch hour, he told me my order had just landed that morn and he put it on a Saturday courier, to be honest I was sceptical enough but low and behold it arrived the day after. It was about 2.5 weeks after ordering it!
I think that he actually is a genuine guy but it's just that he is so difficult to get in contact with, he could do with showing on the website whether something is in stock or if you'll be waiting for it!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 15 theloniusplonk

Thank you for replying so promptly. You don't how much it has been a great relief to hear something positive.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4 Festwaukee

I ordered 2 things off them 2 weeks ago, I rang last week and got thru they said that one item wasn't in stock but they would send what they had. Still haven't got anything and they don't answer the phone now or reply to email's.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,261 ✭✭✭mgbgt1978

Is there nobody else selling the same stuff at the same price (or less) ?
Nothing but stories of delays, excuses and non-delivery from this company.....I know what website I won't even be looking at ;).

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 15 theloniusplonk

I promised to paste my outcome.
Owing to lack of communication I went through PayPal and got a refund. This was confirmed yesterday.
I think there was probably a genuine problem with the manufacturer supplying the product. Ireland is a small market after all. However, JohnsDIY has a superb website which makes firm promises and most of us like to give preference to Irish companies. The theme throughout this thread is really poor communication. A quick phone call and a chat would have relieved my stress and retained the order, especially after a two months wait.

This company is a disaster,no contact form Liam Brennan @JohnsDIY in a week, after calls and messages every day.
i am 1 €400 lawnmower down at this time, pissed off and about to call Garda on this bogus company.any info would be good.

theloniusplonk how did you get the refund thru paypal? did it take long? I'm feed up waiting for a response off these guys. they are posting stuff on facebook all week but dont reply to messages

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2 Beano2003

I'm in a similar situation, bought €500 worth of goods off this company, a couple of weeks ago, I wouldn't mind waiting a few weeks but they have delivery within 48 hours plastered all over their website. Called, emailed, sent message on facebook but no response. Has anybody received anything off these within the last couple of weeks?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 15 theloniusplonk

Sorry you are in a familiar difficulty. To retrieve my refund I simply logged on to my PayPal account (last Tuesday) then clicked for the Resolutin Centre and sent it in Dispute. PayPay then contacts the seller. I received confirmation yesterday that it was in their account and so Dispute terminated.
The steps re very well explained. A reason for choosing JohnsDIY was PayPal. I have never been in Dispute before but am even more favourably disposed to PayPal - and relieved. Mine too was an expensive lawnmower.
    Best of luck

Johns DIY got back to me a couple of weeks ago. They hadn't got my order in stock, so they refunded the full amount back to my bank account.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7 johntonyroche

Looks like this company has no interest in succeeding have been having the same difficulty as a few seem to be having no costumer service, gave me a story about how dpd lost the item said they would resend got a new tracking number last week rang dpd today and they told me there was no parcel sent just a order number so looks like there looking for a fall guy. going to refer my dispute to the ccpc let them sort it out. I don't see how it is so hard to reply to emails or answer the phone and not lie. Ordered 30 of March so that is a little longer than 48hrs

I am now having the same issue with this company. Sent emails rang and also face booked them it came up that they seen it. Yet couldn't be bothered replying to it.

Looks like these guys have gone out of business (but happy to debit your credit card!)

Whatever is going on make sure to steer clear of them. Plenty of reliable / reputable placces to order from

That's actually not possible as a credit card service is intrinsically linked to the registered business and impossible to delink it.

I've just ordered a hedge trimmer.

I was directed to John's from a cost comparison site & the site looked legit!!

I was told on the email 48hrs

    I will post my outcome.

However I am a tad thankful that I ordered via paypal

    Ok, quick update:

I received an email on friday stating that they had my order and would contact me with a tracking number.

As it had a 48 hr delivery I expected that the order will be processed on Monday (yesterday), so after reading some of the worrying comments posted here I thought I'd give them a quick bell.

Got through to a nice chap, but stated that he didn't deal with or know about the orders (I rang the only number advertised on the site). But he agreed to look into the matter for me and will get back to me in an hour, 2 max.

Phew I thought...... however, no call came, no email arrived.

I waited until the end of business. No reply!!

I have tried calling numerous times today. The phone just goes beep. No message, just a beep, then it hangs up.

I tried ringing the mobile number shown as a contact number on my paypal receipt but it just goes through to voicemail.

I wrote an email to their customer services today. No reply!!

I am starting to get worried. At best they have an extremely poor customer service. At worst, I am starting to wonder if this is a legitimate business at all.

I know under EU law I have a 7 day cooling off period. I think I will give them one more day and if I have heard nothing I will cancel my order and ask paypal to retrieve my money. I am even thinking of cancelling my order even if I do hear from them because if they are this bad when I am trying to buy something what would they be like if something went wrong or I need support.

    pants, pants & more pants

    Hi there,

I encountered the same problem as you guys. Product didn't arrived in 48H as stated, wrote an email, no response, second email + few phone calls. Eventually the same fella, Liam, called back saying he will look in to it and ring in 30 min. Guess what, he didn't call back in 30, so more calls with no answer. Later he got back with an apology email and a text message saying that he does not have the tool in stock and would refund me. No refund yet, however this could take a few days. I just hope he was honest about making the refund.
However if the refund will not show up in the next few days I will report this to Consumer Protection and try to get the refund through the bank.
By the way, did anyone ever got a the product ordered? As I was going through the thread it didn't looked so.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,452 ✭✭✭ads20101

    Bloody hell,

I was just about to pop an update up.

