Diesel emissions scam - implications for motor tax?

What are the implications for motor tax vehicles that are in low bands if their emissions are found to be dodgy and are in fact much higher?

Will the tax increase? Could there be back taxes?

Nox emissions aren't related to motor tax in Ireland.

it's the end consumer that was lied to, so i'd say it would be the manufacturer footing and fines etc. but this is Ireland after all...

i'd imagine nothing will change for existing owners.

Where they not doing it to reduce co2 emissions too maybe not. It should be upto the manufacturers to sort so I doubt tax will be touched either way.

NOx emissions are controlled on the basis of a maximum limit at the time of registration. It's not a tax band issue and I'm not sure if type approval can be revoked for registered cars.

New cars is a whole other story, the supposed fixes involve a reduction in power and increase in consumption / CO2. Like for like 161 cars could cost more to VRT and Tax.

The days of diesels are numbered..well at least as cheap tax goes.
The poisonous effects of diesel emissions have been the subject of eu debate for a few years, Paris is talking of banning them by 2020, and certain European citiesonly allow diesels in that have a sticker saying that they confirm to Euro 4/5.

(I'm still tempted to get a 6 pot diesel)
