V40 Engine Warning Light

I have a 2015 V40 D4. The engine warning light just came on. Any ideas? I searched quickly and forums are saying EGR might be the problem? Is it safe to drive? What can I check under the bonnet?

You need to read the code or get a garage to read it. Could be anything

If you only do small stop start mileage it could likely be the dpf clogged up, although if it's 2015 then unlikely.

Why don't you bring it back to garage you bought it and get them to sort if it's a new car?

An engine warning light could mean anything really so it's impossible for anyone here to know what it might be. As it's a 2015 car it's still covered under Volvo warranty so contact the dealer and get them to diagnose the problem.

Most likely the EGR valve is at fault. It's a common enough problem on the new Volvo Drive-E engine.

Get it booked in under warranty.

Not a great start for a brand new car.....

There could be a redundant vag engineer or two who might have an idea of how to keep that light off.

I wouldn't be driving it till you get the error message, Google how to get it without using a ODB reader and the correct software. I know someone who drove on an engine warning light for a few km and destroyed the engine. Hopefully it is something simple but it might not be and I doubt warranty will cover the damage if you drive after a warning light without getting the OK from a main dealer.

Warranty will sort it for you but does not bode well long term. Are you doing short journeys?

It's a very common teething issue on what is a brand new engine.

There is no need to be alarmed, as it is happening to several cars and in most circumstances there is an established procedure for fixing it.

Have you read the manual that comes with the car? There is a section where it tells you what the lights on the dash mean. I have a V40 too and it's fine.

Useful info here regarding this issue.

It would be interesting to know what the software update involves if there is one.

Volvo's versions of newer high efficiency petrol and diesel engines.

Below is a link as to the requirements for carrying out diagnostic communications on new Volvo's.

Years? Great, any chance the great company called Volvo getting around to fixing it? Surely they don't run out the old "sure they all do that sir" excuse, Or do they?

last 2 years, mate has a 141 s80 d4 and volvo ended up giving him a new engine because of egr faults and a dpf failure. The engine meanwhile is in a box en-route to sweden

That's terrible stuff is the new engine any better? Certainly makes a strong argument for petrol. Imagine what all that messing would have cost him without the warranty it would wipe the out the diesel savings in a flash.

That was a bit of an odd case, car has its new engine and turbos last 2 weeks and no faults, but they are meant to have sorted this issue in newer models.
The v40 above may have a completely different fault but most likely being new and all its egr/dpf related, its not just volvo its across the board tbh.
As for what youre saying about the argument for petrol well these engines are proving to be very efficient and better engineered than any volvo petrol of late, its the emissions laws that have really put manufacturers up sh1t creek

That's where the problem lies, this so called efficiency of Diesel engines may well be true but in many cases this efficiency is rarely achieved because the car isn't doing the proper diesel type driving. I think it's time for a major rethink on the whole co2 based tax system for starters. People see the €200 a year tax and 45 mpg driving to the shops but the whole thing goes to pot as the soot and carbon builds up.

    yip

Doesent matter how you drive a diesel anymore its not built to run efficiently for years to come when you have said systems in them that dont last, fuel quality is another problem here. We are seeing big differences in fuel quality between suppliers. In fact the best quality diesel nowadays is probably agri-diesel because theres less risk of suppliers putting additive in that (but your volvo WONT run on that because of the dye).
Not to be naming and shaming but people who use Topaz alot are complaining of bad milage, Getting good reports from Applegreen users though.
