Hi folks, I've been unwell the last few weeks and even quieter than usual on the posting. After a visits to the doc and tests my fears have been confirmed I have glandular fever. I've been advised to stop marathon training.

I wish ye all the best of luck with the rest of the DCM journey. I'm devastated I won't be there with ye!

Skittles. So sorry to hear your news. That must feel like a huge loss at this stage. Look after yourself and hope that you can start to search for some other goal, in course.

Hi all, was holding off registering all along as I was waiting for that inevitable injury that was going to hold me back. This hasn't happened (says he as he touches wood......ahem!)
    Anyways, I see there's a few add-ons;
    - Photo Package, €30
    - Engraved Medal, €6
    - Video, €5

Anyone feel any of these are worth it? Wouldn't mind a photo or 2 but €30 is a bit steep, it doesn't say how many you get for this, just "all photos we identify of you".

Thanks guys appreciate the posts. It's a huge blow. Sounds completely ridiculous but I feel like I'm grieving along with being unwell. Everyone keeps saying to me there'll be plenty other marathons but I really wanted to do Dublin this year. Ah well will have to suck it up and move on !!

That's rough at this late stage but the training will no doubt stand to you. You'll be stronger for the next training cycle. Chin up.

There may be other marathons but this is the one you've been training for and imagining over and over. There's a huge amount of mental effort and commitment we put into this notwithstanding all the training. Grieving for me sums it up, really wish you all the best

Yahoo, a week and finally back up-to-date.

Smash I'm so sorry to hear about your friend, how is he doing now?

Great to see you on Sat and to meet more novices.

    Hi Aquinn,
Yes, it was great to see you on a day when I was able to walk under my own power . Congrats on your HM time too.....very fast, you are obviously training very hard to achieve that kind of PB!

My friend is fine now, he is still out of work sick as he is still a bit tired and weak following the incident, hopefully back in work on Monday and is talking about getting back running in a few weeks time when he is 100% recovered....the story ends well thank God.

Last 2-3 weeks of training madness left, gonna aim for a slow 30K this weekend to build endurance and stamina, followed by 32K/20 Miler x 2 the following two weekends, the last of which will be a trial run for the DCM, after that and then decide on target times....no point in over thinking it until these 3 runs are done!!

Then I can 'graduate' properly with the 2015 Novices, as I got a D- last year and need to repeat the test :D

    Hi Skittles8710,
Really sorry to heard that you have to pull out. If it is any consolation, I did the DCM last year feeling really unwell after a flu (gob****e) and had a really tough day out, it all went ok right until the National Anthem was over and then it went quickly downhill, and the whole 'First Marathon' experience was ruined for me!

You are totally doing the right thing by pulling out as your health is more important than anything. You will no doubt bounce back and get back running soon and maybe target something new in a few months time.

Best of luck and mind yourself. You will do the DCM another time ;)
    Smash

so sorry to hear that Skittles, completely understandable to feel like that, you've put so much time and effort, both physical & mental, for the last few months. I hope you recover soon and can get back to training for your next goal.

That's a dose Skittles. Sorry to hear that. It's probably not much comfort but your fitness base up to now should stand to you for the next one as soon as you've recovered.

Skittles - please be careful even when you do make a comeback, glandular fever is one of those things that lingers like a bad smell even once you've started to feel better. Look after yourself now as well as you can though.

Sorry to hear that Skittles. As others have said, look after your health first and make sure you make a full recovery, your training thus far will stand to you for sure!

Yes, I think that's what scares me most is that there's no way to know when it's completely out of your system. I thought I was recovered last week did my 19miler Saturday and then boom it hit me like a wall again and had to go back to the doc.

Thanks all of ye for the nice words. It's means a lot coming from fellow runners - friends and family can't understand why I'm upset to not be able to do the marathon. They think I should be relieved to sit on my arse for the foreseeable future! :)

Anyway enough about me let's hear some positive stories from people's runs this evening! ;)

Ah skittles, so sorry to hear this. Three months and one week... :( Your health is the main thing, despite all our talk of the 26th being the main thing, because without our health we can't do much. So get well soon and take care of yourself. Take all the time you need, and then some. It will be worth it further down the line.

You have a really great 'can do' attitude and that will stand to you. I hope this hasn't affected your exams too much? But again, exams don't go anywhere, do they?! They'll be there when you're back in full health.

And so will the marathon. DCM ain't goin anywhere and in 2016 it'll be one of these lunatics here mentoring you :pac: So see you then and if you can, say hello in the meantime now and then. There will be a Graduates Thread in November, definitely pop in to that too.

As others have said, you've done the work and when you're ready, your body will remember...once it's fully recovered ;)

So take care and I wish you the very best....

You've been entered in the Athlone 3/4. Tickets are in the glove compartment of your car. You'll be running with the 3h pacers.

    Enjoy.
