Doing a bit of research on an interview I have lined up next week folks, it's with FMI, quite a reputable company by all accounts, selling Electric Ireland D2D. Can't find anything in this thread about them (only read first couple and last few pages tbh), can any one enlighten me?
    Thanks in advance!

Edit to add: Only joined boards.ie tonight to enable me to ask this question, apologies if this isn't acceptable protocol.

Thanks for the reply IJ, albeit not the news I wanted to hear. They advertise basic of 21k plus commision, I assume now that I'll need to reach a target before earning the 'basic'? Have you worked for them yourself?

So you're fecked if you only get 8 sales a week? Not the most secure sounding of jobs.
8 sales would be 160 euro starting off they like to see agents get 20+ a week but they don't put pressure on you. The guy who was over me always tried to help the best he could as in if there were any questions I didn't know or just general advice over the phone. As a company in general they give you every opportunity too succeed.
I just struggled knocking on doors knowing a lot of people didn't want me bothering them.
But that's just me, I would not of changed the experience for anything. My advice is try it go too the training day it might just be for you. One thing I can tell you is if you do well you can and will progress from agent to team leader and ever further unlike a lot of companies who promise the world but you never see any progress.
Give it a go what have you got to lose.

The only two companies you should be considering if you are wanting to do residential door to door sales is with Energia and with SSE Airtricity. For Energia you ring NK Communications in Dublin and for SSE Airtricity there are several choices, but the only agency with a good reputation is called BillSave also based in Dublin. You can work all over the country though as they have hubs.

    What do you mean?

Everyone that's been there that I ever met was always paid, they are honest in their adverts also. When you call them they tell you straight its door to door, they hide nothing trying to trick people into training courses.

I know literally nearly 90 people who have been through their doors or still work there, and none of them had any proper complaints. Sure some found the going tough, because they were not cut out for sales, but there is only so much you can train someone.

In all the years I've worked in this industry there is one element that always stands true. When agents leave a company to move to another agency in a similar role for what they believe are better things, with better pay and all manner of promises under the sun. They leave, and its not very long, usually just when they get their first pay into the bank, that they realise they made a bad call and they end up asking if they can go back and work there again. The amount of staff who have returned to BillSave after trying something else is testament to their honest approach and integrity when dealing with people.

In all honesty, out of all of the direct sales agencies in Ireland, they are right up at the top. Read through this entire thread and you will struggle to find people bad mouthing them or the way they were treated by them, compare that to all of the others who are nothing but false promises and horror stories.

For what its worth irishjig69b, looking through the last couple of pages it would appear you have worked for a lot of different sales agencies. You have complained strongly about all of them. In my experience in direct selling for over 15 years now, I would conclude that although some of those agencies are certainly not much cop, the common denominator is yourself. Ive never yet met a good reliable sales person who jumps ship and has worked for lots of different agencies, but I can guarantee you that all of the worst sales people I have ever met, those that like to complain a lot and never accept the reason for poor sales lies solely with themselves and their poor attitude and, or lack of ability, have been around all of them and failed hard at them all. I could be wrong as I do not know you, but I'm fairly certain. Good sales guys don't need to jump ship, the companies they work for bend over backwards to accommodate them and because they are making wads of cash each week they have no time to sit complaining, theyre too bust buying the finer things in life and treating themselves and their families.

Time for a reality check and perhaps an acceptance that sales isn't for you. It doesn't make you a failure, sales are hard for the wrong type of people.

Yes. Depending on whatever campaign you are on will determine if you are PAYE or not. Energia, Airtricity, Electric Ireland, Panda Power, Bord Gais, Eir, Vodafone etc all have offered roles as PAYE, many like Energia even provide a company car.

Eir is the new name for Eircom in case you didnt know.

If NK Communications are to be believed, their current jobs include a basic with commission and a company car.

Obviously, you would still have targets to meet but at least it would be more comfortable.

You should believe it because its true. NKC are the direct sales agency for Energia.

Anyone have any information on nk communications? Is it commission only?

They have several different positions and products available. Most of the stuff they do is a full time employed role, typically providing a company car.

I have been doing work for them for several years.

    Hi.

Can somebody please explain how these companies exist when they don't even pay
    minimum wage to their "employees"?
Are they operating in some kind of loophole?

What companies are not paying minimum wage? I do not see any doing that. If you're self employed on commission only there is no minimum wage.

So the staff are "self employed" on commission based sales jobs?
Are people then working on ad hoc basis without an actual contract?
Also who's responsible for taxes from the income earned form commissions?

I'm just interested in legality of this as I was offered an interview for something similar very long time ago but skipped it because it looked like a scam. This was back in 2010 when these companies were just starting out I believe.

    Thank you.

If youre employed by them on a basic wage you will always get the minimum wage. Most of the sales jobs Ive seen are higher than minimum wage, often with extras like a company car and mobile phone, possibly even a tablet device used for sales. You typically get commission on top of that, but its normally only after a set amount of sales, which basically is what is covering your basic pay.

If you're self employed on a commission only job then of course the individual is responsible for paying tax and social contributions etc.

The method of payment is generally your choice, but not always. Whether or not its deemed as a scam would be up to whatever company you are working for. As this thread proves, some are a complete joke and will have you working all the hours and hardly any pay, others will be very rewarding and lucrative.

As for staff on commission only being genuinely self employed is a bit of a grey area. If you delve into what constitutes being self employed or employed there are several factors which will determine your employment status. In reality, Ive rarely seen a "commission only" job which treats you as self employed, actually being properly self employed. Normally they impose all manner of rules and restrictions which would never be permitted for someone truly self employed. If youre self employed you should be able to work whenever you want, hire someone to do the work for you, not have set times to be at offices etc, but try and tell that to one of these agencies who try and fine you if youre late for the morning sales meeting.....
