Malicious or not, intentional or not, it was a bad foul that turned dangerous for Shaw (and it really was since he got a broken leg). It should be an automatic red.Agreed, I've heard people say it wasn't malicious, and that he got the ball with his other foot but that doesn't wash with me. Horrible tackle.
Rolland Courbis, a French coach that gets a lot of media airplay (he's good for a pun) generally tells a little story of his own about these situation. "If you take your gun and shoot someone but miss him, what the judge gonna say? Nah it's OK, he missed him, he's free to go". I don't think so.

I suppose but he was visibly distraught after making the tackle, no malice at all, although you're probably right that if its dangerous enough to break his leg then it's dangerous enough for a red card0 -

The more I look at it the worse it gets. Should have been a red. Shaw was unlucky getting tangled, but it should have been a red.0 -
