the MLR for this week is 14 miles with 10 @ HMP  I was hoping the cold would feel better today but has now progressed to a cough, so I think it's wise to take today off and try the MLR tomorrow. I feel like such a wimp and it's annoying that I can't seem to keep the momentum going from week to week.

You're the furthest from a whimp I could think of Anna. You're sensible, very sensible, when you're sick you need to rest, no matter how ****ty it makes us feel to hot hit a running target so you did good and you knocked out 22 miles on a week where you're sick. Most people would be so proud of doing 22 miles in a week so chin up :)
    annapr wrote: »
Then my infinitely more rational OH gave me some good advice: first, if you're sick you shouldn't be running, but you need to move on and forget about runs you've missed. You will miss some days of the plan, maybe even some weeks of it. That doesn't mean you don't do it, you just adjust your targets, maybe do it slower on the day, but try to enjoy it. Keep going with the plan and make a call closer to the time.

I realised I have been letting myself get oppressed by not hitting the plan targets, thinking about it in a very binary way -- all or nothing. But I still have some good training done. The decision point for me will be if I don't think I can do better than last year! But I think there's still time to get a few good weeks of training done. So we'll see.

Very sensible other half and +1 to whats been said already. In the grand scheme of your training this year, this is a small blip in the plan.

I missed one run this week out of pure laziness and felt so angry with myself for not hitting a target. One thing I've learned from this marathon training is that running to plans is tough because there's guilt associated with missing one and it sometimes takes the fun out of running.

I went completely off plan after that and ran the distance I wanted at a pace I wanted and I smiled all the way around. It's completely not the right thing to do but it brought me back around to enjoying running again. Keep in your mind why you enjoy running, what it does for your body and mind and how happy it makes you. Get back out there and enjoy this week and try not to let the guilt eat you up if you miss a run :)

Hope you're feeling better today Anna ?

No question about it you are on course to take a chunk off last year's time. You've been running PBs for all the race series and your mileage is way up by comparison.

The training miles - and back to school germs  - are going to play havoc with your immune system so do what you can to boost it (probiotics, vitamins/minerals, water and extra sleep).

P.S. Wooden Bridge and back is 5.5 miles! It's exactly 4 miles from Westwood to the wall and back.

Anna, you've had a great training cycle. Some weeks better than others but you are so much stronger than last year. You definitely shouldn't be training when unwell, that does no one any favours so you were right to go easy and yet you still managed mileage that is most of my weeks. Less of the beating yourself up and get back to it.

Just remember the bigger picture looks like you have been really consistent. Your recent races have shown some real improvements. Only a few more weeks now, and you will reap the rewards of all your hard work. :D

+1 ... I think unless the virus lasts for a month you would expect to do better than last year ;)

hah, yes, true, that is a pretty low bar alright :D

Yeah, that's exactly it... and why it's really valuable to have someone else to give perspective and help you snap out of it! :)

And thanks everyone for the comments and support, glad to see the whole entire internet agrees with D :D

Thanks everyone for the good wishes for the HM, but it wasn't to be today.

    Tuesday 15th : 10 miles easy

Supposed to include strides but had no energy in my legs for them. So easy to St Anne's, a loop of the park and back in the seafront. Considered cutting if short to about 6 miles, but knew I wouldn't get another chance for the 10 miler this week so stuck with it.

Once again, exhausted at the end.

Wednesday 16th : cross training. Hiked the Spinc trail in Glendalough with my American visitor who was very impressed.

Beautiful day, beautiful place, climbing the 600 steps has to be good training I reckon. Felt GREAT after this, not really tired. Hoping this means I'm on the mend.

    Thursday 17th: rest

Friday 18th : planned to do 3-4 miles ahead of the HM, went to get changed in the afternoon and fell into a deep sleep for an hour instead. This was not a good sign.

Saturday 19th: Dublin Half Marathon -- DNF

This was my first ever DNF, and it really should have been a DNS. Before the race, I had several goals in mind: A would have been sub 1:55, B a PB, C sub 2 hrs. I knew I wasn't feeling great all week and thought maybe I should do this at PMP or even easy pace... but then I thought no, take it a Km at a time and try to hit target pace of 5:20/km.

Woke up this morning with a splitting headache. I considered not starting but told myself I would feel so much better if I did the HM, I love this race. So off we went, the usual d3 crew, aquinn in the driving seat this time. Did a bit of a warmup, wished the others well for their PB attempts and lined up a bit behind the 1:50 pacers.

Felt ok for the first couple of Km, 5:18 each, bang on. Going down the Khyber was very crowded, then on the way back up towards Chesterfield I was shocked to feel my energy draining and struggling to keep the pace. Third Km was 5:37.

Told myself that the first few K are always the toughest, keep going to the water station. Took a bottle of water to sip, maybe that would help. Going up the path towards the Castleknock gate, I realised that in other races I would be trying to pass people here and finding it narrow. Today, I was the person blocking the path.

Turned back onto Chesterfield, slowing by the step and had a discussion with myself about my options: push on and try to hold some pace, slow down and do this as a training run, or stop. Tried to hold the pace but couldn't, decided rest would be more benefit than finishing it slowly, so bowed out after 5.3 miles (and helping myself to a lucozade sport at the drinks station as the race turned towards farmleigh). As soon as I stopped running, I knew it was the right decision, my legs were like jelly and my head wasn't much better.

Did the walk of shame back down Chesterfield to the bag drop (cheering people along the way), where I caused havoc by requesting my bag before they had them all sorted, there were about 10 little scouts running around looking for it!

Headed to the finish line then where I thoroughly enjoyed cheering people in... FBOT sauntering in at 1:28 ish, followed by D getting a great PB (that plan really worked :)), Bungy smiling as she broke 1:40 with ease, Aquinn not far behind also smiling with delight (those plans really worked too :)). Nice to hear reports of PB's also from Chickey, Mrs Mc and others afterwards. And to see Dubgal in great shape for tomorrow.

LauraAc said to me afterwards that it must have felt sh1tty dropping out, but it didn't at all, which just reinforces that it was the only thing to do. Think I need a few days to shake off the cough and congestion and get some energy back.

So I will chalk that down to experience, I think the only bad decision I made today was starting in the first place. I still love the HM event, the park looked lovely, the weather was perfect for it today and I enjoyed the morning despite everything.

When I was spectating close to the finish line, I saw the medics rushing out towards an ambulance not far from the finish. Very sad to hear later that a young runner died. Awful news, my heart goes out to his family.

Well done Anna, it took ballz of steel to do the right thing by pulling the plug on the HM today and not pushing yourself back another week :) High five :)

So very sad to hear of the passing of that young runner, it really puts everything in perspective - PBs are great but starting and finishing is what really counts

Thanks Neady, yes you're right about putting things in perspective, we can all take ourselves too seriously and then you hear news like that and realise how lucky we are!

Defo did the right thing anna and you know that yourself anyways. Don't be in a rush back. Take it very easy for a few days.
    Hope you feel 100% soon.

Sorry to hear about your race on Saturday, Anna. You did the right thing though, amongst other things it was getting warmer and there were hills in the final miles which could have exacerbated your issues.

Hope you are feeling better and can get back to full fitness soon.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,119 ✭✭✭Mrs Mc

You did the right thing to bow out Anna. Get better soon and build yourself back up again. Good to see you and the D3 gang afterwards.