@louie_k - This is so similar to me.

After multiple attempts to contact them Liam emailed me yesterday morning.

He apologised but he had to refund my money (didn't say anything about it being out of stock!). He said that it would be repaid via my paypal acc. I emailed him back explaining my experiences (once again) stating that I thought that the company customer service was extremely poor and that I expected my money returned that day.

Well, no money has appeared in my paylpal acc yesterday or today.

From what I have read here I am not going to wait anymore. I am going to open a dispute via paypal so they can get the money returned.

Yes - I agree, I think that the consumer protection authority needs to be involved.

My situation has now deteriorated further with this company.

Its now in the hands of PayPal's resolution dept.

I won't update further until I have an outcome.

The issue is that they are taking payment for goods they don't have in stock. Most reputable on-line retailers only debit your card on dispatch. They are also really poortly organised and do not communicate when things are going wrong (which seems to happen a lot)

Actually most reputable companies debit you the second you click "confirm " as they use third party payment processors like RealEx - Unless they are gigantic like amazon I'd be very worried about debiting on dispatch as that would mean they are holding your card details.

As for John's diy - I reckon they operate like a drop ship seller. Very little in stock and they pass order to supplier for dispatch on most items.

    Update:

Ok folks - I will say this once and once only:

This company appears corrupt, for the love of god do not use them!!

    Ok, there, I've said it.

I understand that this is a bit of a damning statement so let me explain why I have come to this conclusion:
    • As you know they did not deliver my hedge cutter.
    • They would not answer most of my emails. They eventually told me that they could not deliver my item but would refund my money and give me a 'gift' for my troubles (I immediately now thought con job!!).
    • I emailed them back to inform them that I expected the amount to be transferred back into my paypal account without delay.
    • This didn't happen
    • I commenced a dispute via paypal's resolution service.
    • They sent me a credit note for an amount less than I paid for the hedge cutter. However this turned out to be a moot point as still no money was retuned to me.
    • I escalated my dispute to a claim. Johns DIY refused to engage with the process.
    • PayPal eventually ruled in my favour and returned my money in full after taking it from John's DIY account
    • Just some additional bits
    • They did not answer their telephones (I tried to contact them over 30 times) - no answer message, just a beep then it hangs up.
    • During this whole process they continued to advertise the same hedge cutter on their site, still citing a 48 hour delivery time. So couldn't they be arsed amending their site, or are they attempting to lure another egit like myself?
Look, IMHO they appear really dodgy. Use them at your peril.

Could this happen in any other country?
Perhaps we need a thread of recommended websites and ones to avoid. Our own Tripadviser on Boards. We know where JohnsDIY would be!

    Update

I wish I had read this earlier I got caught with this company as well. I ordered a Strimmer and paid for it but there it ends, no product no reply to phone calls and no reply to emails. I presume they are not still in business, but their website is still active and they are still taking peoples money. I am working with the card company to get a charge back but it is a long process, so as before PLEASE BEWARE IF YOU ARE THINKING OF BUYING FROM THIS COMPANY !!!!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,855 ✭✭✭✭machiavellianme

Folks, if you're looking for an online Irish diy store, try handyhardware.ie
I found them slightly cheaper than Johnsdiy and thankfully/Luckily avoided this scam.
They usually do 10% discounts around bank holidays too. At least they did when I bought my hedgetrimmer in may and a drill in June.
However, I collected from the depot in Churchtown.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 85 ✭✭TheCeltictiger

Do not us JohnsDIY site, the people that operate this site will rob you.

As mentioned on previous threads on this forum this site will happily take your money but do not ship you the product that they have confirmed as ordered and you have paid for.

I have been trying to contact them by both email and phone but they will not reply to mails or answer any calls.

I have read that the business is no longer operating and if this is the case they should have the decency to take down the site and not to accept orders. There needs to some legal safeguards to prevent scam companies from keeping online shops operational after they have gone out of business.

Again, just like to fore warn everyone. JohnsDIY site is a scam

Just had a cursory look to see if the site is still up.

It is and appears to allow items to go into the checkout for processing (including the item that I attempted to buy).

Has anyone reported this to the consumer agency?

As the overwhelming feedback on this thread appears to indicate that this firm is a scam - although I can't see their motive? as people just report them to paypal / credit card and get their money back.

    Unless they don't -

Is the scam that a percentage do not try and get their money? - I wouldn't have thought so.

or is it what nearly happened to me, that they said that they would repay only a percentage of the money and not the full amount, thus making small but regular cons?

or are they just inept? and can't do their job?

To be honest, I would lean towards the scam / con rather than ineptitude.

Anyway, getting back to my point, I have decided to report these fellows and was just wondering if anyone else was going down this direction. Weight in numbers and all that!

    Thank you boards.ie!

I got referred to Johns DIY from pricespy.ie for an American Fridge Freezer. By far the cheapest on the market. I have literally been hunting them down to try an give them my money but they have never got back to my repeated calls and emails/contact us submissions.

Just thought I'd consult boards.ie and thank god I did.

I guess I'll just have to order form the UK instead. Even with the crap exchange rate its still working out €250-300 cheaper inc delivery than Harvey Norman et al.
