The marathon starts at 9 alright, but the clock goes back that weekend, so if you're going to get all OCD then start at 10 (plus a few minutes depending on your wave!).

Just did my 4 mile there. Felt fairly okay. Glutes still a bit tender, but manage it at PMP+60 for the most part so happy enough. Physio on Thursday so I'll get her to give me a good thrashing!

Folks I would be interested too but the earlier the better to make the rest of the day work. No pressure as I can link in with wherever ye are during the morning.

Just home from the sports therapist. Initial impressions are very good. She recommended epsom salt for the bath.... Is this any use or just placebo??? Sorry if this came up before but keen to use any trick available as we hit the high LSRs... P

I can try and make it work too, the earlier the start, the better.

Epsom Salts are magnesium. Magnesium is great for muscles.

I swear by Epsom salt baths and have had them after my long runs this last few weeks. My legs are so fresh straight after them despite them seizing up when I initially stop running.

I got a massive big tub for a tenner. Would do seven marathons!

I would definitely be up for the LSR on Saturday. How about 9.30 as a happy medium? :-)

Good stuff, I am happy to do whatever suits most people really so haven't set my heart on a time so if a few were good to go early then I could go with that. Tis for the company for the run and a few more pairs of eyes for the route!

Okay Nop, Denis, Toulouse (your mate?), oirishfruitie...is 9:30 too late for ye?
Also pace wise, what kinda pace are we all doing the LSRs at?
    Any other potential takers?

For a route I was thinking of starting in the park and running on from around the 6mile marker onwards. I would like to get in the drags out around Crumlin and that.

I'll double check with her tomorrow but I think she's around 9:30 to 10min/mi

Apparently marathon running is addictive so you are all set! Thanks for the advice.... Seems that pet shops are the cheapest... Free goldfish with every box of epsom salts!

Does it have to be immediately after the run?

Good thinking Diego. We just need to work out how to get from finish back to start. We can all meet in town (Merrion Square?) and then drive to the Castleknock Gate in one car, run for a ridiculous amount of time back to Merrion Square?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,199 ✭✭✭denis b

I have run this route once before http://www.mapmyrun.com/routes/view/865961991, Could avail of free parking in the PP. It covers most of the "interesting" features of the race route. Just a thought. The circular route means that we can eliminate any extra driving and particularly so if we need to arrange different running groups etc.

Am good for 9:45 to 10 min/mile and can adjust.

I think maybe meeting in the park itself might be handiest and then share taxis back up at the end if that suits. The free parking covers the cost of the taxi trip really.
But your idea works fine for me as well nop, depends on what is easiest for people! I am staying at a mate's place in Killester on Friday night so will be driving into town.

You lot are faaaar too busy here :D
    Hello all and Dubgal,

I've been following the forum for a few weeks now, albeit from a distance.

I've been following the boards plan, although not exactly to the book.

One issue I seem to have is cramping after my long run. I've done a couple of 30kms LSRs and hope to do one more a bit longer (34/35). I do find the last 5 kms tough. But what's even worse is once I stop. Calves cramp up.

All ok after about 15-20 mins.

I'm not drinking enough on the long run I know that - which would be part of the problem, right?

Is there anything else I can do to help me reduce the cramping at the end?

Thanks everyone. Been great to follow the threads.

    Oirishfruitie
Hi oirishfruitie, I agree with clearlier. I read a very convincing article a while ago but unfortunately didn't save it which suggested that muscle and ligament weaknesses can be a fault too, especially when fatigued. Do you find it is worse after a long run when you stay sedentary or keep mobile? Do you stretch post run?

For Leanne: I've already discussed my choice of underwear with her but I do find the selection of running underwear for ladies to be sadly lacking. Anyone got any suggestions?
A high banded thong works for me. Has to be in soft lace - no elastic cuffs - though. If you can't find a non-chafing pair, wear nothing. Most shorts have an insert anyway.

Didn't think I'd get out for a run before dark this evening so started off the week with 13.5km done in 1 hour this morning on a treadmill (I think that's an average pace of 7:07 a mile) - should be able to get the rest of my runs done in Phoenix park this week.
TOO FAST :D:D:D Top up the endurance at this stage, not the speed ;)
    Clearlier wrote: »
If you google causes of cramp OF you'll find as many 'solutions' as results from your search. Nobody really knows what causes it and the likelihood is that different people have different causes. Watching your form and making sure that your long runs are slow enough would be the two suggestions that I would start off with but it's all speculative as to what causes cramps.

Read an article recently which suggests placebo however there is overwhelming anecdotal evidence that supports the benefit of epsom salts and walking in the sea. I'm on the anecdotal side of the fence fwiw :)

And to follow on, don't have a very hot bath straight after a run. From what I understand, a hot bath and possibly inflamed muscle tissue after a lsr is not a good combination.... Have a comfortably warm bath later in the night. With a whiskey...or wine...

Can't see that map for some reason, guess it's protected somehow!

Okay so maybe we suss out what we have as a group....myself and you seem to be the same pace for this.
FeenaM...nop...what pace would you like to run at?

I have ran the last 6 miles of the course separately but would like a go at the nice hill there at 20-21 miles with a good few miles in my legs.

I am planning to do the last 5-8 miles of the course on Thursday night with a mate all going well as well, have to take advantage as this is my last trip to Dublin before DCM.

Ok, I have this week's post all written up and ready to type but you're gonna have to wait till the morning, have to follow my own advice, don't I?!

    Night night zzzzzzzzzz

Edit: EASY MILES FOR EVERYONE THIS WEEK, half or no half....Boards plan, you guys have a 20m this weekend so that's reason enough for easy miles this week. This 20 miles is a significant part of the plan at this stage so you want to be sure you're going into it well-prepared whether or not you have done the half at the weekend...Don't worry, we'll get our money's worth out of you, it'll be followed by an 18 miler the week after ;)

...and HHN1, you're on a step back week, enjoy :)

You can chalk her down as a maybe. Just got a panicked phone call from her, she's hurt. Off to the PT with her tonight hopefully but will have to wait to see what they say before she commits to anything at the weekend.

8.13 miles done into work this morning and got wolf-whistled at on the N4, that's a first!!

Legs were tired for the first 3 miles but picked up. In the later stages it was my shoulders that were tired but nothing major.

4 miles tomorrow and then a break before the weekend LSR. Wonder what kind of shape I'll be in this time 5 weeks.
