I'm currently an irish broadband user near claregalway. For the last while the download speeds have been very flaky with speeds of 0.33 Mbps in the evenings Max speed is between 2-3 Mbps).

I'm looking at switching to fixed line and was wondering is there any difference in performance between these. Eric is 45 euro per month compared with vodafone at 38.

In the eircom store they checked my line which I used to have connected (no longer do) and it showed 12 Mbps but when I spoke to vodafone the guy in the shop lives near where I am and said I would only get 5 Mbps.

Should they be the same or does eircom throttle vodafone or something?

There will be no difference, the speed will depend on the length of your phone line, ie your distance from the exchange. Take anything a sales rep tells you with a pinch of salt, they have no idea especially if you do not have an active line. Test your closest neighbours to estimate speed

I wouldn't have believed the rep only I seen it on the screen myself. The only thing I'm thinking was that was just showing the capability of the line @ 12 Mbps not what the speed would be??

I'd go into it expecting 5mb and if you get more then happy days. It should be a good improvement on what you have.

Any recommendations of vodafone over eircom, other than go with the cheapest?

Do your homework and make sure its not an introductory offer for 6months after which the price goes up

Also look at the contract length sometimes can be quite lengthy

I am with vodafone at the mo with unlimited for €38 for broadband only no phone service just the fibre no big issues with voda at present other than the broadband router is pretty much locked down preventing any sip trunking or vpn
