It's been discussed on here a bit already, and I would think the consensus would be whatever suits individually. Personally, if I took two gels every hour I would have severe stomach cramps or frequent bathroom breaks along the way. One at each 10-15km is my plan, so probably 3-4 altogether.

Hi guys, how many gels should I be consuming per hour? Up to 18 miles now and waiting til mile 10 before I take one, but I'm thinking I should be taking one or two per hour? Cheers

I did 16m last Sunday, took a gel at 40, 80, 120 mins. Got some good advice on gels here last week.

    Tuesday: 7 miles easy
Wednesday: 8x400m with 90 second recovery jog (include 1 mile warm up and 1 cool down)

Did this in my cheap asics from last year as my (Apr '15) NBs seem to be wearing down and my bigtoe is giving pain as if theres an ingrown toenail prob (when there isnt). Asics were fine...

That's great JacEim, well sort of :) Can you ring and ask if it would be ok to do some pool running? If you get a quick enough cadence and maintain the proper form (will post link), it's a great way to keep ticking over

She wants me to swim... Which I stink at - but will try. She asked me to avoid cross training as well, so I think pool running might be out also.

BTW - I have had a vascular (varicose vein) issue in this leg for a couple of years now and she thinks my leg is retaining too much fluid and could be a contributory factor in a steady stream of niggles in this leg. Starting tonight with elevating my side of the mattress with the intention of draining the leg at night (I'm getting old!!!)

I should point out that the advice given in that post refers to the marathon day itself.
For training purposes, if you are already happy with your choice of gel, I'd argue that you would be better off not taking any gels at all at this stage. You really need to get your body used to burning fat as well as carbs/sugar/glycogen on your long runs. Gels just encourage your body to burn sugar.
For this reason Gels are not something I would personally be taking with me on training runs, I'd prefer to leave them to the big day where a) I will be running faster than on my long training runs (burning more sugar/glycogen) b) running further and c) will need any boost possible (psychological or physical).

If you are still 'experimenting' by all means try a gel on a long training run to try out. But if you are already happy with your choice I'd say take one for emergency but try not to use it.

As a matter of interest, would you take them for the half on Saturday ?

Personally I don't take them during half marathons although I know some people do. I'd argue it is more appropriate to take one in a race situation over an easy paced training run.

I wouldn't agree with this method in this situation. Phoole is a novice so needs to practice what race day conditions, the old saying of never try anything in a race that you haven't in training comes to mind, it might be fine not to practice taking gels in training for an experienced runner who knows their body can handle the digestion of them on race day but a novice will not have that insight and the race isn't a place to find out what happens.

The marginal gains of going gelless in training could well cost a lot more in the race and the risk/reward isn't there. The body is a funny thing come 20 miles in and without testing on those long runs, you'll never find out how it works under those strains on raceday. If I was in the same position, I'd have my gameplan set out at what times I will take gels in the race and practice taking them at those times in training just to gain a better understanding of how the body reacts to them.

My splits improve after taking them but whether that is psychological or physiological I couldn't say. I've only taken one gel under race conditions so I'm going to take a couple during the HM.

It's overkill I know but I need all the practice I can get.

I'm already dodging sick people. Loads of the feckers came down with sore throats and colds at the Picnic so how I got away with that one I'll never know!

I never get sick, what's the betting I'll get sick right before DCM.

I did point out that he/she should continue to practise if not certain which gel works well and only to cut back if already sure (and practised).

To be honest I'd not be comfortable with anyone feeling they 'need' to consume x amounts of gels in order to complete an easy paced long run (experienced or novice), however I agree that going without probably only gives marginal gains at this stage. It's not a hugely important thing.

Had my sports massage this evening. It wasn't pleasant but felt good after.

She did a lot of work on my left calf as that's where all my niggles are based. I can feel the soleus now after. She was a bit worried about how tight and tender my soles were so I've to keep an eye on them and go back to the Physio if they don't improve. Also did some work on my Glutes which are very tight. Did a load of weighted squats last night though so that was probably to be expected. :D

So all in all it was good and I've lots of advice to put into practice. Hopefully will feel the benefits in the days to come.

My fat ass just broke my trusty Grid Roller!

From the manufacturer.... "We're confident it won't break down or fail under normal use"

Guess that's just confirmation that I've gone past what's considered "normal"!!
    I suspected as much.

Right Novices, time to nail your colours to the mast....or something like that :)
Fill in your (boards user) name and number here so we know who to cheer for. Yeah, we're gonna use your user name to cheer so expect to be given a wide berth by other runners :D

Singer, you get to go first because I think I remember your number. Usual: quote, fill in and remove 'quote' tags, post. First to break the table gets no flapjacks....

We'll (myself, whoops and TFGR, anyone else?) be along the finishing straight for cheerleading. Suggestions for after?

The actually HHN1 plan has an 18m on this weekend which has been substituted with the half for the purpose of incorporating the Race Series. With warm-up cool down, etc. you are likely to be doing 15m+ this weekend with 13.1m at higher intensity so wouldn't worry too much about the 3 miles or so dropped.

Thanks for the replys much appreciated guys.

If any of you peeps know of a race number going spare could you let me know thanks.

I am afraid to mess with the table for fear of missing out on a flapjack could someone add me please no:6564...cheers.

I'm going to make a sign of some sort so y'all can find me the flapjacks after the race.

I'll let you know what it is when I think of something clever that's more than just 'flapjacks here'. :pac:
