Recommend an Irish Whiskey as a retirement gift

My Father in law is retiring at the end of the year.
We'd like to give him a gift and are thinking of a quality aged whiskey.

- He's American but is fond of all things 'irish', so something of Erin as opposed to a scotch.
- He's not a connoisseur, an occasional/special occasion drinker.
- Budget is €150-ish.

Teeling 21 year old or Redbreast 21. Both fantastic whiskeys.

Maybe even Green Spot's Château Leoville.

Can't fault any of the suggestions above. Personally I'd go for the Redbreast 21. Middleton Very Rare is an option as well as it does come in a nice presentation box.

Find it to be a bit mediocre myself. Plenty of better value whiskeys at that price point.

Oh I agree with you. Personally I'd stump up the extra €38 and get a bottle of Redbreast 21 yr old but the Middleton VR in it's box is a lovely gift item. I got a bottle for my father in law the first time I met him and over seven years later he still talks about it (the bottle is long gone though).

Seeing that he's an occasional tippler I'd swing for Midleton, smoother than the Red Breast and he won't grit his teeth as he's smiling on the first sip, the presentation box is pretty sweet too

For something a little different (assuming you live in Ireland), you could go to the Midleton or Bow Street Distillery and fill your own cask strength black barrel Jameson. It's very good, and you get to put some kind of message or name on the label.
