been doing a little bunny shooting lately and i have been using some cci standard i had in the house but i have hit at least 3 bunnies in the last week that have ran off. the distances were between 60-80 yards.

so looking for a round that will drop them where there hit

i used to use lapua, found them very accurate, but hard to get,i use winchester now,i find they hit a bit harder, head or chest shots seem to drop them, but they still can kick their way down the burrow,

    Hi,

I'd agree with Sniperman on the Winchesters, Winchester SuperX High Velocity rounds out to a 100 yards (or slightly further, if you are certain of your shot).

    Thanks,

    G.

CCI Subs hollow point works better than CCI Standard in my experience.

My 22lr loves CCI mini mags hollow point but the rabbits hate them. I almost took the shoulder off a Fox one evening when I hit him in the chest quatered on to me at 50 yards. But the main thing is bullet placement as seen when a little 14gr pellet from a low power air rifle can kill rabbits outright at ranges up to and including 60-70 yards.

In saying the above the most devestating 22lr round i came across was Remington yellow jacket Hyper Velocity. My last CZ loved them but unfortunately my 10/22 doesn't like them much

Main reason they run off is 'cos your not hitting them in a kill zone.
I always used target ammo as that is what I had to hand.
And even with a proper shot placement they will still leap about a lot.

Is there much difference in accuracy between a cci standard and a mini mag?

Also what distance do you zero your .22 at? Currently have mine set at 50 but thinking I should zero at about 70?

i zero at 50 yards, then i know my hold overs at 70-80-90 yards, works well for me,i only use subs,i find them more accurate, and alot quieter, also every rifle is different, what could be(ammo) a tack driver in one rifle, may not group under 2" inches another, you need to try all the brands to see what works best in your gun, then stick to them, and have fun

Use a bullet with a hollow point designed that's designed for hunting. Keep the "target" ammo for targets. Subsonic either Winchester or Eley. High velocity you won't get better than CCI Velocitor.

I use CCI Subs in my .22lr as my gun just prefers them. I find that if a rabbit runs after I hit it, it's most likely my aim and not the bullet, I have dropped rabbits at 70 yards with correct placement but had rabbits run at 50 yards with a bad shot.

As a lad said to me one day, most of the time it's the nut behind the bolt that's the problem!!!!

Fire a few solid points at an old phone book and the use a few low velocity hollow points and dig out the bullets and you will see some difference.
The solids may flatten and deform but the hollow points will mushroom of break up, thus dumping more energy and causing bigger wound channels.

I hunted with high velocity for many, many years in a semi and found them excellent anchors for rabbits, but now I use sub hollow points with a moderated rifle.

Eley would be my preference but I use Winchester as and alternative and Lapua when neither is available.

Good head or chest shots will anchor a bunny but as the lads have said a shot to the noodle can scramble the brains and send the dead rabbit flip flopping around to the extent that it may be lost down a borrow or such.
